I have love/hate relationship with this place, though mostly hate. I've ended up here enough through proximity to figure out what I like from their menu (very little without significant special ordering), and have gotten used to the service issues. First, service: the service problems have nothing to do with the people who work there; the staff is consistently friendly and helpful (though like the rest of LA, no one seems to stick around). The problems are endemic to the system. The menu is only visible from where you place your order, and there isn't room to stand and look at it outside of the ordering line. If you order a drink, you're expected to wait for it by the register and know its yours when they set it out. If you order food, you get a number and they'll bring it to your table. If you order both, you still have to wait at the counter. These wouldn't be problems if the place wasn't so busy all the time, which is probably why they have never been noticed or fixed. The menu is terrible in its lack of variety. While they serve a variety of food in a way, its all meat and cheese with bread, plus eggs at breakfast. While they're used to special orders, the menu has no indication that there are options. There are no apparent vegetarian items. Regulars seem to ignore the menu most of the time. The food itself is OK, at best. Eggs tend towards being overcooked. The chili is neither flavorful or spicy. There are a few things I like though. The hot chocolate is amazing. The to-go lunch salads are huge and a good deal. I like being able to get a vegi scramble, even if it is a mess of special ordering. I love their special vegi burger. (I'm not a vegetarian, I just appreciate dietary variety). Their saving grace is location. I would have never tolerated them long enough in town if they weren't tone of he only things on campus. read more

This place is almost always busy for breakfast and lunch. You need to come during the non-peak times to beat the crowd. You can even call in your order as well. They have an arrange of coffee drinks to choose from and you can dine in or carry out. During the summer they open up the patio for more sitting room. They don't have much options for pastries but what they provide are very yummy. I especially like the almond croissant and their giant cookies. Prices are average for Los Alamos area so don't be surprised to pay $5 or more for a breakfast burrito. With Hot Rocks being across the street from work is very convenient for me if I forget to have breakfast or lunch, however they are not open for dinner. read more

I used to eat here all the time. I really liked the breakfast and the cheese steak. The homemade cookies were awesome too. They employ a lot of students which is awesome. I have been in several years so I don't know if anything has changed. It's not the most amazing restaurant in the world but it's consistent. read more

I went here with a couple of colleagues to try my first New Mexican breakfast burrito and I wasn't disappointed! My colleague ordered us the carnivore breakfast burrito Christmas style and saying it was HUGE may be the biggest understatement of the year. That thing could have lasted me all day. It was full of bacon, sausage, ham, eggs, potatoes, and probably some other good stuff. The chile (red and green) was good, but definitely had a kick to it. The coffee is good, the food is pretty good, and they're moderately priced for Los Alamos. What's their gimmick? They're pretty much on the LANL campus, so it's within easy walking distance of most of the lab people. This place is packed around lunch (11-1), pretty busy during breakfast (8-9?), and almost dead the rest of the time. Plan ahead! read more

Hot Rocks is close to LANL, and has a pretty good breakfast burrito, and good coffee. The burritos here are a lot better than Chile Works (more egg and meat, and potatoes that are cooked correctly). They burritos are large, made to order, and have a good egg/cheese/meat/potato ratio. I recommend the Green Chile over the Red Chile here. I would give it 3.5 stars if that was an option. read more

What no one is saying is this restaurant is on National Laboratory property. Regular folks can't get in.

This is one of two places to eat on the Los Alamos campus. It has its high points and low points. Today the special was Carne Adovada burritos with rice and beans. The Pork was a bit bland, even with the red sauce. They must have slow cooked the pork without the chilis. It was ok, but not much better. I have had their salads and quiche before and both would have been better choices. read more

Average prices, portions are a bit small, tastes alright. The steak grande plate is probably the only thing worth getting.

Hands down, their breakfast burrito is the best in town. My personal fav is the green chili with bacon. Perfect amount of salty and spice.

Another update for Hot Rocks! I've been quite pleased lately. They seem to have improved their attitude, efficiency and customer service, so I'm coming back to update to 5 stars. They certainly are better than Otowi at the moment. read more

I ordered the Valle Grande burrito plate with chicken and green chile. Things I was supposed to get, but which I did not receive: tomatoes, green chile, cheese, lettuce, sour cream. Basically it was eight bucks for a dried out tortilla shell with a handful of raw onions and the driest chicken breast I've ever encountered. I choked down half of the plate and had to discard the rest. A terrible ripoff and disappointment. read more

Best sausage green breakfast burrito....EVER!!!! I could eat one every day. Service is always prompt. Love the food here!

Decent breakfast burritos, but your clothes will reek after spending 10 minutes here. I don't think I'll go back for that reason alone.

I had the gyro special today (and I eat there quite often). The gyro was good, but it was way to small (like a soft taco) and didn't meet my expectations from what I get with their Valle Grande burrito for about the same cost. They need to amp up the proportions on the gyro to match its $8 price tag. read more

I like the breakfast burritos, but have to comment on today. Very busy this Friday, but the red chili was awful. Should not have been served. It was like red dishwater, in terms of flavor and texture. I am a regular, and the red is usually good to excellent. Something went very wrong today! read more
