it's been a year since i went and the service and vibes are still the same - the meat and veggies etc are self serve again, everything is so pricey now though it's 5.85 for a basic meat plate, 7ish for other meats, and 4-6 for veggies they also charge $3 per soup base so it was $6 for half and half rip, it used to be included and then changed to $1 per, so $3 per is hefty rice is still self serve and included, pretty normal rice - the meats are always marinated well here but i think the prices are rough my total was $19 for 2 plates of meat and the soup after tax and standard tip - could get a way better portion of food and meat for that cost at like literally any other hot pot place but i guess i go bc their marinade is good lolol read more

Hot Pot City is our go to place when we want hot pot but don't want to wait in a long line. It really is an underrated place for hot pot! There's 3 different broths to choose from: regular, spicy, and Thai, and we usually get a split pot of Thai and spicy for an additional price. They also have a grill surrounding the pot, so the pot is slightly small. There is a fridge in the back to get all your items: vegetables, meat, seafood, sides, butter, noodles, and sauces. There's also rice in the back that you can get yourselves. I really love the ribeye here. I feel like the plates are tiny, but the marination is delish! We also always get the salmon, fish balls, and vegetables. The restaurant isn't the cleanest, especially because there's the grill there. I definitely feel a bit dirty after leaving. So, this place is a hot pot and kbbq place. A la carte. They charge you by small plates that you pull at the back of the store, and whether their counting system is accurate or not is another story. It felt so complicated, and the stove top to cook meats was so small and sectioned off, its not like normal kbbq places either. The pot for shabu was too deep, and honestly not big enough. For 3 people, it was a struggle to cook meats and shabu at the same time. If im kbbqing, I want to cook a large amount of meat for everyone to eat. It was so hard to adjust cooking for yourself individually. The idea was interesting, but execution isn't as grand. First and foremost: Not AYCE, all dishes are charged a la cart based on whether it's a side, veggie, or meat dish. With that knowledge ahead of time, based on reviews and the cool concept of a hot pot and a grill on the same stove, I was very excited to try this place out. Even took my mother here to try it with me. We left after dinner with the same impression: Worth trying once, but we're probably not repeating. Pros: - The hotpot/grill concept was fun! Nothing like being able to dip or grill up a delicious piece of meat at your whim! Grilled mushrooms too! - The prepped fridge concept made my inner bbq/hot pot chef absolutely delighted. I wish I can have a fridge full of prepped meats and veggies like that at home to just start grabbing from! - Wide selection of veggies. - Freshness and cleanliness of the veggies and meats. - Service was friendly from the family that owns and runs the restaurant. Cons: - Meat selection sub par compared to other bbq places in the area. - Sauce station seems disorganized and messy with a lot of bottles. A conventional scoop bin format with sauce dishes or pre-packed containers might help. - Price. The biggest issue here honestly. We ended up paying $80 each for dinner and 2 teas. My mother does not eat too much either; if I brought one of the 'bros', we would run the bill up much higher. - Part of that price issue was that they charged for the noodles! I wanted to try the 4 different types of noodles and ended up paying for each. - With top notch Ayce places less than 10 minutes away at $30-$35, I can't justify coming back here knowing that on a hungry day, I can rack up more than a $50 bill myself. If you want more control over your hotpot/bbq ingredients and maybe want to do both at once, and you have a smaller appetite, Hot Pot City is definitely worth a try. I LOVE hot pot, and I also make my own hot pot at home, so I am ver picky. Hot Pot City made me want more of it. The service was good, plenty of food selections, and they offer many choices of sauce. Service: The lady was very friendly, we were the first customer and arrived 5 minutes before 12 and she sat us right away. (Shame on me for not asking her name) They provided two tongs and explained that was for grilling/raw food. I like that so, no cross-contaminations. A separate bowl was also provided for the hot pot soup.(I usually have to ask if the rice is served). I love how they thought of everything. It's exactly how I would have done it at home. Food: The Marinate rib-eye is full of flavors. It's a bit too much for my sister but I loved it. It is on the thin side but that's perfect for me. I like the serving size too. It allows me to order more variety of food and can still finish it all. I wasn't sure about the soup base from the way it looked but it was very tasty to me and I keep drinking more and more. The shrimp from the seafood combo is also. Seasoned for grilling. It was nice and fresh. I also like the food is plated and on display. It allows me to see how fresh and the amount be served. Sauce area: They don't have the satay sauce that I am used to but the chili oil with seeds and ponzu sauce does the trick. It actually allows me to taste the meat flavor, not over powering. They have a nice selections of hot sauce. Having both soy sauce and ponzu is a nice touch. Cleanness: Everywhere I looked was clean. I noticed when she gave us our utensil, she replaced a soup spoon on her own ,maybe she noticed something but it shows she cared about not giving out anything she wouldn't use. I will definitely return and recommended to more friends. I hope you will also like the food here. Tips: Be sure to know which dish is seasoned for grilling and which is for hot pot, otherwise, your soup might be salty. I did grilled the bok choy with some butter too. I only used the Chilli oil with seeds and ponzu. It has the spicyness but not over powering like Sriracha, and ponzu gives a little vinegary taste and light soy sauce flavor. I have a new found love for this place! After not having been here for a few years, one of our friends suggested it for Friday night dinner! I had almost forgotten about it. Happily they're still open!Honestly, after the pandemic, I missed being able to grab your own food from buffets, etc. Some still have you order and the server brings it out (you can do that here too if you prefer-they have a sheet where you can mark all items you want). But I prefer picking out the items myself. The concept of this restaurant is self serve shabu/hot pot and bbq grill. There is a row of fridges in the back of the restaurant where you go and grab your veggies/meats/noodles/sauces, etc. I do like being able to pick out my own plates (you know because in my head it means I'll find the best one). If you want to grab several items all at once, there is a cart that you can also use. I just grab two items at a time and take it back to the table (repeat). There's such a good variety here for me. It lets you get your hot pot fix and kbbq fix all at once. We opted to get a split pot because we wanted two different soup bases. I'm a fan of their Thai broth. My friend opted to get the original broth and then adds in his own sauces to flavor the pot. In the back of the restaurant, you'll find the rice pot. It's self serve and unlimited! Back there are also all the sauces, utensils, bowls. My go to's here are the canh chua veggies, ong choy and galbi. Those 3 items at one place? Now you can see why I like this place. Im notorious for ordering several dishes anywhere I go because I always want a little of everything. Well this place gives me that. Sure, it can add up depending on what you grab. Let's start with the good stuff first. There is a variety of meats here. 1. There are lots various meats from beef, venison, pork, fish balls, and imitation crab meat. 2. Veggies ranging from american broccoli, napa cabbage, mushrooms, spinach, eggplant, baby corn and other different greens to choose from. 3. Noodles: Ramen, egg noodles and rice noodles. 4. Unlimited rice (get it yourself) 5. Soup base: Regular, spicy, and Thai style. (I recommend the Thai style soup) 6. Grill your own meat The not so good stuff. 1. Pay to cook your own meat. 2. Pay to get your own meat from the fridge - 4 pieces of short rib (roughly 1.5 strips of short rib) $4.25. - 4-5 pieces of thinly sliced ribeye steak $4.25, - chicken thigh meat (roughly 2 chicken thighs) $4.25 3. Pay to get your own veggies from the fridge. - I think the each veggie plate is about $3.25-$3.50 4. Price per Plate system. Meaning, certain size plates are a certain price. However, plates that are stacked up on the already small tables just take up room. 5. Service was just meh. 6. Floors were pretty slippery. So, in short, pay to do 90% of your own things. I mean, I cook my own meat at KBBQ, but at least they bring me the meat and veggies. If you're a big eater like I am, there is hardly any room to put the empty plates. Plus, since each plate is a particular price, food adds up super quick. 5 plates of short rib come out to about $21-22 for about 6 short rib strips. Add in your, veggies, noodles and $1 extra for spicy soup and $2 extra for Thai soup, then you're in for a surprise in the bill. Maybe a system should be devised in order to place the plates so they're out of the way when eating. The flavor weren't bad at all. I've been coming here for years and feel that this restaurant is underrated. We've consistently walk in hungry and waddle out satisfied. The atmosphere is lively prior to Covid where you can walk up to the fridge and grab your own meat, veggies, seafood, sauces, rice, noodles, etc. Now, due to Covid, you get piece of paper to mark your selection as you would at other hot pot places. This fortunately doesn't take away from the experience or effects my decision to continue to visit. Restaurant is clean, the set up is similar to kbbq places with huge vents hanging from the ceiling. There's a giant horizontal fish tank at the front, which is cool to look at while I wait for my food. Service is quick and attentive, owners have always been super sweet and nice. Servers are also very sweet, never had a reason to complain when I visit. Food has been consistently fresh and nicely presented by the sweet folks in the back. I remember prior to Covid, I would take a plate out and a sweet lady with gloves would count and add a new plate in, I saw her and said hello, she would sweetly say hello back. They're always on top of replenishing the plates, even now, after eating, I would walk up and the plates are nicely organized in the fridge. The quality has somewhat gone down. The plate of canh chua is now just a plate of bean sprouts and the season soup base has gone down also. I had to ask for an extra season base to make the soup taste somewhat decent. the short ribs are cut very small for what it cost. The bowls and spoons smell and taste like dish soap which ruins the meal In my opinion. The booths and seats are very sticky and has lots of oil splats and drips everywhere. My hair and pants were sticking the the chair. The service is confusing because I'm not sure if I need to get my own drink, rice and sauce since I do pick out my food items. However when I saw a serving of one thinly sliced beef was $5 I assumed it would be a good portion but that was not necessarily the case. The prices are a little high. For 2 people who shared one pot & got around 7-9 plates, it's was $70. It sounds like a lot but the places were small. The quality was better than okay. Had many sauces for the side to dip which was nice. The service was okay but they seemed understaffed because it took them ~10 mins for them to seat us even though it was probably around 30% capacity at the time we got there. We additionally noticed they were not collecting places off of the table once there was no more food on them so they piled and it was difficult to eat around. The ambiance was okay but the seating is arranged so that parties can be seated together or they can place dividers and have multiple different parties seated. The problem was that while both my friend and I were sitting our hands almost touched the person next to each of us respectively which would have been very awkward.
