After a long day of driving my wife found Hot Point Chinese Restaurant on Yelp and based on the reviews we tried it. My family of five enjoyed their soups, their appetizers and the entrees. We eat very good Chinese food on a nearly weekly basis. My kids (19, 15, 10) stated that if this restaurant was local to us it would be our new favorite. The meats and vegetables were all fresh and tasty. Always a great sign. Exceptional service and attention to the customer by each member of their staff, my family felt welcomed, nourished and relaxed. After so many mediocre experiences over a 16 day, nearly 5 thousand mile road trip these folks really hit a home run with our family. If you find yourself anywhere near The Dalles do yourself a favor and enjoy their great food and hospitality. Food portions were great (and leftovers travelled home and were promptly consumed). The food was disappointing. Hot and sour soup was inedible. The spring rolls were bad, nothing like a true spring roll. Sweet and sour prawns were more breading than prawn. The Mongolian beef was the only edible dish. I will not go back. I don't recommend. read more

We had planned on going camping up at Maryhill State Park and the closer we got the worse the air quality got. We drove by an active fire and both our throats started to burn a bit and our eyes were also stinging. We finally arrived at the state park and we checked the AQI (Air Quality Index) and the reading was 134. FYI, an AQI above 100 is quite unhealthy. So we decided to head home but while on the way up we decided to see what the restaurant situation was like and Yelpers had given Hot Point some really good reviews and I'd been craving house lo mein for a while now so I decided to scratch that itch. It's a very unassuming location but once you open the door, you are rewarded with an amazing aroma suggesting you are in for a delightful meal. I love 1/2 and 1/2 egg flower and hot & sour soup and I was very much impressed and thought to myself that we were in for a very astounding meal. We ordered the house lo mein, snow pea beef add broccoli, honey walnut shrimp, and curry chicken. We hadn't really witnessed any dishes coming out so we were unsure of the portions. Holy cow, the food came out filling up each plate and almost overflowing. Usually when they serve huge portions, the flavor is lacking. That was not the case at all. My lo mein was fantastic, great shew from the noodles and all the veggies were cooked to perfection and quite flavorful. My gf damn near at the honey walnut shrimp prison style by wrapping her free arm around the plate guarding it because it was that rudely delicious. The sauce borders on what I would imagine crack to be like as you kept stabbing your fork to eat more of this amazing dish. I love snow peas and with the beef sauce and the broccoli intermixed, each forkful was such a treat. The curry chicken noodles had enormous depth to this dish. We left with leftovers enough for two additional meals. Please treat yourselves to this gem. Sadly now we have to compare this to our local Chinese restaurants knowing Hot Point demolishes anything we have locally. I apologize for not getting more photos as we were both really tired and irritated from all the smoke. read more

Service was very good. Nice hostess, cook came out and checked on us. Was expecting a lot given reviews. Potstickers were okay, nothing special. A "B"Hot and sour soup was good, an "A minus"The eggdrop soup was bland and very odd because it was loaded with corn and peas, and given with soda crackers if wanted, something I've never seen with Chinese soup. Not good, a "D". We ordered the honey walnut shrimp, but did not expect the shrimp and broccoli covered with a sweet white honey sauce. The shrimp were fresh, and strangely worked with the sauce. It was a "B". Last, Szechuan beef was ordered medium hot, was very mild, had to ask for chili flake sauce to try to heat it up. Decent amount of beef, but huge amount of onions and peppers that overwhelmed. I graded it a "B". Also, they give you only a fork in a napkin. I had to ask for a knife to cut the huge fried shrimp in half. Place is clean, prices very reasonable. Again, staff super nice. Food was mediocre. read more

So, wanted Sushi in The Dalles, but the restaurant was closed, for good, even though their website shows they're open. Found this restaurant on Yelp, always use this app. Reviews looked great. Parking lot was full, and when we walked in the restaurant was 80 percent filled. The smells of food was inviting. We ordered the #3 combination; crab puffs, shrimp, fried rice, Kung Pao chicken and sweet & sour pork. All the food was hot, looked great, smelled great, and tasted great ! Service was outstanding, including the owner who was working the floor. Large portions, we ordered one meal and split, taking some home. We will definitely return when we visit The Dalles again. read more

Lol...alright I simply loved this place...Hot Point! I was just finishing up my journey along wonderful 74 mile Columbia River Gorge Drive. Here I was in the small town called The Dalles. It was the end of the day and I was just looking for a simple and quiet/casual Chinese Restaurant. Well...Hot Point absolutely delivered...perfect for being a cozy/quaint little hidden and tucked away Chinese Food eatery. I am so glad I came here! From the outside appearance in the parking lot...I was a little hesitant about what Hot Point would look like on the inside...but I guess as the saying goes..."looks can be deceiving!" Opening the door and on the interior...Hot Point had this homely and inviting feel to it that reassured me I made the correct choice for eating here. I'd say most of the tables inside were booths (which most diners prefer) along with a few random tables situated all around. I was greeted by my friendly waitress/server. Before I go into any details...she was so nice and attentive to me...I believe I left her a $10 tip for her kindness. She was just one memorable aspect to Hot Point. I felt very at ease being here...especially during this pandemic where a lot of restaurants don't even offer dine-in service. The menu featured almost every sort of Asian Cuisine item you could think of. I believe I photographed 3 of the pages...but there could have been more, lol. For me eating alone...I specifically went to the Combination Dinner Page where they offered 1 of 4 options to choose from. As you'd expect they were all complete meals with soup included from $9.95 - $12.50. For 2 or more patrons there were Family Dinner Combinations as well for $14 per person. For me...Combo Dinner #4 really stood out. I was sold on it. For $12.50, it was BBQ Pork Fried Rice, Chicken with Broccoli, Fried Shrimp and BBQ Pork. Wow...it wasn't just say....chicken and broccoli as the feature/main dish protein...it was 4 separate combinations encompassing the entire plate! So I'm trying to say...yes, chicken and broccoli, fresh shrimp, layers upon layers of lean cut BBQ pork and fried rice. It was beyond a lot of food! I mean...when you say they "filled up the plate"...that would be an understatement, hehehe. The portion size was tremendous! I absolutely needed a take-home container. I finished probably half the meal. And...this was also where I had a cup of egg-drop soup for a starter with Chinese Noodles served complimentary. For $12.50...it was a bargain! Best of all...ya know...you can find your customary Chinese Restaurant anywhere and everywhere all over the country...but seriously...the food at this Hot Point was outstanding! The chicken and broccoli was picture perfect (lol, even look at my photo!) and these long slices of BBQ Pork were such an unexpected and pleasant surprise. The pork had zero fat on it! It was lean and tender. Also I had 4 giant pieces of breaded shrimp. The jumbo shrimp were a great highlight...no fishiness to them. Finally, the fried rice paired wonderfully with everything. So...here I go again, lol...for $12.50 I got heaping servings of chicken, broccoli, shrimp, pork, rice, cup of soup and crispy Chinese Noodles...I couldn't go wrong with all this. Yes...for my first time ever visiting this random city in Oregon called The Dalles...Hot Point ended my day on the perfect note. I simply can't say enough good things about this place...from the ambiance and setting, friendliest of servers, prices, portion sizes, tastiness and cooking of the food I'd put this place down for 6 stars! Finally and just after coming from driving the Columbia River Gorge and witnessing Waterfall Alley (some of the greatest waterfalls in the USA) I was truly having so much fun on my cross country journey. Wow!! Not only is this restaurant a FANTASTIC VALUE, but it's also delicious! We placed an order to go to take back to our hotel and it was ready in 15 minutes. Husband and I selected the family meal for two and chose the chicken lo mien and sweet and sour chicken as the entrees. The meal came with soooo much food!! Appetizers included two amazing egg rolls, four crab puffs, BBQ pork, and superb hot and sour soup. The meal also came with pork fried rice. We added an extra appetizer of 6 more crab puffs and the entire bill was only $38!! When was the last time you got an overstuffed Chinese food container that had to be taped shut to close it?! I happened upon this restaurant after checking local Yelp reviews while staying in The Dalles. Don't let the non-descript exterior fool you, they have damn good food here. We were helped right away and the food came almost as soon as we ordered it. The portions were huge and both entrees were full of flavor, vegetables and meat. I've been to Chinese restaurants where a lot of the dishes tend to taste the same, not here. Each dish was flavorful and distinctly different from the other (Kung Pao chicken & broccoli beef). I'm sensitive to MSG, and I was a bit worried because everything was so flavorful, but I had no reaction so apparently, they use little or no MSG. Have been going there fairly steadily for two years now. Sort of our 'go-to' for Asian food in The Dalles. Never disappointing; staff are friendly; the place is always clean; food is cooked just right, no soggy veggies, and they try to work with you re specializing a dish. Only thing that could make it a tad better is what's described in the menu doesn't always show up with all the vegetables listed (I'm a vegetarian so I'm really into veggies). Doesn't look like much when driving by but I tell you what! This place food is amazing first off. Reminds me of how Chinese food use to be only better! But that's not the reason for this review... I had called to inform them about not having my crab puffs in my order. The lady, who was really sorry, said she would put an order in for the crab puffs immediately and we wouldn't get charged for it. It wasn't the free appetizers, it was the fact that she acknowledged how she felt bad about missing our order and even gave it to us for free by putting it in immediately. We were traveling through town and found this little gem. The exterior isn't appealing, however don't let that sway you. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive. The food appeared to all be freshly made from scratch and was piping hot. PRO TIP: split your plate. We each ordered an entree and it we easily could have split one entree between the two of us and still have leftovers. It's Americanized Chinese food, with the typical dishes to choose from.
