From the Outside it looks like some random Bakery, down to the faux Wedding Cake in the Window. I walked in and one single solitary tear rolled down my cheek. I smelled Garam Masala. I was home. This is the only place I've found in town so far that isn't afraid to include Flavor when cooking. When the lovely gentleman behind the counter asked how spicy I wanted my food it took everything thing I am to not to reach across the counter and kiss him like we were auditioning for Titanic Part 2: Cruise Control. They have all the Indian Food staples and do them well. I haven't tried the cake, but the cookies go well with the awesome Chai and the Croissants and other pastries are tasty and creative (Paneer Croissant, anyone). "Hot Breads" is totally not what you'd expect. I'd driven by this place many times without a second glance, as I'd assumed that it was a bog-standard Bread bakery. How wrong I was. If it weren't for a co-worker's recommendation, I'd have never discovered this gem of a place. Upon entering, you're greeted with a standard cake display counter, but the real gems to be had here are not up front - no, they're behind the counter and in the display case to the left. Here you'll find all manner of delicious Indian goodies, and some things which I'd never seen before. Croissants stuffed with keema and Tikka Masala? Brilliant! And incredibly yummy! I shared my findings with a few of my Bostonian friends, and I undertook an occasional part-time keema-croissant delivery service. They're that good! They also have other Indian dishes - sadly, I'm just not familiar enough with Indian cuisine to have made educated decisions on what to order there. Suffice to say, the food there is good, and tasty, especially for the more adventurous. Food: Excellent food, some twists on some familiar themes. A bit greasy at times - but they're croissants, so you've got to kind of expect tha. Value: Good value. Tasty food for a reasonable price. Never take late evening takeout of birayani from them, specifically on sunday night. We were returning back home on sunday night after long travel and thought of doing take away from hot breads woburn. When i called them, they said that I can only get the birayani in take away. When i reached at shop, they had ice cold box of birayani ready. When i asked the guy why birayani is nit hot, he explained me that they just kept it in fridge. I asked about the dum, he told me that they prepare the rice and put dum only once in a day. I was surprised at that response, but thought may be thats how it is. Would I come back? Probably not. One one hand it is a superbly cheap Indian buffet. At $6.40 including tax, its hard to find a better deal for all you can eat. The downside is that the food was just okay. I didn't care much for the dishes offered. The chicken dishes were bony as shhh. I had to be super careful with each chew because I would chomp down on a shard of bone every other bite. None of the "classic" Indian buffet varieties like Tikka Masala or Korma were offered. Even the rice was loaded with peppercorns which give you the sensation of biting down on a shard of bone. It was just too much of a pain in the A to eat. Also, the heating dishes are inconsistent. My most favorite restaurant...This is the only place in Boston, or rather I would say in entire MA where you would get the kind of food you eat in India...If you ever come to Boston, never forget to drive few more miles to this place. The four stars are for the food. We had vegetable samosas, which our kids could not get enough of, chicken tikka masala which was delicious, palak paneer that forced us to keep eating even though we were getting full, and the chicken curry which was good, though not the favorite dish on the table. We finally understood that this is a serve yourself, find your own seat kind of place, and we waited in line to place an order. We were told that after we got our food we must wait in line again at the end in order to pay. Not the common way to run a restaurant in the US but then there were only two guys running the place on a Saturday night, one definitely recently immigrated. Maybe this casual vibe reflects the way food shops are run in India? We are not Indian, and it seemed that every other customer was of Middle Eastern descent. Super spicy food with no flavor. Giving 1 start as that's the least I can give. Goat curry had just bones. The very little meat it had was super chewy. They serve pre-made food buy just warming in the microwave in the plastic to-go container. It was worse that the frozen food. I am looking at the positive reviews and they surely look made up. Vada pao was no way like vada pao. Just spicy potato with garam masala and fried earlier in besan batter with too much eating soda in it. No what so ever flavor. To tell you the truth, there was very little difference in taste between the two. Tikka was red from the paprika and Curry was well, curry colored. My husband and I loved Hot Breads. In fact, we were constantly telling people to go there, and it was our go-to Indian place. We usually order chicken korma, naan, and samosas. Usually the korma is flavorful and full of very tender chicken. However, tonight our korma was disappointing. About 50% of the chicken was actually bones, and it was not tender. The worst part, however, was that there were jagged bone shards throughout the entire thing. Picking them out does not make for a enjoyable meal, and frankly, had we missed any, it could have been painful. We both just stopped eating it because there were so many. Since picking a mixed vegetable over paneer or vice versa is like Sophie's Choice for this Indian food obsessed vegetarian, I make sure to get one of each. The pastry encasements range from the hearty chewyness of the buns to the buttery flakiness of the puffs to the orgasmic lushness of the croissants, and are all honestly to die for. If the lunch offerings are the stars of the show, then the sweet pastries are the over-achieving supporting actors of the production. If you find slices of mango cake, strawberry cake, mango mousse, or Devil's Food in there, do not leave without taking home at least one. You can thank me later. As if Hot Breads couldn't be anymore freaking awesome, the staff are sweet, helpful, and friendly, and the prices are dirt cheap (as in 'finance your lunch with the change in your sofa cushions' cheap). When we went to pickup, it got delayed by at least an hour. Reason that was given was that they had too many orders. #1 rule of demand planning, plan accordingly :) Ordered black forest cake, was not the one. Of course we only found out after we did the cake ceremony because icing masked entire cake so couldn't tell. This is second time I ordered this cake (granted that it was 4-years apart), same result when it comes to timeliness. It appears they operate on IST. Good stuff... interesting, mainly due to the fusion-ish nature of the concept... coming from northern Cali where you practically trip over south Asian fusion joints on your way to the post office, this place wasn't too much of a surprise. What was interesting though was the fact that it was relatively affordable. Most fusion places go high end and inflate their prices a bit... this is definitely an old school bakery crossed with a take-out Indian place. I got an assortment of buns, puffs, and croissants as well as a chicken curry. Overall, very satisfying. The naan didn't seem very authentic for some reason... a bit wheat-y and the consistency wasn't quite what I remember, but it was still very tasty. Overall, I'm stuck between 3 and 4 stars... it was good, and if I don't find another Indian place in driving distance it will probably become my go-to for those Saturday/Sunday afternoon curry cravings... but overall it didn't necessarily stand out aside from its novelty pastry value. read more

Finally got the chance to return here a couple of times to try more things, and brought a friend to help me eat more. We were very happy to see that they serve many of our favorite harder-to-find street foods, so on different visits ordered pani puri, vada pav, pav bhaji and medu vada. All came in generous portions with bold flavors. Pani puris came pre-loaded with fillings including sev and boondi in the standard premade puris. The pani was nice - it was missing something but I couldn't put my finger on what, exactly. Still, it was tasty. Vada pav was pre-pressed like a little panini, which was cute, and was nice and spicy. Pav bhaji had a slightly earthy flavor and was fabulously hot and spicy, leaving my tongue tingling happily. Medu vadas came with chutneys and sambhar, and were light and fluffy with nice flavor and texture, with some crunchy dals inside. I like the sambhar here - not too spicy, not too salty, a nice accompaniment and they use curry leaves. There is a good variety of Indian cookies here, as well, many of them eggless. We tried a half-dozen different varieties and especially liked the cardamom cookies. Fruit cake and mango cake both were light, refreshing, and not too sweet. Service is really friendly and courteous. Order at the counter, have a seat, they'll bring you your food or you can go up and get it, and then pay when you're done. You'll leave full and not broke. They do a buffet - standard mix of vegetarian dishes like dals, and meat dishes. I'm a fan of Hot Breads, although I can't dispute the criticisms in the other reviews. This is a weird place, indeed. However, if you are going for the Chicken Tikka Panini, then go and enjoy. $7 including tax gets you a nearly frisbee-sized circular grilled sandwich filled with spicy chicken tikka masala, onions, lettuce, and extra spices for good measure. Add some good cardamom-spiked chai to the mix and for me, it's comfort food. Sometimes when 3pm comes on a weekend and we haven't had lunch yet, my better half and I will split one. Went there after reading the yelp reviews and rating. This was the worst eating experience I had in a long time. We did not try their pastries, cookies or bread and those may be still good. We ordered Mirchi bhaji (chillies dipped in batter and fried) , pani-puri, chicken tikka and naan. Well bhaji was pre-made we knew when we ordered. So did not have a big expectation from it. Pani puri was ok. The filling was good, but the pani was just made from the store bought pani-puri mixes. Chicken tikka and the naan was a big let down. The chicken did not seem like they had cooked in a tandoor oven. It was just sauted with big chunks of bell peppers and onions. So big that I one chunk was half a bell pepper, they didn't even bother to cut. Ginger and garlic was still uncooked and gave a bad taste. On top of that it was soaked in oil. read more

And that level of excitment -- that media craze -- that's what I felt about Hot Breads when it first opened. Finally, a place I can get my chicken tikka masala wrapped in a puff pastry served with some chai by a fat Indian woman. Oh, how it brought back memories of malaria, pickpockets, and New Delhi. So I finally went. And there's where it all went wrong.. Remember the first time you had sex? That incredibly awkwardness.. not sure where to put it, still not sure if you're gay or straight, and thinking to yourself.. man, jerking off is so much easier. Finally you climaxed.. two seconds in.. but it was all a big let down. And that's what Hot Breads was like. The pastries were soggy, minimally filled, and old. The dosa was spicy, but underwhelming. The vegetables, same. The only saving grace was the chai. It was milky and thick like a girl in Ohio -- but unfortunately this too was a let down as it was served in a cup so small, you'd think you were in Africa. So on the whole -- would I go back.. maybe, to give it another go. But all said and done, this place suffers from the same problems of most things Indian -- great concept, terrible execution. read more

When I had dosas served, it was half baked on one side and the masala was almost spoiled. If ghee rice and chicken/mutton mixed together is what they call biriyani and thats the best that they could do, hey you simply cant blame them. I was hurt deep in my heart on seeing what they served us and had the courage to call it biriyani. And my friend said it was the best that he had..lol. This is such an awesome and different kind of bakery. They have Indian bakery stuff and also the western options. A definite must visit. Try the paneer masala croissant and bun. They also have vada pav which is this potato mix with a fried chick pea batter smooshed between 2 buttered buns. So good. The pav bhaji is also good and very spicy. It's like a curry sandwich. The reason this place is getting 2 stars instead of 1 is the fact that their mango cake was absolutely delicious and we will be coming back for that, no doubt. However, I will not be having their food again. I ordered chicken kabob, and the cashier had asked me if I wanted what looked like ready made Chili Chicken and Chicken 65. I asked if my chicken kabob would be fresh and he muttered that it was and so I just went with that. When I got home and ate it, I realized that the chicken kabobs used were the same ones I buy from a local indian market FROZEN for whenever I want a quick meal. The kabob was not fresh and it was swimming in grease and onions. Needless to say, I will not return for the food but will always be back for the cake as it is still very delicious. read more
