Angelo's pizza. Sooo bomb!

I wanted an alternative NYE. I was tired of getting dolled up and hitting the bars in San Diego, or heading to downtown. So I mapped myself and my best friend a road trip up the 395. I am not sure how this hostel landed on my radar, but I am glad it did! We booked in advance. My other friend booked 2 days prior and there was still availability. We all booked the PCT 12-bed room, for $30/pp. We stayed for one night, New Years Eve. And it was a blast! The guy working that night was Angelo. He was great! We checked in with him, he handed us sheets & towels, showed us around, and showed us our beds for the night. We got in pretty late, around 10 pm. So we decided to stay in that night and hang out with others who were staying there. We brought in midnight in the kitchen drinking pink champagne we brought and eating homemade pizza by Angelo. It was great! I have stayed in hostels before, so I knew what to expect, my friends have not haha. But they enjoyed it! This place is very popular with climbers, I would say almost 80% of they people there were there to climb. We were pretty much the only 3 that did not climb lol. Tips: bring shower shoes, blow dryer, and your own soap.

Cool community and resource | Great place to stay $ I stayed here earlier this year and loved it. Matt is really friendly and the whole hostel felt like a neat community of climbers and outdoor enthusiasts. Community. Bishop has become a hugely popular area amongst boulderers, so sometimes finding a spot to camp at the designated campgrounds may be tough (especially if you're coming in late at night for a weekend's stay). The pit toilets smell rank, too. I used to camp right next to the boulders, next to the Get Carter boulder, but apparently they patrol the area frequently so that isn't an option anymore. This place is your best bet. Pay a little extra instead to keep warm indoors, take a hot shower, sleep in a cozy bed, and sing along or play ping pong (or beer pong) with other climbers in the house. Share beta. Or train harder in the little shed outside. Cook up a sweet meal in the kitchen. Look up your projects in their library of climbing books. Highly recommend calling or e-mailing the place instead of relying on the availability checker. I remember Matt said that the little availability application checker restricted/limited him from putting more people in some rooms. I'll be staying there again this November :) Climb on!

The Hostel California is the most inexpensive and welcoming adult-only dorms & private room hostel in the town of Bishop, CA. The Hostel provides guests loaner bikes, a shared kitchen, ping-pong tables, a pool & a gorgeous communal courtyard/lounge area for guests and visitors to hang out in. Staff is helpful and accomadating. Think visitors center but with 24 Hour assistance. Recommend visitors book a room or drop by and tour this hostel when in town. Amenities are open and available when staying at the hostel.

I always wondered why there was never a central hub for climbers and hikers to stay at! So glad Hostel California is here. Matt is the best host I have ever come into contact with. He is very accommodating to any need and he successfully creates a friendly and rad environment. It is awesome that there are guidebooks, shoes, pads, harnesses, etc. stored in the hostel for guests to borrow. My night stay was in the Sad room, the private room that is $60 a night. There are also beds for $20. Super comfortable, was able to hook up to the wifi. I was in town with a film crew and the hostel was able to accommodate all of us. We enjoyed dinner on the nice patio out side the dining room. A thunder storm actually ran through the town. Our little house and the entire town lost power for an hour, and Matt went into action and lit up the beautiful Victorian house with candelabras. He made sure everyone was comfortable and safe. Once the power came back on, we jammed with the in-house musical instruments! I can safely say I have never had this much fun during a night in Bishop. After camping for a while and I desire a shower and a warm bed I will always choose Hostel California!

A home away from home. The folks here treated us like family and we always felt welcomed. The beds are comfortable, the place itself is a beautiful retired bed and breakfast, and everything is clean. The kitchen and common facilities are open for use and are clean and new, and they even have bicycles you can use for the day. They have board games and books, comfy couches and good vibes. The owner, Matt, is accommodating and always trying to make everyone feel at home. He is knowledgable of the area and surrounding for backpackers, rock climbers, and all visitors. Overall, it's the best hostel I've had the pleasure of staying at. I highly recommend it to all JMT and PCT hikers. Can't beat the price ($20 for a bed) for a hot shower and clean bed and definitely can't beat the ambiance and company. Stay here!

Overview: affordable for mammoth, cool people, and decent housing…read more ---- I decided to solo travel for snowboarding and booked a few days here, having no expectations and never having stayed at a hostel before in America. The process of picking up the keys was easy, there's a lobby area on a separate building and a bulletin board with an envelope and your name on it with instructions and your keys. The parking lot is pretty tight but doable and they have a motel in a separate building to the hostel. The hot tub is only for motel guests tho. The hostel has different room options with the cheapest one being a mixed dorm with 6 beds, I think I paid around $50 per night and it really depends on the time of the season for price fluctuations. They have more private rooms for more expensive which is a nice option if you are staying with someone you know, however the walls are quite thin here. In the private room, it was located next to the kitchen and you can practically hear everything through them, so not much privacy in that regard. I've met really cool people here and had a great time getting to know some of them. I even saw a person from my first trip on my second one as well! I also got to snowboard with some of the people in the dorm I shared which was awesome. You meet people of all walks of life here. The kitchen situation was straightforward, there are 2 fridges and you label your stuff with a sticky label and a sharpie with your name and checkout date. There are also communal dishes and utensils and a microwave, but so stove/oven so be prepared! I did see a mouse on the very first night I stayed there too but it was one of the cute small ones hahah. There's one bigger personal bathroom on the first floor and then the shared ones upstairs. The location is also prime for walking to the gondola and it's near some great restaurants. ---- Overall: my new go-to spot for staying in Mammoth, great for solo travelers or friends who want somewhere affordable to stay at, many pros to this place that outweigh its cons

The place is clean and well-kept, with a nice kitchen that guests can use, which is a big plus. Rooms are simple--some with bunk beds, others private. A bear had ripped into someone's vehicle for food while we were there, so always store it properly. Overall, a clean, budget-friendly stay with handy kitchen facilities--great for a short stop in Mammoth.

The room is small, as expected, but perfect for a solo traveler or couple looking for a clean, comfortable place to shower, cool off, and rest. The AC absolutely cranks, which was heaven after being out in the heat all day. The owners have added so many thoughtful touches: toothbrushes, single-use toothpaste, makeup remover wipes, bath gels, plus a mini fridge and microwave in the room. When I checked in, I was greeted with bottled water, fruit, and cookies, such a kind welcome after a long day. There are also cute patios with hanging lights where you can sit and eat takeout, and there's even a homemade ice cream shop right next door with a really vibey outdoor patio. One of the owners mentioned a nearby trail just behind the motel, and I'm so glad I listened. I ended up walking through the beautiful Mary DeDecker native plant garden alongside a babbling creek with little bridges and an incredible sunset view over the mountain ridge. I've…read morebeen visiting Mammoth a few times a year for over a decade and I feel like when searching for lodging this place always has vacancies so it scared me off. We usually do Airbnb because I like having a more homie feel when staying for longer trips. The prices here are cheaper than many other area hotels so I was leery. I've got to say this place greatly EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS. We got a king suite, it had a large living area, full size refrigerator and kitchenette area with toaster, microwave, toaster oven, and hot plate. I was initially leery about the sofa bed because the mattress was soft and super thin but I ended up sleeping really well on it and my mom slept in the bedroom and said the king bed was the most comfortable bed she's ever slept on. This is NOT a luxury hotel, it's older, quaint, and nothing fancy but it absolutely does the job. Big bonus is that it's dog friendly and our room opened to the forest so I could take the dogs right out the door to potty and walk around. It's also walkable to several restaurants including Schatts (one of our must stops when we are here). Breakfast was mediocre but enough to fill an empty stomach and even if breakfast wasn't offered the stay would be well worth the price. The only kind of con is there is no central heating or air. It was 26° when we were here and the only heat is a propane stove with no thermostat or a plug in radiant heater for the bedroom (the wall heater in the room didn't work). All in all we were still warm enough but it was impossible to keep a steady temp in the room.

After receiving an auto generated message "... a friendly reminder that you are scheduled to check out tomorrow 2026-09-09. Check out time is before 11:00 AM," we had a knock on our door just before 8am. "Don" - who introduced himself as "from the office", morning coffee cup in hand, needed our car moved so the crew could begin resurfacing the parking lot. This was the first time I was hearing about this and we were THE ONLY OCCUPIED UNIT IN THIS SECTION. Seems the resurfacing could have been mentioned AT ANY TIME from the moment I booked the reservation and certainly well before 8am the day of check-out. One reason I went with a kitchenette suite was the assigned parking space in front of the unit, which I knew would be convenient for us 2 gals, that aren't exactly Spring chickens, unloading and loading my SUV packed with items needed for our 2 week road trip through the Sierras. I pointed out the message from the previous night I received from them to be out by 11am. He clarified he wasn't asking us to leave, just move the car out of the lot. I explained that we needed to pack the vehicle so we could checkout. I asked, if this was inconvenient, why were we booked in this room for 3 nights? I'm sure the crew had to be booked in advance, weren't they? Don told me no - A BOLDFACE LIE! 'It's a seasonal thing. Depends on the weather, which is good now.' ANYONE who has had to book ANY KIND of large repair job KNOWS it needs to be booked IN ADVANCE. I commented on how good the weather was PRIOR to Labor Day yet, only AFTER Labor Day weekend is the lot being resurfaced so, clearly, he scheduled this resurfacing to begin after the last holiday of the Summer, knowing he had a reservation booked in unit #304, 3 nights, checking out TUESDAY the 8th. His reply to this was, 'C'mon, work with me here. I paid a lot of money for this.' To which I replied, 'I AM working with you, Don. The agreement, and what I've paid for, is to checkout by 11am, using the space assigned to my unit. We WILL be out before 11.' He seemed to forget: I PAID MONEY - - IN ADVANCE!!! I had to further explain that we still had to load the SUV and we would NOT be willing to walk back and forth from the unit, across a parking lot that's being slurried, to do this. Apparently, it hadn't occurred to him that if the lot is being slurried while we're in the unit, we would then be walking across slurry to load. Not that he thought much of us paying guests. We finished getting dressed, packed the car and departed before 9:15. As we left I said to the foreman, 'Sorry for the delay, we weren't made aware of this work until an hour ago.' 'No problem, happens all the time. The job was booked in July, but we still have to wait.' 'Really? Two months ago? I was told by Don he didn't book the work in advance, it was seasonal.' This got a chuckle, 'No, we were booked for today.' Of COURSE they were! On what planet can you call any kind of work crew to come over and start work at 8am because the weather is good?!? I booked the room 8.7.26 via Hotels.com, a month BEFORE our arrival and a month AFTER Don booked the resurfacing. Add in the fact that hot water took 12 minutes to reach the taps in our room (yes, we timed it), and I can't recommend staying at Holiday Haus Motel. But Christina is a gem!
