Really disappointed to have to write such a poor review of this hostel. In general, I love getting to stay in hostels where they exist in the US, but in this case, save yourself the trouble and find a hotel in Mammoth Lakes instead. I am used to someone being at a front desk on arrival, but no one was here when we showed up (not at any crazy time either, a bit before 5pm) and an envelope with our keys was left pinned to a board. No real issue there. Our party of 6 got to our room of 6 beds, to find someone had left all of their gear still on one of the beds. Turns out the hostel had double-booked the same bed. After a few tries of calling, we were able to get keys to another room to get the correct number of beds, but had no sheets or pillow for the new bed. Called the hostel's phone number again, and was told to "pick the lock" to the storage closet to get sheets. Still no in-person interaction with whoever is supposed to be working here, and no pillow either. Was able to use a camp pillow I brought with me, but after paying $64 per person for a single night here, I would sure expect a open bed with clean sheets and a pillow as the bare minimum. Not to mention other minor things around the hostel, such as absolutely no towels (hand or shower) in the kitchen or either men's or women's bathrooms, unless you count the tackily framed one, and splintering bunk beds that look ready to fall down. Seems like whoever runs this place simply doesn't care. As I mentioned at the start, I love hostels and wish I could recommend this one, but unfortunately in this case, get more out of your money and stay at any other place besides here in Mammoth Lakes.

I'm solo on this trip up to Mammoth to winter fly fish. Thought I would check out an hostel so I booked through one of the booking sites and got a rate for $67 per night. I showed up and the nice woman who checked me in and explained that I got a "queen" room. I had no clue that I had booked a private room at the hostel. The room was spartan but clean. This being winter the room was well heated and very comfortable temperature wise. I'm older than anyone there and kept to myself. For the most part there were a lot of young people staying at the hostel. Walls were a bit thin so it was a bit noisy as my room was next to the kitchen/dining area but everyone turned in relatively early so noise wasn't an issue. The hostel had a living room with a TV, a well equipped kitchen and a big dining area. The bathroom was well maintained and clean. They offer shampoo, soap and towels. The hostel had ample parking. Mammoth has a lot of places to eat so if cooking isn't your thing you won't starve. Flyfishing trips for the most part is where I come back exhausted and eat, clean up and fall asleep. The hostel experiment was great and I highly recommend Moderne Hostel

This is the worst hostel I have ever stayed at. There was a huge bathroom leak and sputtered water on my head while at the sink. The manager would not change reservation, even with24 hours notice. Unhelpful and unfriendly to say the least. The location is in the Main Street and close to restaurants.

Yes, there is heating. There is a communal kitchen with cooking utensils and a refrigerator. I'm assuming there is a coffee maker, but I don't drink coffee so didn't look.

Heavy winds from 20-30 miles per hour with gusts ranging from 40-50 mph. I checked CalTrans every hour over night and they finally made the call for chains required on the 395, travel cautiously if you must drive warning. Crystal was very helpful and understanding of the weather situation along with delays in driving. I have never driven in those conditions and every forum related to mammoth mountain (Facebook and Instagram) said it was safe to stay out if you weren't in Mammoth already. Crystal, with the help of my Expedia agent, refunded my reservation despite their cancellation policy. Thank you so much Crystal! Elevated hostel stay if your used to being homeless and don't mind being your own hotel security…read more Let me start with the good news. Check-in? Easy. Room? Clean and exactly as pictured. Bathtub? Big and unlimited hot water. Now for the immersive experience. If you've ever wanted to know what it's like to sleep inside a large cardboard box with a dozen or so other adults, kids and yippy dogs, this is your opportunity. The aesthetic is comfort economy. The acoustics? Philharmonic-level clarity. Thin walls. Hardwood floors. Hollow-core doors. Generous gaps under the doors. The result? You will become intimately familiar with the comings and goings of every guest. Conversations in other rooms? Crystal clear. Footsteps? Surround sound. Door slams? Will make you jump out of your skin when your dead asleep even with earplugs in. This lodging option could work if when you roll the dice, ALL the other guest are considerate, self-aware humans. You may only hear every day pleasantries and loud flatulence. Unfortunately, we rolled snake eyes and both nights we were woken at 2 a.m. Night One: 2am door slamming, foot stomping, and blasting "how to make a million" on TicTok and smoking directly outside our open window. Later that day apres-ski, the same guests were screaming "Help, Help", and when we rushed to respond, the moment of panic appeared to pass as he got his joint lit. We called in the issues. Management reviewed the cameras, gave the other guests "a firm talking to", and we were told management is available by phone until 1 a.m., and after that, we should call the police ourselves. Nothing says "relaxing getaway" like being deputized as the overnight security team. Night two featured another 2am wakeup call of prolific barfing, and enthusiastic drunken attempts to convince women to come inside. After failing to persuade anyone to continue the fun, to their credit, the guests entered quietly. We still heard everything. Because you hear everything. Now, about the "Bed and Breakfast" designation. We chose this place over our usual Mammoth Mountain Inn or Empeiria High Sierra stay because "bed and breakfast" sounded quaint and charming. We imagined something at least moderately delightful before hitting the slopes for the day -- especially at $600 per night. Breakfast consisted of what can best be described as a 7-Eleven survival kit: shelf-stable vanilla-flavored milk, Frosted Flakes, and an oily convenience store Danish of indeterminate age. I would not call this breakfast. It's what you would find if you were foraging abandoned buildings post-apocalypse. You would find it because everyone before you passed it up. To be fair, with one exception, the other guests were perfectly polite. One yippy dog made itself known throughout our stay but respected quiet hours. Management did their best from afar, to reign in the obnoxious guests. But here's the issue: if anyone talks loudly, walks heavily, whispers in the hallway, owns enthusiastic footwear, or makes any post-midnight life choices... you will know. With no 24 hour guest support, guests are simply at the mercy of the other guests.

There were dirty towels and napkins everywhere, including one towel that may have had blood on it. It clearly had not been cleaned when the last guest left. We were moved to a room that was at least clean but we checked the mattress for bed bugs and found black specs in all the crevices. Ended up just booking a stay somewhere else. The manager will not refund us and claims we got $250 in "upgrades". All communication is done through text. I never saw anyone at the front desk. I'd sleep in my car before I booked this place again.

The location is excellent -- less than a 5-minute walk to the gondola. They also offer ski valet right in the lobby, which makes the walk even shorter. Huge plus: boot dryers. Check-in was super easy, and we upgraded our room to one of their "condos." Just to set expectations: this isn't a full condo. It's essentially a hotel room with a small living area and a Murphy bed. Still comfortable and totally fine for what we needed. The best part of this hotel is that it's dog-friendly -- and truly dog-friendly. Any size dog, big or small, and there were dogs everywhere (including ours). There's a forested area behind the hotel that's perfect for letting your pup play in the snow. One downside: some guests don't pick up after their dogs, so there was dog poop around even though the hotel provides bag dispensers. Maybe adding more (or enforcing cleanup) would help. The price is good, the hotel is clean, but it is old -- very old -- and definitely showing its age. The hallway floors are uneven, the elevator makes some questionable noises, and nothing about it feels modern. That said, after skiing all day, the four hot tubs and heated pool are amazing and very much appreciated. I stay here for convenience, not luxury. The beds are comfortable, towels are clean, and that's honestly all we need. Plus, it's close to The Yodler, our favorite restaurant. Nothing felt refreshed or well cared for, which is unacceptable at this price point. Breakfast was equally terrible. The food was cold, the omelet was tough and rubbery, and overall the quality was far below expectations--borderline inedible. Between the noise, lack of cleanliness, outdated rooms, and overpriced rates, this place is absolutely not worth the money.
