This restaurant had been deteriorating for years, to the extent we'd stopped visiting. With the new management and ongoing renovations, we thought we'd try again. One perennial favorite was the homemade onion rings. After perusing the new menu, we asked if they still had "their" onion rings, and were assured they did. What was brought out was completely different; generic frozen onion rings, which we immediately refused. The waitress didn't even set them down, she simply disappeared, stating she wasn't sure she'd be allowed to take them off the check, but would ask. She never told us the response, just presented us with the full bill. When we spoke to the owner over this $3.49 item, we were told that since we'd ordered them, we'd have to pay for them, or he'd immediately call the police. He further stated we were "banned for life." Not necessary, sir - that attitude, plus the cold Reuben sandwich delivered along with the onion rings, wouldn't put me back in one of your restaurants at gunpoint. read more

We came in on a Sunday afternoon, a time when the restaurant and bar were dead. Our waitress was very unpleasant and treated us as though we were a nuisance. The food took over an hour to be prepared, and no one seemed to care. Needless to say I am not happy about the service here. When the food finally arrived, my burger was well done after ordering rare. The honey mustard tasted expired. Clearly agitated at this point we expressed our concern the the server and asked to speak to the manager. After another 20 min the waitress told us some of the food would be taken of the bill. Clearly this place is poorly managed. Any good manager would have come out and spoken to us herself. After reading some of the other reviews you notice a pattern of poor service and shit food. I came to meet some friends and was told the kitchen was closed.... However, there was a mistake with one of the orders and so after 10 pm they had to redo the order. The waitress seemed less than interested in accommodating me even with a drink once she made it clear the kitchen was closed. I live literally within blocks of this place. This was a great surprise to finally go into this place. A very good selection of beers, a large bar and eating area with a good atmosphere. The service was very prompt and courteous. I didn't have a chance to try any of the food but what I saw coming out of the kitchen looked and smelled good. I will definitely be returning and would recommend people to try it out. read more

I have always liked this local dining venue, but something has to be done about their terrible service. Once seated, a waitress took our drink orders and didn't return for 15 minutes! We could see her chatting with the other waitresses by the kitchen! Finally, when she did return, she gave us drinks, then disappeared again. Always liked their Prime Rib Thursday night. Took forever to get waited on, ordered a vodka martini which took so long I got concerned, but finally it showed up. Ordered Medium Rare Prime Rib and check the picture not medium rare. So I nicely asked and the waitress was great and put in for a order for a rare piece. This is an all you can eat Prime Rib deal so if your into quantity you will like it. Sadly I'm a quality guy. The second PR can and it was tiny. What they do, as you order seconds it goes from a Queen cut to smaller ham slice size. So my replacement was a ham slice. So I explained no we are still trying to get the first time right. So strike two, a baseball reference. Finally on the third pitch my medium rare came, it was medium rare and ice cold. Which tells me the meat is precook and warmed up when you order. Awesome food and great service. Very reasonably priced. We loved the wings and the peanut butter pie was amazing.

We came here for a private party over the weekend. There is a separate room which we used that holds approximately 40-50 people comfortably. It was also free to use the room, assuming that you ordered food in advance. Is it the fanciest place you will ever be? Probably not. But, it worked out very well and fit our needs. The staff was very helpful and made sure everything was running smoothly. The food - sandwiches - was tasty. We also had macaroni salad and pasta salad. I didn't have any of the macaroni, but the pasta salad was off the charts delicious. They didn't have any desserts to choose from, but you could bring your own and drop them off in advance, provided they were store bought and not homemade. I would definitely use this room again if I had a need in the future. read more

I have been to this bar pretty frequently because I hang out with a group of friends who insist on heading there (I think it is the cheap beer specials). What do you trade for the that cheap Molson? Answer: food quality and service. Wing night. Terrible wings (well overdone. dry, sometimes hard as rock). Don't expect those wings to come out quick. Service: Slow, rude and frustrating. I can't count how many times our server disappeared and I bought beers at the bar even though we had a tab open at the table. My friends often order two beers at time because of the disappearing servers. Food: Limited. Hit and miss. 30% of the menu is good (pizza, Stromboli, pierogies are good). The real kicker was when they literally pulled a menu out of a newly arrived party goer and cleared our tables, then told us to get out. Nice. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!! Customer service should be the number one priority in any consumer business....Well this place is severely lacking horribly!! The fact that a large group gives numerous notices in advance of our arrival, and when we get there the absolutely cocky and extremely rude hostesses refuse to accomodate us, and make us sit separately is terrible customer service. Our group tries to meet monthly since we no longer see each other at work and they refused to accommodate us and let us sit together when they clearly had more than enough room upon our arrival. Don't you understand customers are your source of income??? Without customers you have no business. This was my first stop at the Paddock. I have passed it for 25 years and was curious. I noticed that there had been a major upgrade to the outside of the building and decided today was the day! As you drive into the "parking lot" you think of Fallujah.....really in bad disrepair. Holes, ruts, no lines, etc. But hey, so what. On entering you immediately notice "the smell". It is not overpowering or anything but makes one wonder what the heck is causing it. Not a clean fresh smell but once you look around you can kind of tell why. The carpet is old and torn in many places. The booths are dated (60's?) and have tape on them to cover the rips. Many of the walls have panel which I will assume came from a change in the early 70's. Classic. The men's room was not particularly clean but did the job so lets leave that one alone. Plenty of TV's. I counted 22 though I may be off a few. Nice new back room on the dining room for private parties and it looks super. You can see that there is work being done because there is new exposed drywall that is not yet painted. In general the interior is dated. Having watched way too much Restaurant Rescue ShowI fear what the kitchen was like if the dining room was that dirty and dated. The Quesada's were SUPER. Really top notch and the price for them excellent. The Popeye chicken sandwich was just crazy salty and over seasoned, however, the server was a great guy. I am willing to bet they can turn out good bar food there but doubt I will take the opportunity to find out. Though it appears they are making efforts to modernize and clean up the place it is simply not even in the done yet zip code. With all the great places to eat in the valley they need to pump up their game. They seem like nice folks there and I did enjoy the 80's music the whole time. Visited the Paddock last night for dinner with my wife around 9PM. Seated near the jukebox and noisy bar. I ordered a beer and my wife an ice tea. My beer was barely cold. We had nachos which were nothing special. My wife had a Crab Cake sandwich which was cold. When we told the server she offered to have it warm up not replace it. I ordered the all you can eat wing special. My first batch was minimally sauced. My second batch (which was 5 wings) had enough sauce for 20. Our service just said "sorry" I paid the full check and tipped her according to her level of service and concern - $1. I usually try to avoid chain restaurants because of the this type of food quality and shitty service. I have been a Paddock customer for decades but since the new owner have had it has been on a steady decline. I had to give it one star to start the review, it should really get no stars. The food and service are generally very good. My only issue is that they allow smoking on the patio. People grab a seat at the bar inside and then step out onto the patio the have a smoke, so they end up taking up a seat at the bar and the patio. It makes it nearly impossible to sit outside and enjoy a meal. read more

I used to frequent the Fogelsville location often. Food was very good as was the service. I was excited to see Hops coming to my end of town and restoring what was a local landmark eatery. However, we have been there twice and received slow service. The second time, our waitress would just lean over to check on us they were so understaffed. The food was decent the first time but disappointing the second time. We ordered the homemade perogies They were delicious. But there was only 3 of them as an app. 5 would have been perfect. For an entree, my 'hot ham and cheese' wasn't even toasted and my date's Rachel was bland despite being covered in cheese. The drinks were cheap, and that's nice but my rocks drink came out watery, which means either it sat for too long waiting to be served or their ice is not being kept at the right temp. I really wanted to like this place but I can't say that we'd go back. There are too many other options out there to settle for 'meh'. Hope things change soon. One other thing--the remodel looks amazing and is a real upgrade to the area. Just extend that to the ladies room, the food and the service. read more

Took my girlfriend here after a long week, hoping to have a nice dinner. We've been at the sister location in Fogelsville and always had a good meal and great service. Alas, this was not the case here. Even though it was a Friday evening at 7:30, there was no waiting. Not a good omen. Went in and stood around 5 minutes while the "host" ran around, pretty much just goofing with the servers and half-heartedly wiping off one table. Finally, "Just you two? How about this table" pointing next to the front door. My bad because all you get in winter is the cold air and smoke from "Cancer Court" (smoking around the front door). OK, not on them, though whomever decided to squeeze in one table there shows they don't really care. Anyway, we're both starving and look over the menu and waited. And waited. And waited. 10 minutes for someone to finally ask "Did anyone take care of you guys?" Now, mind you, it wasn't busy, at all. And this is just for a drink. The server takes the order and the drinks come promptly. We order, both got the special fish & chips. I also ordered mushroom soup. The soup shows up promptly and is very good. Hot, flavorful, seasoned just right. That was the highlight of the meal. We begin the wait again for the meal. Not overly long, maybe 15 minutes, but our server walks by and says in a angry tone "Didn't anyone bring your meals out? They said they were going to..." Couple of minutes go by and I see her grab our plates from another server. Sure enough, the food isn't overly hot. Not ice cold but hardly hot. The fish was OK, mine was greasy, hers not as much. The fries weren't good, seemed to be bottom of the basket or the oil hadn't been changed in a long time. And too salty. Our server did visit twice to ask if we needed anything but based on what we had to this point and it being the end of a long week, I wasn't really in the mood to send food back. The plates were cleared and the server said "I'll get the check." Never asked about dessert or even try to sell something. It was almost that we were annoying the server, or so it seemed. The check took about another 5 minutes to arrive but my CC was taken instantly. Even the pen the server left was junk and was out of ink after one use. I was going to ask to see the manager but the "host" was outside in Cancer Court, smoking and looking at his phone with another smoker. We just left. I had high hopes as I know Hops has spent more than a little money on this location but I won't be back. The whole experience seemed like we as diners were more of an annoyance and to be tolerated than to be treated like someone who wants to spend our hard-earned money. The worst customer service I have ever experienced. I have never come across such rude staff in all my life. As a European visitor myself and colleagues were submitted to treatment which can only be described as borderline xenophobic but apart from that the beer and food is really good. If you put money in the juke box they will cut your song off halfway through to out their own music on from their iPod in the back and then when you tell them that you paid money to play songs they get nasty with you for confronting them. I've eaten her several times and have been happy with the food. They have a very good Rueben sandwich here. Ruebens are my favorite hot sandwich so I've had them many many places and Hops is ranked up their in my top 5. Maybe even too 3. Their wings are usually cooked well. A little crispy the way I like them. I have gotten a very over cooked order now and again. The Spankin wings which are their hottest are delicious. Have a great kick but still really good flavor. Kudos to the chef for that one. They have a good variety of wing flavors. Most I've tried have been good. A few aren't my fav but to each their own. The biggest down fall is the place is always so loud. It's a busy place so there is usually tons of background noise. The service is hit or miss. We have had great service but we have also had mediocre service. We will definitely continue to come back though. The food is worth the loud atmosphere. read more

This is going to be a rather lengthy post but for anyone who still cares about good customer service it is worth your time. I have organized 40-50 Happy Hours at work and have always found the restaurants most accommodating. Examples: PJ Whelihans, Ringers Roost, Roosevelt's, Chickie and Petes,Brew Works, Tilted Kilt, Bar Louie's...to name a few. After all restaurants are in the business of serving customers so who would not welcome a large or small group? I can tell you who that would be Hopps at the Paddock. About 2 years ago I organized a Happy Hour at Hops at the Paddock and was able to have a decent size group in the back room. I called several days before the planned Happy Hour and was told the room in the back is now $1000 to use. Now, that is laughable, because the Paddock is far from upscale. Another alternative for those interested in a much more customer oriented place try the 1760 House or Shanty where private rooms are at no cost with a group of 20-25. I was told that on a Friday night the Paddock does not take reservations, which I understood, but if I got there and there were tables available they could accommodate my group. When I arrived, the dining room was all but empty. One table had 4 people and another table had 2 people. I asked to put some tables together to accommodate about 20-30 people. Most restaurants are grateful for customers but I had to deal with absolute arrogance and rude management. The "manager" kept saying they could not accommodate a group that size. My question to them was there are 20 plus tables available what is the difference between 7 tables of 4 or one table of 28? When I said I was going to be very vocal with my displeasure, I was told they do not care as they have plenty of other customers. I can only assume the success of the Paddock has gone to Scott Hops head and filtered down to the staff. The staff basically either ignored me, when I expressed my displeasure with their attitude, threatened to call the cops and about 1 hour into our happy hour told everyone to leave and cleaned off the table. When the "manager" was rude why would the staff be pleasant? I admit I was very vocal with my displeasure with the treatment I received but I have been in Customer Service for 36 years and my company gives excellent customer service and I at least expect average customer service but what I got was downright deplorable. I am torn because I frequent Hops at Fogelsville at least 4 times a month and have never had anything but excellent customer service and have a great rapport with the staff. I do know I will NEVER ever step foot in the Paddock and will recite my experience to anyone who asks and may seriously consider boycotting the Fogelsville location. No worries, according to the staff, they have more business than they can handle. I can honestly say every employee was downright rude and they can thank the "Manager" Derrick Morgan for their attitudes. (I have no idea if that is truly his name). Ask anyone who has ever dealt with me, I am the most understanding and accommodating person, but when people are downright disrespectful I cannot tolerate that behavior. I know with all the options available for dining, if I owned or managed a restaurant, I would be cognizant of my customers and customer service. My apologies to my fellow friends and employees for an utterly disturbing happy hour. I will say, when my husband I left we headed to PJ Whelihans and the manager greeted us...with good to see you...how have you been. Now that is customer service. read more
