We decided to be adventurous and try somewhere new... and wow, did that adventure take a turn. When we arrived, we sat down and waited. And waited. And waited some more. At one point I started to wonder if we were part of a social experiment called "How Long Before They Give Up?" With only two waiters in sight, I finally got up and asked for menus myself--because apparently, self-service begins immediately. We ordered iced tea, a pizza and wings for my husband, and a Reuben with fries for me. Simple enough, right? Our drinks arrived in red cups, and after one sip I realized... surprise! It was water. Not even a convincing attempt at tea--just plain, honest tap water living its best life. We flagged someone down, sent it back, and round two of "Is It Tea or Is It Water?" began. Spoiler alert: it was water again later. When the food showed up, things didn't exactly turn around. My Reuben was so soggy it could've qualified as a wetland. The fries were salted like they were prepping for a long winter, and somehow still managed to taste not fresh. My husband's pizza looked impressive at first--piled high with toppings--but quickly revealed itself as a structurally unsound, soggy situation. Then came the drink refills. The waiter confidently brought what he called iced tea. We took a sip... and I'm happy to report the water remained consistent all evening. As if this wasn't enough, it was karaoke night. And not just any karaoke night--full-volume, no-holds-barred karaoke. The music was so loud we couldn't hear each other, but honestly, that might have been a blessing. First visit to Hops & Dough taproom - when we got there, there were a few tables already taken, but still good amount of room to spare. We were greeted right away and offered water or our choice of beverage. Our waiter was awesome and offered suggestions based on what we said we liked. As we waited we were able to enjoy music since it wasn't too loud in there. After our drinks were delivered, we were finally ready to order. Our appetizer came out quickly and very hot. Made perfectly as described. The fried pickles were sour but the salty (but not overly so) breading just added to the amazing taste! The mozzarella sticks were big and had an awesome cheese pull to them! IYKYK We also decided to share wings and a pizza! The wings were huge and flavorful. The pizza had a nice crisp crust and was packed with toppings! We will definitely be back to try more off the menu! read more

My husband and I were looking to try another rendition of the Monte Cristo last week since it's our favorite and I had heard that Hops & Dough had a good one so we ventured right in to go try it. When we arrived we were immediately greeted and prompted to seat anywhere we liked. We started by ordering the Chips Trio which at first I was unsure if I liked it or not but with every bite I took it grew on me. I think that the very different flavors that are in these 3 items just took my taste buds by surprise but it actually was quite good and I enjoyed it. I ordered the Holy 505 and my husband ordered the Monte Cristo of course - literally the reason we came. I forgot to take a photo of my hamburger and the "original" Monte Cristo that came to the table - my bad. My burger was HUGE. It was on Texas Toast and you know that saying that "everything is bigger in Texas" really is no joke and neither was this Monster of a burger. It was very juicy and so filing and the fries along side had a delightful crunch and taste. As per my husband's Monte Cristo there was a little bit of a hiccup on his first one - where the outside of the sandwich was soggy and not crispy but the kitchen took full responsibility mentioning that it was breaded wrongly but that they were more than happy to remake it - which they did and that's where the photo below comes in where it doesn't show the fries next to it. The New Monte Cristo was EVERYTHING we had been craving and wanting and lived up to the hype that people had been creating. The crust on the outside had that wonderful crunch while still being light and airy and absolutely Scrumptious. I'm glad that my husband decided to say something about his 1st Monte Cristo or else we would have NOT been able to experience what the hype was all about and I do have to say that it was quite enjoyable. Thank you to the kitchen for acknowledging this mishap and quickly rectifying the situation by remaking the sandwich with a smile on their face. We will definitely come check them out again. We enjoyed our trip here. They have about 45 beers on tap and another 20 or so in bottles. I'd love a cocktail, but beggars can't be choosers. The service was very friendly! The kid got Alfredo pasta, I got a southwest salad (with feta instead of the usual Mexican cheese blend!) and the husband got nachos. None set the world on fire, but all were solid and a fair sight better than Chilis or the like. And, the highlight of the meal, the combo basket appetizer which let you pick three fried items from the choice of cheese sticks, pickles, mushrooms and zucchini. We got the first three and all were fresh and beer battered (as promised). We left just as a band was setting up, so shame on us for missing what looked like a good show. This wasn't earth-shattering but it was a solid dinner and beers on a weekday night. We will probably come back (despite us living on the other side of the river). read more

We were exited to try something different on our side of town. We enjoyed the live music, but the service really let us down. We ordered a single pizza to share, and it took almost an hour to get it. Keep in mind, we didn't see a single pizza at any other table, nor did we see anyone making pizzas. From the time we ordered, one guy finished his drink, another guy came in and took his place, ordered his wings, and ate his entire order before we got our pizza. When the waitress finally brought it, we asked for some ranch. When we had a single slice left, she let us know she forgot and we told her we didn't need it anymore. We went on a Thursday afternoon, the food was tasteless. I felt like I needed to add salt to my pepperoni and green chili pizza. The green chili was Bueno green chili. The husband of the owner came in and said he is her aka &itch, which was inappropriate language to speak to a customer like that. We also ordered the trio, which came with salsa, queso and guacamole. This was disgusting. The cheese was canned cheese, and the salsa looked blackish. We will not be going back to this place due to the owner was very inappropriate and the food was gross. Third time's the charm! This strip mall dive bar was known as The Hopper for several years, both pre-pandemic and under new ownership post-pandemic, and both versions blew. Er, didn't really measure up. They were decent attempts at the ol' beers-pizza-and-honky-tonk thing that don't take much effort (see Spinn's Burger & Beer or Howie's Sports Page), but somehow they failed to execute. We visited precisely three times over five years. And we lived right down the block. Recently the same bones have received a patio re-do and a new coat of paint under new ownership (very friendly people, BTW), now titled Hops & Dough. The place is a major upgrade, so much so that we find ourselves there nearly once a week. My 13 year-old regularly belts Taylor Swift's greatest hits on Karaoke Tuesdays (and sometimes Saturdays). The beer list has been paired down to about 50 pours, which is a good thing, still featuring some solid, harder to find local brews. They could expand the wine list and ultimately it would be great to see cocktails, but no worries, for now I have a nice spot to watch the game on Sundays because... Wangs! And the massive plates of chile cheese fries and nachos (get the small size), very good enchiladas, decent pasta, burgers that should be better... that's about it. But I mean the food is better, service is better, across the board it's better. It's the neighborhood dive bar I've been waiting for. Good job, y'all. read more

I have been here a couple of times now, when I'm on the west side of town. So far the food is really good. The chicken wings are tender. Nice selection of beer. Sometimes they have daily specials. I had ordered the macaroni and cheese, it was good, except the cheese turned into a cold clump. My friend had the posele, she asked where the meat is. Had more broth. Usually have great service. We love this place. We've come for Sunday brunch twice and another time for lunch. It has the typical Westside bar ambiance. It's very clean. Wait staff are so friendly and accommodating. I like the varied menu. You can get New Mexican food. And ours was excellent! We moved to Westside from East Albuquerque. We notice all the bar/taprooms on the Westside serve the same food and a lot of it is not too good. So this place stands out. Two things: Sunday morning, no need for loud music. The menus were all marked up with x-outs and price changes. Just print new menus. But otherwise, we love this place. We recommend Hops and Dough. read more

This is our new favorite place! Everyone should know that Hops and Dough is so much more than pizza and brews. They serve a full menu with something for everyone, great local distilled beverages, and good wine. There is a fun atmosphere and possibly some of the best burgers in town. We love the friendly service and we never feel rushed. The drinks are perfect, brews cold. The nights get even better with entertainment. Maybe we are there on a bad night. I had high hopes. The reviews online were good. Right inside the door we were greeted by a cute little 4 or 5 year old who told us to sit anywhere. I assume the owner's child. Her mom was very attentive to us. She changed the channel on the tv for me. From there it went downhill. The owner left. The waitress seemed to be new to her job. She was confused about the menu. She recommended the pulled pork sandwich and I ordered it. DON'T make the same mistake. Like I said maybe an off night but soggy fries a really gross pulled pork sandwich and very slow service won't bring me back anytime soon. I hope they make some changes.
