We asked the lady behind the register where to find the best blueberry pie, and she started to ask customers who came by who they recommended. They directed us to Moody's Diner. Locals and staff alike are quick to share stories and recommendations, which makes it feel like you're part of the community even if you're just passing through. The store itself is full of surprises. They've got a wood-burning pizza oven (yes, in a general store, how cool is that?), hot lattes, teas, and other comforting drinks, because nothing beats sipping a latte in a Victorian-style shop while digging into a fresh out of the wood burning oven gooey cheesy slice of pizza. Add in their great selection of beer and wine, plus Maine classics like whoopie pies and Moxie soda, and you've got something for everyone. A local gentleman even gave me the full history of Moxie, and that kind of friendliness is exactly what makes this place so special. Outside, you'll find pretty flowers and herbs adding to the charm. She has always told me about how great the store is and how wonderful their products are. From what I can tell from their website, they carry a little bit of everything from seasonal items to household goods and appliances and all types of food items. They carry a large selection of their own brand of specialty foods. In my gift box, I received some of Stonewall Kitchen's Flatbread Crisps, Artichoke Spinach Dip Mix, Roasted Garlic Onion Dip Mix, Sun-Dried Tomato Olive Spread, Holiday Jam, and Maine Maple Champagne Mustard. So far, I have eaten all the Flatbread crisps with some of the Roasted Garlic Onion Dip Mix and with some of the Tomato Olive Spread. They were all delicious. I could have eaten the whole bowl of the Roasted Garlic Onion Dip Mix I prepared. It was so good! I also received a cute dish towel with a map of Maine and 2012 calendar and a great book, "Food Lover's Companion." I am very lucky to have been introduced to the neat things they have at this store. This trip, I flew and was prepared to shop a big order & have it shipped home. When I inquired of the sales person about shipping charges, (a regular employee) I was told that I would have to pay shipping-regardless of what I spent. When I advised the clerk that I always got free shipping(based on the money I spent in the store) he/she advised me that he's only a cashier and that's the rules. I advised him that I could go on-line, get free shipping and not support this store. As I was leaving, I heard derogatory remarks being mumbled from the associate. As a retail executive, I don't know of any retail store that would turn away a large sale over principal do you?

I have no problem paying $15 for a simple sandwich if it's executed well. But little things add up: a tiny bag of chips, a very small pickle portion, minimal meat, minimal kraut, minimal sauce. It felt like every possible quarter was being shaved off the plate. I understand how difficult it is to make money in restaurants right now, but at some point the guest notices. I ordered the hot Reuben. It really wasn't hot, the bread wasn't crisp, the cheese wasn't properly melted, and the meat quality was fairly lackluster. There simply wasn't much meat, kraut, or sauce to make it feel like a satisfying Reuben. My wife ordered the chicken, artichoke and pesto sandwich. Again, the execution was the issue. The pesto wasn't spread evenly from edge to edge, the cheese wasn't melted, the sandwich wasn't particularly hot, and there were only a couple small pieces of artichoke. That's probably what disappointed me most. These are relatively simple sandwiches, and simple food can be fantastic when the basics are done correctly: crisp the bread, melt the cheese, distribute the condiments evenly, use enough filling, and cut and plate the sandwich with a little care. Those small details make a huge difference. We also had two non-alcoholic beers at $8 each. That isn't outrageous, especially in a tourist area with a view, but $16 for two cans of NA beer still feels like it's pushing the upper end of reasonable. The service was good, the staff was friendly, and the upstairs view was enjoyable. I just wish the same level of care had gone into the sandwiches. I don't write reviews every time I'm disappointed, but after owning a restaurant and responding personally to customer reviews for more than 12 years, I tend to notice these things. Hopefully this is taken as constructive feedback, because the fundamentals here are very fixable.

They asked how I wanted it cooked, which isn't usually something I get asked about salmon, so I said to cook how they normally would. It was probably about medium inside, still tender and not overcooked. The salmon had a strong grill taste but not enough seasoning and the fishy brown part was still attached underneath. The mushroom risotto and carrots were cooked and seasoned well. Overall, there wasn't anything major wrong with the meal, but I felt underwhelmed for the price tag ($36).
