Where do I start? Oh yeah! The Smoked Old Fashion. See picture below. There's NO smoke. $14. Nothing was and the cherries were a Gelatinous expired hot mess. And to add insult to injury, our bartender forgot to add the bitters till after my sip. Pro move. Classic lack of mixology training. Now comes the best part of our evening. Should have listened to the kind old man at the previous stop to avoid this rebranded failed establishment. Our food has arrived tucked neatly in aluminum foil packets. I ordered ribs, kielbasa, Mac & cheese, and baked beans. My wife had brisket, Mac & cheese, and Brussel sprouts. Why did everything come in aluminum foil pouches. We were just told that everything just came off the smoker. Clearly it had NOT. Both of our meals were sooooooooooooooo SALTY that there was not enough water in the restaurant to get back the loss of moisture in our bodies. If I was a hunter, I would have used our meals to bait deer. Perfect little pouches of salt licks. Yes! We brought to the staff's attention. They were kind to take our meals off our bill and give us a gift card to use on our next visit. That was kind of them. But, the gift card has no use, because it has NO monetary value. It's just blank, nothing was loaded on it. The QR code just takes you to calling the restaurant. Classic marketing move. Back to our SALTY meals. They were so salty that I had to pull over to some random home and use their garden hose to get water. Burned my mouth from the hot hose water. I even feel bad for the late evening Trash Pandas. Maybe that's why we saw so many of them dead along the road. They died from dehydration from all of the salty scraps from the restaurant. I was so hopeful. We thought that after the rebrand from being Big Boiler Brewing and its failures they would have learned. Our advice, listen to your elders and NEVER go to the Hop Hog. Drive by. Keep going. I don't frequent the Lowell area often, but I love checking out new to me places, so Nate and I stopped in to Hop Hog before a performance at the Lowell Performing Arts Center recently. The restaurant is located inside a building with other businesses, and there's plenty of street parking as well as a parking lot behind the building. We were seated right away and our server was really helpful. The menu is pretty big, with lots of sandwiches, burgers, pasta, subs, and of course, BBQ, which is what they're known for. They also have a "lightning lunch" menu with $10 options, which I thought was cool. Other deals include wing Wednesday, Tuesday family meal night, and Monday burger night. I wanted to try their BBQ, so I got the "Hop Hog Choice" option, which includes two sides and then whatever meats you want to add. The sides are $9, then each protein is priced out by 6 oz. I got the brisket, pulled pork, mac and cheese, and Brussels sprouts. Nate got the brisket Philly. Our food didn't take long to come out, and the portions were huge. I loved the pulled pork - it was very tender and perfectly smoked, and it went really well with the Carolina BBQ sauce. I liked the big city heat BBQ sauce with the brisket. The Brussels sprouts were delicious, crispy and seasoned well. The mac and cheese was gooey but not super flavorful. It was a ton of food (also came with a cornbread muffin and cucumbers)! I had a bite of Nate's sandwich and it was tasty, but we both agreed we would have liked more cheese. Well, well, well! Here we thought it was just great bbq , but these folks are full of culinary surprises. Had one of the best fish sandwiches of my life. Thick, juicy codfish sandwich made to perfection with the accompaniment of also perfect waffle fries. The question I must ask, is why go to Culver's when for a few bucks north, you can have this?? Ate dinner here tonight with adult kids. It was very busy but we were seated in 10-15 minutes. Ordered reasonably soon after arriving but it took well over 30 minutes get our food and some tables that came in after us received their food 10-15 minutes sooner, not sure what was up. We were not in a particular rush but dinner took 1 1/2 hours +. Food was good with the exception of neat cold Brussels and my wife's pulled pork sandwich was rather dry (the pork itself). My husband and I stopped in to try it out, and we were blown away by the quality of the food! We had great service too, but we sat at the bar. Idk how the waitstaff is, but I did notice a lot of them congregating around the kitchen chatting even though the seating area was pretty full. I would be annoyed at this if I were waiting for service. The drinks (local brews and specialty cocktails) were delicious. We got the olive burger with Brussel sprouts and the brisket Philly with waffle fries. AMAZING. It was ok. I got the cherry smoked chicken, hubby got the 1/2 rack of dry rub ribs. The ribs were ok, over-cooked, but tasted good. They used a lot of liquid smoke in their foods. Baked beans were very over smoked with liquid smoke, along with the sauces. I don't think the meat is even smoked! Mac and cheese was good, cucumber slaw was awesome!! Cole slaw was dry. We ate at this BBQ place on Saturday August 2, 2025. It was very, very good! We had a half order of the burnt ends as an appetizer & they were probably some of the best food I've ever ate. Hubby had pulled pork & it was excellent. I had the chicken strip basket, the chicken strips are homemade, tender & juicy & seasoned perfectly. They do homemade ranch dressing too & it was delicious. One of the beers was flat and after letting her know this she spoke with the manager/ or brewery who came over to our table and helped our friend pick out a different beer that was just perfect. This was our first time at hop hog. The food was really good! I have been craving a pulled pork sandwich and it was delicious. However our waitress Holly had a poor attitude towards us from the start. We ended up switching waitresses and got Kate. She was amazing, and extremely kind about the situation! My wife and I went to Hop hog once before about a year ago. The food was great. We decided to stop in yesterday with my Mother-in-law, daughter and niece.
