The absolute best old fashioned I have ever had.
    Julie E.

The old fashioned is recommended. The food was mediocre. We sat in the patio and it was so loud. I kind of felt the food was overpriced I think steaks ranged from 45-69 dollars with no salads and small sides. Yes the steaks are massive but meh. I tried it probably wouldn't make the trip for the steak but maybe for the old fashioned. They were out of several bourbons my friend asked for I may recommend documenting on the bourbon menu which bourbons are out of stock so the server didn't have to go back and forth to the bartender asking what was available.

The food was great! We had jalapeno poppers, loaded fries for appetizers. Not sure the drink I had but it was good. We got the 16 oz. New York strip with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus. The server was great and refilled our glasses promptly. It's a small quaint place to eat that I never knew about. I googled places to eat near me and it came up. I would definitely recommend to have a meal here.

I had heard about this place a long time ago and had been meaning to bring my bourbon obsessed husband there for one of their Friday night steaks. Our softball game was cancelled and we still had our sitter books so we decided to just head that way and I'm so glad we did. Their bourbon collection is impressive. They have so many rare finds that it's amazing. My husband was a kid in a candy shop. They didn't have Hendricks (my favorite gin) but I settled for the gin they had and ginger beer. It's been around since 1900!! The building as always been named the Alto bar from the very beginning and I love that. It's very small and very hole in the wall. These are characteristics that I love and feel most comfortable with in a bar. Food is typical bar food with a daily special. You have to call and make reservations for the Friday steak day. We both got burgers and split an order of jalapeño poppers. I loooooved the burger. It is literally the best burger I have had in years. I can't wait to go back and have it again. I got the rodeo burger and my husband got the olive burger. The poppers were also perfect. If you like a casual small bar with great burgers and bourbon, you MUST COME HERE.

22 oz draft Bud, Bud Light, Miller Light

A group of 15 of us ate here on a recent Friday night for their steak special. Totally worth the drive from Grand Rapids. The waitress was a bit overwhelmed at first with all of us coming in at once, but she warmed up after a bit. She warned us the food wouldn't all be done at once because of the size of our group, which was fine - the food arrived pretty close together. On Friday's, they do a 16 ounce NY Strip with two sides and garlic bread for $11.95. (They've also got great prices on draft beer!). The steak was very tender and had great flavor. Unfortunately the sides were mashed potatoes (out of a box) and green beans (canned). Fresh sides would have made this meal amazing. Ignore the sides and just eat the steak. This is a local, country place. We asked what they had for beer, our waitress said "Almost anything" but the three beers we asked for, they didn't have. She meant "Almost anyting mass-produced, domestic. Miller, Bud, PBR, etc. But, the 22 oz Bud draft was $3.50. Alto is small, but you'll have to watch for this place. When I was there, they didn't have a sign out front or anything with their name on it.

Many brands were local that I'd never heard of before, and it was fun to experiment and try new things. Their food menu honestly shocked me with how tasty everything was. For a board game bar, I usually expect food to take a back seat or be phoned in, but everything was delicious! I had to try the elote deviled eggs, which was a combo I had never considered but I'm so glad someone did! I also got the truffle mac and cheese and a house salad. Both were excellent! The board game selection was extensive, with old favorites and hidden gems. If I'm ever back in the area, I'll be sure to stop in again!

The indoor/ outdoor space blends together in the warmer months with cool hangout spaces and game areas. This place is truly a work of art. Drink lists abound, but because it was lunchtime we stuck to food. We were not disappointed. Everything was well conceived and delicious. I can't wait to come back and try the bone bread next time, stew and scrumptious sounding salads. Today we had the kids smash burger, Brussels burger with frites and fried haddock and frites with a delicious coleslaw. The best part? Different sauces to choose to dip the fries in. The curry ketchup was the best (special shout out for *actually* cooking the curry into the ketchup) as it did not taste of raw curry. They definitely don't cut corners here. Yes, they have a small parking lot, and don't fret if you have the park on the street like we did, as we were seating promptly and it didn't feel too crowded. Since we were seated at high tops near the bar, the bar tender was our waitress, and she is literally the nicest, good energy, engaging human ever! She also whips up the custom, creative mimosa recipes, kudos to her for her awesomeness! I ordered the Shakshuka, flavorful, delicious, would order again. Even as a non-vegan, it was satisfying and would recommend to everyone. Husband had the 1964 Worlds Fair Waffle, and it was tiny. Not what you envision when you think of Belgian waffles. He also ordered the Belgian Forest Bacon, again VERY small portion, so much so that at the end of the meal, he had to order a side of the Smashed Maple Sausage. Both our drinks (I had the mimosa) were fantastic and worth ordering, loved the glassware! Aside from the small portions of waffle, bacon, and sausage, the cheerful vibes here are contagious, and I'd dine here again in a heartbeat!

Fries and brussels were delicious, but the lobster mac is overrated (bland) and our steaks were mediocre. Both were slightly overcooked (not a dealbreaker, but for $85/each I'd expect better). Add in the fact that they just drown them in butter and salt to hide the poor cooking (somehow, very little sear and barely any grill marks on one of the two steaks). Service was excellent - I'll give it that, but it was a little slow at the end once our meal had concluded to get us packed up / being a check. Atmosphere - it feels upscale, but that's just because of the prices and menu selection / options. Food came out quickly, portions were good for the price. They also validate parking for the lot just behind their building (street parking is tight / limited). Unfortunately, it's unlikely that we'd come back. Good news is, there are lots of other options for special occasions in town so weigh your options before booking here.
