Five star dive bar. Service was good from the get-go, drinks were cold and served with a smile, and the place was comfortable overall. I was visiting Grand Rapids to attend a concert the night before visiting The Derby. I was about to head home back to Dearborn but decided I wanted to stop for a shot and a beer before ending my weekend. I was out and about hitting up thrift shops and saw this bar was nearby. We were immediately welcomed upon taking a seat at the bar. We ordered our drinks and they came up quick. A big football game was about to start, so the place filled up not long after we got there. We were never given a food menu, but we saw an ad for hot dogs on the wall. They also had a bunch of snack food available. We noticed Keno, a pool table and a few gambling entertainment machines. There's a lot more to this space than the initial bar area you see when you walk in. Bathrooms were clean, the bill was cheap and the company was great. I'd definitely stop into The Derby again. read more

Great guys that own it. Always entertaining. Something different. Mixed crowd. Nice local place. Good atmosphere.

This is a local watering hole at it's finest. Low prices, heavy pours and a decent draft beer selection. A somewhat random collection of furniture. Microwaved hot dogs and nacho cheese, bag of Lays Potato Chips. Good stuff. Get yourself a large draft beer as you take in the ambiance. Only reason it isn't five stars is because it is BRIGHT in there. Although, those lights will probably help your late night decision making. They do karaoke once a month, which fills the place. There is a single pool table that is usually occupied on other nights. There is also a TouchTunes jukebox that by BF is currently obsessed with playing songs on, using the mobile app. If you're looking for a solid dive bar bar on the southeast side of GR, look no further. read more

The Derby is the perfect dive bar. Great atmosphere, amazing bar food with limited kitchen space (they don't have deep fryers)--(they DO have the best chili dog and the best chips and cheese on the south side of GR), cheap + stiff drinks. If you are lucky, you'll stumble in on a Saturday PM and have the opportunity to witness (or participate in, if you dare) karaoke at the Derb. What more could you ask for in a dive? read more

This is a great little bar. The tables and chairs don't match but beer comes in a big mug. It always looks closed from the outside but once you find the door it opens up to a welcoming and delightful little place. Well, I suppose that depends on what welcoming and delightful means to you. I have been going here for years and it has rarely failed me. Bring a few friends if going on the weekdays as it can be a bit hit or miss on a decent sized crowd. Derby is an endearing little watering hole north of Alger Heights. It always looks closed from the outside but once you walk in, the place is buzzing with locals. Friendly faces from everyone wether they're serving you a giant stein of beer, making conversation from a couple stools down, or playing one of the bar's slot machines. The fact that the place always smells like smoke and you can watch the bartender microwave your burger behind the bar, makes this joint all the more precious. Plus, there's a pool table and occasional great deals on weeknights like $5 for a burger and beer. read more

One of the best home town bars around Grand Rapids good prices good people great beers! On Thursday nights there's free live music hosted by Denny Middleton. Great atmosphere and he really gets the crowd going. He starts at 7 so make sure to come in early to get a good seat! read more
