The 1 star goes to the staff and the cleanliness of the place and one food item. I'm most disappointed with the shrimp it was super rubbery and felt like it was premade and then heated up. We got the "special" buy one pound get the next pound free so we did shrimp. We got shrimp, sausage, corn, potatoes, and dungeness crab with the special blend in one bag. The hook and reel special blend was honestly pretty gross it was sweet, Smokey and not very buttery or salty at all. The shrimp was good quality--thick, firm, and not soft or soggy like I've had at some other seafood boil spots. My only critique would be the Cajun sauce. Brenda, our server and general manager, was very attentive and made sure our entire group had everything we needed. Hook & Reel has officially been added to our seafood boil rotations in the Sacramento area. We've had the chance to check out Hook N Reel two times with our second time being this past weekend. The first time around we went and it wasn't too busy so our food came out faster than expected but this past weekend it was busy and it took a little longer. So definitely plan ahead for those weekend crowds if coming in with a huge party. The service is also pretty good for the most part and everyone is pretty helpful with everything. The restaurant has plenty of seating and also a full bar available. They have plenty of TVs available throughout the restaurant with a huge screen next to the bar. Might check them out during NFL season to catch some games on the BIG screen. One thing I could suggest is lowering the music volume in the restaurant. It gets pretty loud as is with the crowds and with the music you just can't seem to be able to talk to the people in your group. They have a variety of different flavors available to choose from but we have gone with the blended flavor both times and it's been really good. One thing I wish I knew ,was to ask for the noodles on the side for our boil. That was our mistake for not asking if they came inside or out, so that's good to know for future reference. They also offer a variety of different appetizers and dishes so if you're not into the boil scene theirs other options. Overall it's a pretty good spot to check out. It was not busy when we arrived around 4pm. The staff was attentive and informed us of their Monday specials ($1 dollar oysters). Our waitress came by the table a few times to ensure we were satisfied with our food. However, we were not informed that out waitress shift ended and left until another waitress came by to let us know. As for food, we ordered 24 oysters, half raw and half steamed with garlic sauce, calamari and garlic noodles. We ordered two order of the "reel catch" with 2 snow crab clusters and 2 choices of seafood in which we got shrimp and clams with our order and shrimp and mussles. Corn and potatoes were included with the seafood boil. The seasoned garlic sauce with our order was delicious. Mild option was not spicy. House special sauce was slightly spicy but not enough heat. A couple of things made the overall experience hit-or-miss for me. First, the positives--the flavors and seasoning here are honestly really good. The sauces were bold, garlicky, and packed with Cajun flavor, and the oysters were a highlight for me. Super fresh tasting and easily my favorite part of the meal. Where things fell short was the crawfish. We were told it was live crawfish, but it tasted more like it had been frozen for a while -- the texture was pretty rubbery, and it just didn't feel fresh. It was disappointing because the seasoning itself was great, but the quality of the seafood didn't match. The biggest issue though, was finding a fly in our garlic noodles. After that, we were honestly done eating, which put a damper on the whole experience. Overall, I can see the potential here because the flavors are strong and the menu has some winners, but consistency and freshness need improvement. It tasted like hot sauce and water no beer what so ever. The manager was running around with a microphone making random announcements and taking shots. All servers were going to the bar for shots. When it was time to pay they couldnt remove the drinks that were made incorreclty. We asked for manager and the server brenda came up because the manager was to drunk and the owner known as mr. Lee dissapeared. Brenda then tried to argue with us about removing the drink which she ended up doing. We paid and left no tip for horrible service. Just had dinner here on Friday night. The whole experience was so frustrating due to poor service and poorly trained staff. I ordered the rib eye steak, asked for it to be cooked medium. My friend got a seafood boil. Our food came out in less than 10 minutes, which was surprisingly fast. I cut into my steak right away to check the temp, it was extremely rare. Cut into a different part of steak just to make sure, also rare. When I showed our server she agreed it was rare and took it back to the kitchen. She comes back after talking to the kitchen and tells me the cook said its not rare, its just the marinade that makes it look dark. I'm like, "huh?" Cause that made no sense to me. Still they cooked the same steak another 5-7 minutes before bringing it back. Now it was a perfect medium. It was obvious they just threw the same steak back on the grill, the 2 cuts i made were still visible. All was good till our server came back to check on us, she asked how the steak came out, when I said it was perfect, she continues to insist it was medium well when I sent it back based on what the kitchen told her, several times she made excuses and would not once admit or own up to the mistake despite me showing her the cut piece of steak on my plate. What an unexpected surprise. We stopped in while waiting for my mom to have a procedure finished at Kaiser. It took a few moments to seat us, but that was the only real wait.
