I absolutely love Hong Kong Restaurant. I've been coming here since I was a kid with my parents -- and my parents have been coming since they were kids, too. It's truly generational for our family. This place holds so many memories and such a special place in my heart. It's part of the heart of Corona. The service is always warm and welcoming. The ambiance has that classic charm with old-school booths and beautiful brick architecture -- which makes it even more meaningful to me because my grandpa actually helped put some of that brickwork in when he was alive and working in construction. I came in for dinner tonight and the food was amazing. However, the service was very disappointing. When I placed my order, I originally selected three entrées but decided to cancel one and replace it with a different dish. It took about 40 minutes just to get our drinks and have our order taken, and then another 50 minutes for the food to arrive. I politely asked several times when our food would be coming out. The restaurant was not very busy and there were several open tables, so I wasn't sure what the delay was. After waiting an additional 15 minutes, one dish came out, and a few minutes later the rest of the order arrived. Unfortunately, the server also brought the entrée I had clearly canceled when placing the order. I explained that I had canceled it, but she insisted that my mother had ordered it. I calmly told her that I was the only one who spoke and placed the order--my mother hadn't even asked for anything. She continued insisting that we keep the dish because it was already made. When I politely declined, she pointed at my mother and said she had ordered it. My mother responded that she hadn't even spoken. At that point, the server raised her voice and became aggressive, saying we had ordered it and had to keep it. Her attitude shifted completely from polite to confrontational. We remained calm and did not escalate the situation. Eventually, when she realized we weren't going to argue or cause a scene, she took the dish back and walked away. That reaction was completely uncalled for. Additionally, I observed something else that was concerning. A group of African Americans and Hispanic men came in, and there were about four tables open at the time. They were told they had to wait 40-50 minutes to be seated, while other guests who came in after them were seated right away. From what I witnessed, it felt discriminatory based on how they were dressed. That was very uncomfortable to see. At the end of the day, this is a business. We can't pick and choose who gets service. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect. This is my personal experience and observation. I won't take away from the fact that the food was delicious, but the customer service was awful and the delays were absurd. If a restaurant is busy and the food is this good, there should be enough staff scheduled to provide proper service. Because of the service experience, I will not be returning. read more

Yes, it's Old school Chinese like everyone says: Yes. Does that automatically mean it's good: no Ambiance is real old school. They don't make them the way they used to. Intricate pagoda style artwork with dragons and phoenix. The Sizzling rice soup tasted flavorful. The fried rice was excellent, however everything else we ordered tasted a little too similar, just different proteins. We've been to many old school & new school Chinese restaurants, first time we've tried Moo Goo Gai Pan being on the sweeter side...tasted very similar to the crispy fried Hong Kong noodles + We had 2 other dish that tasted like it. =( Service was good & attentive. After more than several decades of being a customer here, this last visit in July 2025 made me realize that my 2013 review, 3 stars, was in fact unfair. If you wish, Yelp enables you to read the old review, but I have to add some new commentary. First of all, HK Restaurant survived Covid when so many small businesses went belly up. That says something is very right here. The restaurant was old when we moved to Corona in 1980. It looks very much the way it did back then, a small Chinese-red building with red tiled roof and big, bold yellow sign out front, with very little in the way of physical upgrades inside as well. Expect a relatively small, cramped dining room, with 7 (?) booths with the outdated traditional red, tuck and roll upholstery to snuggle into. There is another small dining room in the back, rarely used, I think. Please don't change a thing?! It's historic. The whole vibe is a throwback to mid 20th century Cantonese dining, including the dish of complimentary crisp, chow mein noodles served with a sweet and sour sauce dip swirled with that spicy horseradish-y yellow mustard (that one that instantly clears your nose cavities) they bring for starters. (Gawd, I love that stuff!) It is the same owners to this day, and they always know that we will order one dish, altered for Mr B's tastes. They always get it just right. The mapo tofu. The remainder of our orders vary, but this last visit I realized how special the dry version of Beef Chow Fun actually is. They understand how to create "wok hei", a distinct smokey flavor achieved by stir frying in a well seasoned wok and high heat. It is hard to find these days and very special. The beef is so tender, the flavors so rich, that a couple of our most picky family members who accompanied us this last time found this dish completely irresistable. It was fun watching them enjoy something they would have never ordered themselves. The shrimp dishes here are nicely done. The shrimp are well cleaned, big and fresh, still tender, and very good tasting. They do an excellent job on Walnut Shrimp. I can always expect the best when ordering this. Lots of candied walnuts. So irresistable. And while I am not a big fan of their version of Salt and Pepper Shrimp, it is still decent. I am a traditionalist. This one has no shell and is fried in a thick batter, as compared to shrimp served with head and shell still on, with a dusting of exotic seasonings and cornstarch that I prefer. So I save that order for elsewhere. However, HK's version pleased our family of passionate fried shrimp gobblers. I especially appreciate the chef's attention to not overlooking the shrimp. This time we ordered Sesame Chicken, also a battered dish of nuggets covered with a lightly sweetened sauce and sprinkled generously with sesame seeds. It was also given the family stamp of approval. The final star of the show, and one I have always enthusiastically endorsed, is the war wonton soup. It is a meal in itself, with an abundance of big plump wonton dumplings with one of the best tasting meat fillings you can hope to pop in your mouth. There are several big shrimp, tender pieces of chicken, slices of very delicious twice cooked pork, and vegetables like cabbage, carrots, snow peas, and water chestnut, all incorporated into a sensational chicken broth. One order gives you a very generous bowl of soup that satisfied all 6 of us. I can count on this being one of the best in our region, and very consistent. You get nice, large servings, generous on the meat, always worth the price. I don't know about you, but growing up, no Chinese meal was complete without fortune cookies or almond cookies set on a small tray with your bill. This is one place that gives you both. After a great meal and a good giggle over our individual fortunes, there is little that can please me more than nibbling slowly on that tasty almond cookie, saving that toasted almond on top for the last bite. Ahhh. Thank you Hong Kong Restaurant for all the wonderful foodie memories I get to pass on down to two more generations. You are appreciated! read more

This place is outstanding. It seems to be one of the last standing old school Chinese restaurants out there. This place is a hidden gem. The food is always outstanding, it's always served hot and fresh and the service is extremely friendly. Think back to when you used to get Chinese food to go or you would stop into a Chinese restaurant in the 80s that's this place. Very authentic great tasting food. They have a full selection that will please everybody's pallet. I hope more people start going and finding this place so that it doesn't eventually close down. I think it's been there for 30 or 40 years. You owe yourself a ride out here to try it you'll be glad you did. read more

I have loved this place since I discovered it when I worked in a nearby school district almost ten years ago. The food is exactly like the Cantonese style I enjoyed when I was a kid and going with my family to our favorite Chinese restaurant in Monrovia. It's the bean sprouts instead of noodles in the chow mein. It's the sticky sweet bbq spareribs. It's the old school giant egg rolls and well battered shrimp. It's that you can get a single serving combo dinner of these delicious items along with egg drop soup, bbq pork fried rice and delectable sweet and sour pork! My partner and I both had the combo for lunch with enough left over for dinner. I already can't wait to go again! read more

The staff seemed friendly but the service wasn't meh. Food was not good for a sit down restaurant. Out of the three dishes the walnut shrimp was good. Beef broccoli and ginger chicken was not. It was edible but lacked flavor. The egg roll was mushy and lacked flavor. The egg soup broth was what seeme, just water and eggs. The inside was as old as it looked outside. It was clean but very outdated and uninviting. They need to redo the restaurant. Food needs more flavor, and it would ve nice to get water without having to ask for it after we get the food. So my husband and I finally got to go by what used to be one of our favorite Chinese Restaurants; that was until yesterday. It's been a while since we've been able to go there or order from there which we have done very frequently in the past years but we decided to go there early yesterday after church. The restaurant opened at 11:30 and we were there by 11:45 and to say the least; we were the only ones there for about 45 mins. We started off by ordering some hot tea which was very welcoming. We then ordered the bbq spareribs, pork fried rice (with bean sprouts, snow peas and no eggs) and an order of pepper steak. Now we are not sure if 11:30 is a soft opening time but it took about 30 mins for them to bring out the first dish; the bbq ribs and honestly they tasted as if they had just finished cooking them and quickly brushed the bbq sauce on them unlike the tender; juicy saucy throughout ribs that we have been accustomed to. About 10 mins later they brought our pork fried rice and I don't think I've ever had such yucky fried rice as I did yesterday. The rice was cold, crunchy and gummy if you can imagine. We contacted them to let them know that it was cold and they took it back to heaten it up and brought it back to us with a covered lid to secure the heat; however now we have crunchier and gummy rice. Once the pepper steak was brought out I tried eating the rice with the pepper steak; which by the way was not as gravy as we are used to and minus the mushrooms that usually comes with it. By now I'm sadly just over one of my favorite cuisines and especially Cantonese Chinese Cuisine. We inquired about the mushrooms and first the waitress stated that it didn't come with mushrooms but we asked her for a menu which clearly indicated mushrooms and she then stated that there were some mushrooms but more meat. Forgive me but I just didn't get or see any mushrooms. My thoughts are make it make sense; maybe the regular chef was not in and honestly $70 later; we don't think that we will have to go back. We felt really sad for having to remove one of our favorite restaurants at one of our favorite cuisines. read more

We ate there before and enjoyed it. Arrived at 2:40 PM. Waitress told us we had to order quickly because the kitchen closed at 3 PM, despite there being no note of that on Yelp or in the restaurant. The appetizer was greasy and lukewarm. The egg foo yung was greasy. The Peking beef was good. When we ordered, the waitress told us that they could not prepare a vegetable plate. She didn't appear to be listening to our requests and was in somewhat of a rush. She did not return to the table or offer to fill our waters until she brought the check. We asked to speak to the manager and she said OK and left. 10 minutes later, we went to the kitchen and asked for the manager again. Someone else came out and told us that the manager was not there, and they did not know when they would be back. We attempted to tell them that the food, particularly the appetizer was not good. She said they were very busy today and the next time we come back, they'll make us good food. read more

We have been coming here for many, many years. The food is very good - it always has been. The place has been in need of a makeover for a long time, but it does have a certain nostalgic charm. Last time we ordered take out (we rarely eat in) I noticed they updated their online menu (very nice) and they certainly updated their prices! Yes prices are going up everywhere, but wow, it's getting expensive here! I would consider the portion size to be moderate, possibly shrinking a but, but the food is really good, so we keep coming. The owners are a bit stern (I used to make it a point to get a smile out of the woman - wasn't always successful ) but the gem of the restaurant has always been Michelle! She is so sweet and kind. Whenever one of us goes inside to pick up the food, she always remembers and asks about the other by name! Even after the long absence during COVID, Michelle was still on it! Found this little gem Sunday night and apparently it has been around for 50 years or so. The Chinese food here is a rare treat - especially their chicken egg rolls. We shared the Hong Kong Nest Appetizer ($19.95) that includes egg rolls made from a rare and laborious traditional recipe in which the skin is coated with a double light and crispy batter. The spare ribs were juicy and the paper wrapped chicken flavorful. The bacon wrapped fried shrimp was savory and the cream cheese wontons were delicious. The waitress and staff were all very friendly and the restaurant decor is nostalgic of Chinese restaurants before the days of Panda Express. It all adds to the charm of the entire experience. I will be back to try their pork chow mein and the egg foo young in the future. Note that they do have lunch specials and combination dinners as well. The main criticism I have is how far it is from where I live and don't understand why this place only has a 3.7 star on Yelp. (In addition, I probably wouldn't recommend the teriyaki chicken because it is generally a Japanese cuisine and was criticized by a Yelp review.) read more

So prob stopped by here for the final time today. Frustrating when you walk in and not greeted for nearly 10 min because there's 1 server and she is hanging out in the kitchen awaiting food. I got the teriyaki chicken today. Not a good move. First off, the lunch comes with soup but you can't choose it. You get the egg drop. My egg roll was not hot. The chicken was all dark meat and it came with a small serving of teriyaki sauce to dip the chicken in. Chicken was warm, not hot. In listening to conversations around me the other patrons seemed to be regulars. I work in the area once a month and have came here for the past 5. Just not a good experience today. read more
