I've been craving donuts so I decided to stop by this local shop before dropping off my boyfriend to the ferry. It looked like a normal older donut shop layout format. They sell lotto! I wanted something big and to test out there dough fluff but also a simpler option. They will charge you $0.50 cents if you want to use card under $5 purchase. I found this out cause the counter guy automatically charged me and I questioned it. The dough or chocolate glaze was nothing special. In fact, the dough tasted almost not fresh as in donuts they made this morning but not as bad as grocery store bought donuts. I just don't think I'll be back to give it another shot.

Look at that freshness! That fritter is flawless. It's what all fritters should strive to be.

I've lived in Alameda nearly two years and only just tried Hometown Donuts, mostly because they are both out of the way and only open til 3pm. :( But oh- look at these! They're so fresh! I purchased 8 donuts. The nice lady behind the counter threw in two more and went, "sssh!". They were perfect. I love that they don't try to do a weird, undersized, undercooked, overpriced version of an apple fritter like a lot of these new places try to do. ( They DID have an extra small fritter next to the regular sized version.) Hometown Donuts knows an apple fritter is an apple fritter, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

My husband and I have lived on the west end of Alameda for almost 32 years. We are still in the neighborhood. Finally, yesterday was my first check-in at Hometown Donuts. Beats me why I have never stopped in at this donut shop all these years. The only slight disappointment I have is they don't sell French cruller, which is my favorite donut. I bought my husband an apple fritter. It was loaded with apples and he said it was cinnamonly good. Their ham 'n cheese croissant was filling and I almost could not finish it. I ordered these items yesterday. This morning I returned for another apple fritter, two blueberry cake donuts and a dozen donut holes. I usually don't eat cake donuts, but my glucose level has been under 110 for about a week. The blueberry donut was a treat. I only ate half of it. Besides it has been over 10 years since I had one of these blueberry donuts. It was yummy and fresh. Return visits? Yes, but not everyday. I like their variety of donuts in the display cases and the assortment of beverages they have in the refrigerator. I still have yet to see if they have hazelnut coffee. Definitely a good place to stop in, get a "morning jo" and donut or croissant.

Crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle.

Open daily 6 am to 2 pm during COVID-19, but closed on Sunday! Ever have a donut craving? Love soft donut holes and slightly crunchy apple fritters where you can see the apple pieces? Well due to the shelter in place, I've limited my walks to places where not many will walk. My route brings me by Hometown Donuts and can I just say, I may have a new favorite donut shop! I'm trying to do my part in supporting local businesses so I decided to stop in this morning to give them my business. I walked in and Henry greeted me by asking how I was doing and we chatted a little while I tried to make the difficult decision of if I wanted the apple fritter or a maple bar. I ended up buying the large apple fritter ($2.50 but it's the size of my hand) and a dozen donut holes ($2.75/doz). I definitely didn't need all this sugar but it's for a good cause. I chatted with Henry about how business was going and they're staying open just to break even. They aren't serving lunch in case they don't get enough customers to purchase things before they go bad. He says he gets about 10 calls a day asking if they're open so I felt the need to report back to Yelpers that they are indeed open! Please go and support them! On to the donuts. Oh my goodness. I started off with a couple donut holes before and at the start of my first Zoom meeting and they were so light and airy and perfectly glazed without being too sweet! At $2.75 a dozen, it's an extremely good deal since these donut holes are pretty big...and you're getting a dozen of them. Before I could write this review, I said I'd try a small piece of the huge apple fritter. Well, one piece has turned into a fourth and I'm still eyeing it. The outside is crunchy with the right amount of glaze. You can see the apple pieces. The inside isn't too dense like other places or too sweet like apple pie filling. I can see why this is a fan favorite. I'll definitely be back, though I'd better watch how often given my limited exercise. They have a small lot in the front that they share with two other businesses that are closed during the day. I think you can also park in the back lot as well.

Whenever I think about having a delicious cheeseburger-- my mind drifts back to memories of this place. We sat here for a quick bite, but got distracted by the aroma of burgers cooking. We had no choice. Made to order, and very different from assembly line style burgers. Delicious old fashioned homemade Cheeseburgers! Oh yeah, I almost forgot; typically, I stop here to eat fresh donuts. Fine variety (to match my moody attitude about donuts: maybe I want glazed, or something filled, or round like a ball, or twisted, or swirling; or speckled; or with names of animal anatomy; or extra sugar on top; or with fruit baked right in, or...), I think I need another Hometown Donut doughnut now. A small parking lot is near the front door. And a larger parking lot is in back, near the back doorway entrance. Play Lotto too

Amazing donuts and good customer service! The lady at the counter was so nice and friendly. She gave me donuts and wished me a Happy New Year. Her kindness meant a lot to me. The donuts are unbelievably tasty and soft. Excellent quality! I am visiting family here since I am from out of town and I haven't had good donuts like these in many years. You won't be disappointed!

    Mmmm...apple fritter

5 stars for the apple fritter! Crunchy, chewy, apple and cinnamon goodness! Donut place is located in an older strip mall off Ralph Apezzato way near College of Alameda...place is popular for the donuts, with burger options, lottery tickets, candy and chips. I'd definitely come back just for the apple fritter...stopped by after lunch 2 doors down (yummy thai place) since wanted something sweet for later. Donut options (around 1pm) were slim pickings. I usually gauge a donut place off the most basic, yet yummy glazed donut but they were completely out...even the donut holes so I had to 'settle' for 1 of 3 fritters left in the display case. Darn! Older gentleman ultra friendly and welcoming. Will return soon!

    My assortment missing two.

Personally, I choose the Brunch-urrito and let me say it was filling and satisfying. The service was amazing as they were attentive to our needs as gave us a complimentary, freshly made, glazed donut, and that hit the spot with the coffees we had. The location is a little hidden and small, however, it small and welcoming to all. They even have an area in the back that has a wide selection of old fashion donuts. Got to try the duo eggs benedict - it has one with hollandaise sauce and another with gravy, with a side of hash browns. I liked the hollandaise sauce more than the gravy, which was a bit thick and could have more flavor. The hash browns were crispy. Nothing crazy about the dish but it was prepared well - the combo of poached egg, Canadian bacon, and avocado hit the spot. We got donuts on the way out as well - donut holes, raised glazed, twist, maple bacon, and filled donuts (they fill it to order). The donuts were fluffy, soft, and not overly sweet/oily. Would highly recommend! They gave us a cinammon roll to try as well which was very kind of them, and it was one of the favorites we tried.

Usually there's a small line out the door and that has remained unchanged for this visit as well. They have a small space and tables for small parties both inside the cafe and along their front sidewalk. Their menu selection is wide, offering a variety of lattes, coffees, and teas, but also both pastries and small meals as well. It's no wonder why they're always popping around this time of day. Although I haven't tried many of their drinks, I can say that their matcha latte has been consistently good. Today I ordered one with almond milk and the matcha flavor is nicely balanced. Good ratio between matcha and milk. The matcha itself tastes pretty well rounded - not bitter, but also not too subtle in flavor. I probably got the matcha here like three times and it has not failed me yet. My partner really enjoys the Malasada but they can sell out pretty quickly. Previously I've tried their Ube Crinkle and their donuts and they were pretty good as well. This time, I wanted something a little less sweet and small so I tried the Bibingka which was great! I love mochi and the Bibingka had a mochi texture to it. It comes with some pineapple bits which I tend to avoid, but my desire to try something new overrode that today and thankfully, the bits were small. It's a dense little bite, but I enjoyed it! A perfect little bike treat. I don't get much interaction here with the workers since it's such a quick stop, but it's okay. I think depending on what time you go, it just gets really busy and employees are just trying to chug out the orders. We'll be back again for those delicious drinks and pastries though!

I haven't had a donut since childhood and polled on Facebook since the classic Rudy's is now closed. About 50 people strongly recommended colonial which is why I picked it. We came here at 10am on a Thursday. Service was quick and no line. There were a great many donuts to pick from. We ordered a filled maple bar, glazed raspberry jelly filled, and a buttermilk glazed. One thing we noticed is that the filled donuts are filled very generously. I've never had a jelly donut filled all the way through before. It was filled to bursting. The jelly isn't too sweet either. The maple bar was advertised to be filled with maple filling but had a vanilla custard instead. It was pretty good. It's filled from both ends generously. Probably about a half inch of the middle has no filling. So it's easy to split in two. The maple glaze on the maple bar was not very maple-flavored. It was too subtle for my tastes. The maple bar and jelly donut were both quite light and fluffy. The buttermilk donut was on the dry side, but the glaze is good. Not too sweet.
