I hadn't heard about this place until a few hours before going for date night. It's very unassuming. While it is definitely a bar with typical bar vibes, it's not quite as loud. The staff was very friendly and the service was fast. The pineapple upside down cake shooter was so delicious. Their prices are very reasonable too! There were a few downsides unfortunately which is the only reason I gave 3 stars. To start, it was ungodly hot in there. It felt as if there was no AC whatsoever. We were sitting upstairs and I was able to open a window at our table which helped a lot but it was unbearable. Second, while the flavors of the food were in point, the Mac and cheese on mine was ice cold and I didn't find a trace of bbq sauce on there. It wasn't a deal breaker as I had leftovers and will reheat but was disappointing. Lastly, while I understand it's a bar, the writings and genitalia drawings everywhere (and I do mean everywhere including the tables and inside the lampshades at the tables) was over the top. I get that that is the vibe for bars, however it's quite distracting and honestly just felt quite immature. Would I come back here? Possibly. I wouldn't write this place off completely because the food and service overall was good, but it's not one of my top choices to come back to. read more

Had heard whispers of this place - and walked by it 1000x without knowing which restaurant it actually was. Very unassuming on the outside, grungy and divey on the inside - and the upstairs area was nice and secluded from the regular crowd to where I felt I could enjoy the best of both worlds i.e. have space to make it into a cute date night while also still immersing ourselves into the divey-ness. Everything about this place screams "hometown dependability" - their menu is nothing crazy special or unique, but the few things they do make they do REALLY WELL. Mac and Me + Chesapeake were two outstanding finds on this menu - the goldfish swimming in the tomato soup were a nice little touch as well :) Excited to come back here when in search for an affordable + less populous spot with some good eats. read more

I saw so many good reviews, I was so confused and disappointed. I couldn't fully finish my meal because it wasn't appetizing past my initial hunger. The brisket in my brisket sandwich was dry and not at all tender. There were no juices in the sandwich. Even the veggies in the slaw were dried out. I desperately needed some bbq and there was none in sight. The fries were also dried. Everything tasted air fried or something. I didn't enjoy it. I did like the cut and flavor of the fries. So I got home sweet home takeout via Uber eats the other day and it was so good! They have so many grilled cheese options and it's very much like a comfort food vibe. Definitely great on a cold , rainy day. We got the pretzel bites which were my favorite appetizer. They were doughy and not too fried. We also got the pimento cheese app. The pimento cheese comes with pita. It's really good but it's not my favorite homemade pimento cheese. Pretty standard. I loved my sandwich - it had hummus, Gouda cheese, and spinach! But it was still a grilled cheese so it was perfect for a rainy day to pair with the homemade tomato soup. It's vegetarian which I appreciate. I liked that there were cheese pieces in it that melt and it comes with little gold fish to go on top. Such a cute touch. Hidden gem - found this place one late night after catching a show at the Altria theater. Best grilled cheese sandwich I've had in a loooong time. The fries were perfectly seasoned. Okay wow I LOVE this place. Gluten free bread is an option for any of the speciality grilled cheese (or you can build your own), so that's an immediate win for me. This is one of my favorite hidden gems in Richmond. Their BBQ used in the grilled cheeses are phenomenal. Not pictured are the tater tots I got recently, which were also great. I was given a zesty aioli sauce to pair them with, definitely recommend. The pricing is great, especially the drinks! I cannot stress that enough, and their happy hour goes all the way until 8pm. The ambiance is super chill, everyone here is incredibly nice, and the cheddar cheese grits are sooooo good. They serve Montana Gold bread, which I've really missed. On the left is the Sebastian Benedict. It was a delicious combination of poached eggs served on top of a perfectly seasoned Maryland style crab cake on an English muffin, served with an amazing Hollandaise sauce and a side of crispy rosemary seasoned potatoes. The combination of flavor and texture was culinary perfection. I can't recommend this place enough. They're running a BOGO special right now, so I ordered it to try the restaurant. I'm really glad I did! I got the "mac and me" and it was really good! The grilled cheese was toasted perfectly! The bbq was a little sweet with a little heat, which was great! Tomato soup was tart and just right, (although only about a 1/4 cup of soup if that much!), but not a terrible deal for $10 on Postmates, probably less in store or ordering directly. Home sweet home specializes in various grilled cheeses. I finally made it in to sample one of them. I had the upstate which comprised of bacon, sharp cheddar, GREEN APPLES, and maple syrup! WHAT. THE?! It was so good! The crispy and sweet crunch from the apple, the saltiness of the bacon, the sweet warm taste of the maple syrup? On top of that, it's served with the best tomato soup I've had in Richmond. If you don't try this place, you're making a HUGE mistake! Highly recommend! After weeks of my wife gently reminding me that the romance in our relationship has died since the wedding and that I am long overdue to take her out on a date I finally decided to visit Home Sweet Home with her in tow. Walking in, I was not disappointed to see TVs everywhere showing the caps game. They were positioned perfectly so I could pretend to look lovingly into her eyes while in actuality gazing past her staring at the red of the Capitals jerseys. There was plenty of seating both upstairs and down and we had a lovely cafe table, close to the bar which was ideal so there was as little lag time as possible between my order and the alcohol coming. While I was slightly disappointed in their beer offerings, I was happy to see that they had a cheap shot and beer combo which would be perfect for a date night. The menu was good and moderately priced. We started out with some pimento cheese which was surrounded by flatbread. It was very tasty. I then got the Mac and Me grilled cheese which was out of this world. My wife is vegetarian and was disappointed to see that the tomato soup that is served with the grilled cheese was made with chicken stock and she could not eat it. She got some sort of sandwich but it didn't have meat on it so I stopped paying attention. She said she liked it though. The WTF was great! I'm not a grilled cheese person but I liked this place. The brisket and onions made a great combination and the sandwich was toasted nicely. Tasted like a fancy homemade sandwich. One of the BEST decisions I've made for a local lunch spot. It's located in Carytown close to Nacho Mamma's. I don't know how long they've been open, but I'm sad that I didn't find out about them until last week! The place was very neat and there is an upstairs location as well. My friend and I decided to sit at the bar and have our first order of these "amazing" grilled cheese. I ended up ordering the Chesapeake grilled cheese and their side of tomato soup. Neither of us ordered a drink because it was a lunch date during the work hours, but I am very intrigued with their Jameson and Pickle juice (DEF trying it here when I'm roaming around Carytown). I read other reviews that their sandwiches were just okay or salty, but the Chesapeake that I ordered was neither of those. The Chesapeake consist of "crab dip, spinach, and sharp cheddar on white". It was SOOOOOO good. And the side of tomato soup (with a goldfish) was an awesome addition to include to the meal. After a dreary evening, first-time trip to Home Sweet Home, I have mixed feelings about it. I had been wanting to check out this place for a while and I so wanted to love it. Once inside, I did love the look and feel of the space, but for the money, $9 for a grilled cheese and a more pasty-than-soupy small ramekin of "tomato soup", I kinda get why we mostly saw ice hockey fans drinking at the bar during happy hour. The grilled cheese was good, but didn't have a wow factor I was wishing for. I loved my $4 Buskey Cider more than my sandwich. That being said, the food presentation was nice, the grilled cheese looked amazing, like how I would make one at home, dark, crispy, but lacking that salted butter flavor. If on a budget and considering value, there are better restaurants with more substantial sandwiches on the menu for the same price or less. I can't remember the last time a drink was so cheap. It's not cheap to drink anymore. Screw the need for gas prices to go down. I'm talking about the need for drink prices to go down:The Movement. (But hey, maybe expensive drinks keep drunkards off the streetz.) In any event, I ordered one of their grilled cheese sandwiches and salads to go, and Yelp...they had pretty good flavors and combinations of ingredients, but both were WAYYYYY too SALTY. I didn't finish either because I didn't want a stroke. Sometimes the saltiness of a dish can ruin everything, and that's kinda what happened here. Maybe they should've held back on the blue cheese in both??? I don't know. But my friend had her baby, so I'll be returning to Richmond soon to visit this place, no doubt. My flu-stricken husband and I ordered takeout from here for lunch today. He wanted soup and grilled cheese and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity for us to try Home Sweet Home because I ordinarily wouldn't eat something that heavy for lunch. All of the sandwiches on the menu sounded good, but I ended up with a Build Your Own grilled cheddar cheese on wheat bread (keepin' it casual) and he ordered The Uptown which had apples and bacon and was served with maple syrup. Both sandwiches came with their chicken stock based tomato soup. When I brought the sandwiches home, we couldn't wait to devour. What I found was that they were just ok. I knew going into it that takeout for grilled cheese was risky. That's something you gotta eat hot off the grill while the cheese is still gooey. Ours had cooled down a bit during the 10 minute drive home, so neither sandwich lived up to its full potential. We were also taken aback by the small tomato soup serving (although it was delicious!). The lone goldfish waiting for us in our takeout boxes was super cute. Overall, I'll give Home Sweet Home another chance when I can dine in and eat my sammich while the cheese is still nice and melty. Anyone who knows me will know I LOVE a grilled cheese sandwich. I especially love an artisan grilled cheese sandwich. Its basically my favorite food. We now have Home Sweet Home, a brick and mortar restaurant in Carytown that essentially focuses on grilled cheese sandwiches, and more. I stopped by recently for brunch, but ended up sticking to the GC menu. I had the WTF, because honestly everything on it was calling my name. It was great; the brisket had a little more fat that I would have liked, but its brisket, so not surprising. They also left the plastic ring on the cheese slices before melting it. At first I thought it was just me and this was supposed to be the rind on some fresh fontina or something, but I honestly do not think it was edible and so I spent the time to peel it off. Other than that, the sandwich was delish. It came with a tiny side of tomato soup with a floating goldfish, super cute. Others at the table upgraded to fries or the brussel sprouts, which I don't overly recommend unless you love them pickled. (Speaking of pickles, we started with the Fried Pickles and the Crab Dip for apps, both very good) Overall experience was fine; nothing over-the-top grand but definitely nothing bad. It did seem a little slow in service despite there not being a ton of people, but we weren't in any hurry to go anywhere, so we didn't need to complain every 5 minutes like the table near us. Who doesn't love grilled cheese? I'll wait... One of my good friends introduced me to this gem for dinner one night and I've gone back alone multiple times simply for the Mac & Me. I can get a sandwich with tots and a drink for about $10-12. I always say, I'll try something different when i come here but it's so hard to break away from my tried & true.
