After we had seen this several times in passing through Helena and trying their to go plates a couple times, we tried the take home selection. The first time we tried Baked Spaghetti, Rotel Chicken Spaghetti, and a side dish of Squash Casserole. Of the three, the Rotel Chicken Spaghetti was the biggest hit. The XS small sizes state they serve 2-3, but we got 4-6 servings out of both entrees. Turned out that even the XS was a lot of squash casserole, so unless you have a larger family or really like it, the 2-cup serving may be a better size. We recently ordered again and this time got a Classic Lasagna, Beef Stroganoff, and Beef Tips and Rice. Again, we can get more servings than the suggested, but I'd rather have too much than not enough. We also picked up a tray of Banana Pudding and a Peanut Butter Pie. Hard to beat the classic banana pudding. The Peanut Butter pie might be better described as Peanut Butter Cup Pie since it's got the chocolate peanut butter cups instead of just a smooth peanut butter only pie. Overall, Home Plate Cooking is a great addition for when you want a home cooked type meal but don't want to be the one doing the cooking. Dishes all come labeled with cooking directions and a use by/freeze by date. Great alternative to other takeout in the area. And because they use classic make-at-home style recipes, you don't even feel like it's take out; more like a casserole or dish that mom made and froze ahead. Add some rolls and a fresh salad (which Homeplate also offers if you don't want to make those either) and you have a great meal! I am really loving Home Plate. This place has both eat in and carry out. They serve lunch and then have multiple options of take and bake meals in varying sizes. I have found that the xs size is enough for me, my husband, and teenager. None of us are big eaters so we usually even have leftovers. However, my husband really loved the chicken and dumplings so next time I will get that in a bigger size so that we have plenty of leftovers. So far we've had the chicken and dumplings, poppy seed chicken, smothered pork chops, and chicken spaghetti. We really liked all of them. They also have plenty of side dishes and desserts. We also tried the strawberry pretzel salad and the cake balls. All were really good. You can order in advance or you can just head on in and see what they have. If you know you want something in a specific size, you can call a day or two before and they will prepare it for you! It would be nice to stop in for lunch one day. Tried Home Plate cooking for the first time since moving to Helena. We stopped by to get the daily special, chicken and dressing with Lima beans and sweet potato casserole. Dressing was a traditional cornbread dressing like grandma used to make with large chunks of white chicken throughout. Lima beans were nicely seasoned and fresh. Sweet potato casserole was hot and sweet with candied pecans on top. Daily special was great, but what impressed me was the large variety of home cooked "take and bake meals". Will give the "take and bake" a try in the future. read more

I won't be back. I purchased 3 casseroles from there and they were not good. The bacon, chicken ranch had too much dry mustard til that was all we could taste. The chicken and dressing and chicken enchiladas were the consistency of paste. Not sure if they use a food processor on the chicken or some institutional product but it was like sawdust in both meals. Very disappointed. read more

This place isn't anything special it's mainly suited for people with busy lifestyles who do not mind bland tasting food.

Much much better than your average meat and 2! I drive a long way to pick up several specials once a week. Overall I would say that the entrees are a little better than the sides. Beef tips and rice as well as pot roast were awesome! Desserts are spectacular. Service is great. You can get plates refrigerated or hot during lunch. Has been awesome during this pandemic. Home plate cooking offers homemade from scratch preprepared heat and serve meals, catering, baked goods and deserts. By and large I'm generally not a huge fan of casseroles; however, I've never had a bad experience with what we've gotten from Home Plate over the years. My wife and son love their chicken salad. Last night wife wanted chicken salad and pimento cheese / appetizer dinner. They were out of pimento cheese, but they had a "cheese ball". She asked to see it and when they showed it to my wife she laughed. What they were offering as a cheese ball is a mound of pimento cheese covered in bacon the size of my 11 yr olds head! She purchased it without hesitation and after dinner we had several lbs of bacon covered cheese ball remaining. It was very good pimento cheese and bacon makes everything better so how could you go wrong. In the past we've had a variety of dishes and she's had a number of catered lunch provided by Home Plate Cooking. I would recommend if you're looking for a sit down family style meal without having to cook it. Serving sizes range from extra small which serves 2-3 to party size which feeds roughly 25. For my family a small is more than enough for a meal and provides a decent amount of leftovers. We've had friends provide us a family size meal for a loss or something of the sort in the past and I'm relatively certain we could have fed 10 people with what we received. Extra small dishes run in the $12.00 range. I don't know that I could purchase the ingredients to make chicken and dumplings to serve 2-4 people for $12.00, not to mention the time savings. These meals are mostly casseroles with a number of sides and they say from scratch, but cream of mushroom and ritz crackers make their way into a number of the offerings, so the use of from scratch is a bit generous. It's not a fancy destination dining experience, but if you want this type of meal served family style quick and inexpensively this is the way to go. Beats fast food in my book any day of the week. I can't feed my family of 4 in a fast food restaurant for $12.00. read more

I have eaten at Home Plate for 2-3 years. I believe it has gone downhill. The green beans are mush, the chicken and dressing has little chicken in it, and everything tastes the same to me. Desserts are still good. Great concept but implementation is lacking. read more
