Pint of Kilwins cookie dough ice cream, and the bag it came home in
    Clarissa W.

My husband went to eat with several church members at a restaurant in the area. Before they left, they walked to Kilwins to get some ice cream to go. He brought home a pint for us to have over Memorial Day weekend. He said the place had charm and was nice and clean. I have not been so I am unsure of its exact location, but I do know it is in the same area as Big Whiskey's (Highway 150 and Stadium Trace). I will say that the Cookie Dough ice cream that he brought home was DELICIOUS! Usually with cookie dough ice cream, depending on what brand you get, the texture of the ice cream can sometimes be underwhelming. However, Kilwins Cookie Dough ice cream was super creamy and full of flavor. We have enjoyed this ice cream SO much over the past three days, and I know my exercise level will need to increase now that I know this place is close by. We definitely recommend you going to Kilwins and trying their various ice cream flavors. You will not regret it.

Loving this cute box with my chocolate caramel bite.

This would be a great place to treat your grade schooler after a good report card, and even better one to stock your "candy bar" table for your next event. Sugar also rotates their seasonally themed offerings. They carry every color jelly bean, gummy, and M & M imaginable. I love to put a smaller clear glass cylinder inside a larger one- fill the space with some of the above- choosing colors based on occasion-and then put water and flowers (like gerber daisies) in the inner one. Grouping several of different heights together in various colors makes a festive centerpeice. I also discovered an abundance of the kiddo coveted Sour Belts. Which- for a Pintrest addict means- edible bow making material! Lastly, the owner is also the operator, stock girl, and cashier. Which makes for a very clean, very well run, very service oriented, very friendly, atmosphere.

Peterbrooke Chocolatier Birmingham - Goody bag from their grand opening, thanks Peterbrooke!!

First of all....I am sorry, Madi!! The many pictures I took today at the grand opening all…read moredisappeared after my phone glitched, including the very cute one of you! I will update this review with an even cuter photo of you on my next visit, promise! Okay....now that's out of the way lol. I saw on Facebook that Peterbrooke Chocolatier is having their grand opening today, so I had to go check it out. Boy, am I glad I did! They had samples galore due to the grand opening and I got to try several of their yummy selections, including chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate covered pineapple, chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate covered rice krispie treats, etc. While they will not have the same variety of samples on the future outside of the grand opening event, I was told that they will always have a plate of samples out close to the register! They have milk chocolate and dark chocolate for sure....and I am sure white chocolate but I didn't pay attention to that since I am not a white chocolate kind of gal. I can honestly say their milk chocolate is quality stuff. You can definitely tell the difference, no cheap imitation here! Also, they have gelato available in the store.....I want to say at least 10 flavors? I forgot to get an exact count, but they look delicious. Also, and this is a big one for me, they have chocolate caramel green apples. Yes, they do! So there is only one other store in Birmingham that I know of with chocolate caramel apples....but it's no good as the chocolate the other store uses is just not up to par and leaves a funny taste. I eat a lot of chocolate caramel apples and currently I mail-order them as I expect them to be of certain quality. However, I am really excited to try Peterbrooke's chocolate caramel apple next time I make my way there as I already know they have quality chocolate from the samples today! It would be fantastic if I can find a local store with awesome chocolate caramel apples! Anyway, so the fact that my phone glitched and I have no good photos for Yelp other than the one I "borrowed" from their Facebook page and the one I took after I got home of the goody bag they gave out at their grand opening today is the perfect excuse to go back and visit them again....very soon! Oh, wait, almost forgot! In regard to their service? Their employees were super nice! I already mentioned Madi. She was personable and friendly when I met her today and she talked to me about their gelatos and chocolate caramel apples. Nice employees always make any store even more of a pleasure to visit! Thanks, Madi!!

After searching through several Chocolatier's in the Birmingham area looking for family a gift card…read moreso they could have fun choosing their own chocolates, I decided to use Peterbrooke as they had an online e-Gift Card option, where the other shops did not offer this. I decided to call the local store to confirm they would accept the GC and the sweetest lady went above & beyond to help me place an order through the store's register. She sent me a screen shot for confirmation and mailed the GC that day, to family. They were so surprised & pleased! Apparently the online e-Gift Cards can only be used for ONLINE purchases. So keep that in mind.

The year-end holidays are upon us. It's too early to have visions of sugar plums dancing in our…read moreheads but it's just the time to have visions of smoked ham, turkey, green beans and other delicious foods playing with our salivary glands. There's always been an age-old debate of whether to serve cornbread dressing or stuffing. In the South it's cornbread dressing hands down all day long. That doesn't mean that all cornbread dressings are the same. You have: chicken pieces or not, sage or not, diced boiled eggs or not, soupy or dry, add some white bread or not, write your recipe out or just "eyeball" it. Of course, there is a certain rule to be followed religiously and that is to never use sweet cornbread. Then again, true Southerners would never cook sweet cornbread. With such a variation in the quality of dried sage in the stores some dressing batches use half a container of sage and some batches only require a heaping spoonful. There is a source for quality cornbread dressing seasoning that can be mailed to your home all year long. Suzy Purvis is a lady from Alabama and she knows her cornbread dressing. Actually, that's what she is known for and has won awards for it many times. Her family operates a spice business and are well-known for their breakfast sausage seasonings. I first learned of Mrs. Purvis through an on-air interview on a local radio talk show. Then I noticed the spice company name associated with the local meat market where I was buying my bulk breakfast sausage. The Spice Connection is a reliable source for consistency and high quality sage that is used in her cornbread dressing formula. There is a site that is dedicated to just the dressing packets www.https://www.dressingturkeys.com and there are recipes and hints to help you make successful dressing https://www.dressingturkeys.com/recipes I'm from the old school of "eye balling" and never writing down my measurements. But, there started to be an inconsistency to my batches mainly from the sage I was buying. I thought I would try the seasoning packet when I heard Mrs. Purvis on the radio. My first attempt at using her spice packet resulted in the best dressing I had made in a few years. Mrs. Purvis is the nicest person to correspond with through email. I had questions on how thin she makes her dressing before cooking it and she responded promptly and we carried on a nice conversation for a couple of days just talking about how the holidays used to be when the grandparents were alive and cooking. The only thing I have to say about the seasoning packet is to be sure and NOT add salt to anything you will add to the dressing mix before cooking. This especially includes the broth you use. The seasoning is more than just sage and it is pretty salty and if you add salt at every stage of prep like most cooks do the end result will probably be inedible due to over salting. Wait and add additional salt when you taste the mix before you add your raw eggs (if you add them).
