Recently a company connected with Dominion contacted my husband and me to offer a home energy review and estimate on weatherizing our house in time to take advantage of the tax credits available until the end of the year. Since we did not know enough to evaluate the proposal he provided after his review, we talked with someone we knew who was volunteering with a climate advocacy group in this area. He suggested we contact Mohammed at Home Energy Solutions for an energy audit. We did so and were able to schedule it very quickly with Mohammed spending a great deal of time doing a thorough inspection of our three attics and our many windows and doors. We were surprised at just how bad the situation was in general air leakage, in the ductwork, and in the insulation over one part of our house where, from the pictures Mohammed took, it looked like a raccoon had gotten into the attic and torn up the insulation. When Mohammed sent us a contract to fully insulate our three attics, removing the insulation in parts, sealing the edges and around lights, and more, and we had a ton of questions, he promptly responded with clarifying information and willingness to adjust the work and add on caulking our windows and weatherstripping a door and more. Also, the price was most reasonable -- significantly less than the other company with more items included. He then scheduled the work at our convenience and his team of three, led by Eric, arrived promptly at 8 AM and worked hard until 5:30 pm. In the 53 years we have been in the house we have done about five major remodeling jobs/additions, and a whole bunch more of minor improvements. We have been very happy with most of the firms and workers, and a couple less so. Of all the crews that have worked in our home, Eric and his team were outstanding in every way -- so helpful, courteous, hardworking, quiet, neat, patient in answering questions, and so much more!!! They cleaned up afterwards and it was great to wake up this morning and feel the notable difference in the especially leaky part of the house. We cannot say enough good things about HESS -- Mohammed, Eric and the other technicians!!! And, we are looking forward to significantly lower energy costs. Mohammed did a pretty thorough air & insulation review of our 5500 ft2 home. I wasn't really expecting any large problems since the home was built in 2013 but still it was really interesting to follow him around and see where all the leaks are. He did a blower door test for overall house pressure/leaks and went around every room with an IR meter which clearly showed where air is leaking in (or out) of the house. He helpfully narrated as we went. Then we got a full written report a day later with recommendations but so far no pressure to hire him to do any of them. The $500 cost seemed about right for a large 5500 ft2 house and the 1.5-2 hrs it took. One note: Even though it's called an energy audit, there was no audit of water, electrical, gas or other energy-related items; this was just an air and ventilation audit. read more

Edit: Just had weatherization done with HESS 2 days ago and WOW! We live in a three story town home with southwest facing windows and on a 90 degree day like today the A/C has barely had to turn on. We are so much more comfortable and I can already tell we are going to save hundreds on our power bill every year. We are just blown away at the quality of work that was done; it really feels like the biggest life hack. Mohammed and his team at HESS were great from start to finish on our home insulation project. Our finished attic was so hot in the summer that we had to install two window A/C units just to keep it somewhat comfortable. We had several contractors come out to look at it, each coming back with different solutions. Finally, we invested in a home energy audit with HESS to get to the bottom of the problem. What a great investment that turned out to be! Turns out we were losing more than 50% of our heating and A/C through the roof because of a lack of good insulation. The HESS team came back with a reasonable estimate for the work and they got it done in about 2.5 days. The team was courteous and clean and the communication before, during and after the job was A+. Mohammed performed an audit for my house back in October of 2018. He was very professional and knowledgeable. The report identified some key area's I knew needed to be addressed, but at the time I was undecided if I wanted to have the work completed. Fast forward 6 mos. later Mohammed happen to reach out to me via email to let me know that there were additional energy savings rebates. After a few back and forth emails and realizing I would receive more than half the cost of the project back in rebates, I decided to move forward with the recommended insulation and sealing work. The Hess team arrived during the allotted time frame and began the process of setting up, making sure to cover the floor surfaces where they would be working. The workers were very professional and courteous. They completed all work agreed to in the contract and little more, they showed me all areas they had insulated and sealed. The work completed caused a 60% improvement air change rate and I can tell a difference already. I haven't had to turn on my AC as often as I did this same time last year. Mohammed should train small business owners how to run their businesses well! From beginning to end the process of working with him and his team was a pleasure. We found HESS through Pepco's Home Performance energy savings program. Mohammed was responsive, arrived on time for the audit, and made sure to ask us about what specific issues concerned us. He went through the results of the audit, and gave us information on approximately what sort of credit we would get from Pepco, and what the best options were for some tricky cellar walls and improperly vented attic spaces. He included photos in the quote, as well as results of the air leakage in our home, and what percentage improvement he expected with proper insulation. When it came time for the actual work, the men arrived on time with a smile on their faces. They worked hard and non-stop, finishing in one day, and a few hours a few days later. They would have actually finished in one day, but since the men had already been working 10 hours straight, I asked Mohammed to let them return another day. Throughout the day, Mohammed walked us through all the work that was being done and answered all my questions. He was on-site several times that day, and always checked in with me. We're just at the beginning of winter here - so far our upstairs is maintaining a much more uniform temperature and I don't hear the furnace firing up so many times during the night. Prior to the insulation we had quite a few hot spots/cold spots, depending on the season. Mohammed has made the Pepco rebate process easy to manage so far, handling all the paperwork, and giving me estimates along the way as far as what he thinks we'll get back. It looks like the rebate will cover about 4/5 of the cost - that's a win! read more

Based on positive reviews from Angie's List, I contacted Home Energy Savings Solution to conduct an energy audit for our townhouse, which was built in the 1980s, but had been renovated in 2005. Mohammed, who is the lead energy consultant, promptly emailed to schedule an appointment in November 2014. After doing a brief tour of the townhouse and discussing problem areas, he spent about 1.5 hours doing the audit. I was surprised by how comprehensive the audit was and the report which came about a week later. He noted the attic insulation was extremely poor and lower wall areas were completely exposed, resulting in major heat loss during the winter and discomfort in the summer. We had suspected this was a problem, but seeing the pictures of the attic in the report was compelling. The audit was about $275 and well worth the investment for a comprehensive audit. The report suggested two strategies for insulating the attic. I appreciate that Mohammend prioritized the strategies and did not try to force us to take the more expensive option. His professionalism was great and he answered several questions that I had about the report. We scheduled the attic insulation project for December 3, 2014 and requested that 2 doors (front door + garage entry door) have the weather stripping replaced at $60 each. I appreciated that Mohammed said it would be a full-day project and take up most of the morning and part of the afternoon. Luis and a partner came at 8:45am to remove the old attic insulation and install the new material. Mohammed came around 10:30am to check the work and see if everything was OK. Overall, the work went really well. I am very satisfied with the work that Mohammed, Luis, and Juan did. The attic insulation project was about $2,800, including a credit for the cost of the home energy audit. We hired Mohammed to complete a home energy audit on the recommendation of a neighbor who had hired him a couple of years ago to improve insulation in the attic and reduce airflow leaks. I had already had another highly rated company do a home energy audit but felt that their scope was a bit ridiculous and expensive, so I decided to get another opinion. In fact, I got two other companies to provide estimates. I liked Mohammed's approach and professionalism the best. He didn't go off the previous blow door test but did his own assessment so that he could get familiar with the peculiarities of our home. He then provided me with a modeling estimate of where he thought I would see energy savings. Neither of the other two companies provided anything close to the level of detail in their reports. His proposal was very easy to understand and cost competitive. We signed a contract and got on the schedule for about 5 weeks later. The two-man crew showed up exactly on time, which is a rarity these days, and began by covering everything with plastic to reduce dust and mess. They had hoped to complete all the work in a day; however, it ran into a second day. There were some issues with equipment that caused the second day to go longer but I appreciate their desire to do it right rather than just rush through. Mohammed did a follow-up blow-door test to show me where we saw a decrease in air flow through the house which translates to energy savings. They did a great job - all the work looks amazing and now I can't wait to see how my house performs better. I highly recommend Mohammed and his crew and would hire them again. read more

Mohammed was absolutely professional and thorough. As we walked through the house when performing the audit, he explained issues. He was prompt with the report and then flexible in our options for moving forward, if we so chose to. We followed up with him and his company to perform the work from the audit. His crew was punctual and professional. When he performed the "test out" or post-audit-work evaluation, (10% is the BGE program minimum standard to qualify for energy improvement rebates) he said 20% is pretty good and normal. Us? We improved our air leak efficiency by almost 40% thanks to his audit and work! We could feel the difference almost immediately as they added 16" of blown-in insulation, among other things. I received the report a day or so later and it was also easy to understand. I would never have thought of some of the things that he mentioned, so the audit was well worth the money as far as I am concerned. Pepco subsidizes home energy audits at the cost of $100 to the homeowner (that is paid to the contractor). I selected HESS for this work. The initial report was amazing detailed, informative and professional. Based on the report, I contracted with HESS to undertake the two major energy-conservation upgrades: improving the attic space and improving the crawl space beneath the house. I was skeptical about undertaking the project, but the incredible amount of work that HESS performed showed that this was a great improvement project to undertake. The crew was supremely professional -- I've never seen so much plastic sheeting for protection in my life. They were here three days, and installed the sheeting every morning to protect the home, and removed it each evening as part of their clean up. Needless to say, they were super clean in their work. I was amazed how HESS was able to get around to all sorts of small spaces in seal up air penetration. Everything is super neat, tacked down, and the like. They obviously are proud of their craftsmanship. Follow up testing showed a nearly 50 percent improvement in stemming unnecessary air leakage from our home. This will reduce our energy consumption and makes our home more "green" for the future. We expect to receive a rebate on the work done through a PEPCO program ($2000 max). With the PEPCO rebate, the work still ended up costing a not insubstantial amount, but I am absolutely convinced it is worth it. There will be a pay-back overtime in reduced energy usage, but I also feel that the house is upgraded in terms of craftsmanship and its more "green" footprint. So, even though a lot of the work is out of sight, I receive the psychic benefit of knowing how good a job HESS did. Because this is something that pays back over time and PEPCO has the current rebate programs, I recommend that one undertake this kind of project sooner than later. You'll find Mohammed, who conducts the audits, to be a great guy and super professional. Juan, who is effectively the work supervisor, has more than a decade of experience in energy-conservation upgrades and he exudes professionalism and craftsmanship. Home Energy Saving Solutions, LLC is the best! We first had an energy audit done by them, which - as we had feared - showed that our newly purchased townhouse was as leaky as a sieve. Warm air was escaping everywhere. Mr. El-Ghoul made a great analogy: it was as if we had windows open in our attic. He then gave us a proposal to fix the problem, which included spraying foam insulation into the attic, adding rigid insulation and weather-stripping, polystyrene stops, and loose fill borate stabilized cellulose insulation. If these terms don't mean much to you, let me just assure you that it worked. There was a 25% improvement in terms of what our HVAC system has to heat (or cool) and air being lost to the outside. Working with Mr. El-Ghoul and his team was pleasant and worry free. We highly, very highly, recommend HESS. read more
