a smiling lemon character on the side of a truck
    Justin L.

"Poutine" and "Italian" toppings, eh? Sounds like some creative cultural twists, which I don't necessarily object to. Just don't tell my Polish babcia. I mean, with a name like Holy Perogy, one expects a sprinkling of culinary kitsch. Although I suppose the name isn't entirely inappropriate: these Eastern European dumplings have their own patron saint in Poland. Next time you stop by and feel scandalized by the inauthentic use of cheddar or mozzarella, you may exclaim, "Święty Jacek z pierogami!" (St. Hyacinth and his pierogi!) to register your shock, roughly equivalent to "Holy smokes!". It's a great idea for a food truck. Pierogi were originally peasants' food, so they are definitely a solid choice for pedestrians and the common folk! These pierogi are first boiled, then pan-fried, then sprinkled with the listed toppings. They somehow manage to be simultaneously light as filling. Definitely better than the chewy or goopy kind you get in some places or in the frozen section of your supermarket.

Aaaaaamazeballs. I had the poutine perogies three hours ago, and I am tempted to drive around town to find the truck for more.

    Review Highlights - Holy Perogy

This time I decided to try the "Mexican" which was beef and potato perogies topped with sour cream and pico de gallo.

First things first, this doesn't have the oomph and character coolness of Japadog that locals and visitors have grown to love. No long line ups here, no uniformed Japanese speaking staff, no photos of hotdogs with different toppings, and yes, no photo of Ice Cube too. There was only a friendly smile from the owner and one unique item offering which was the tandoori dog, choice of either kosher beef or kosher chicken. For $5.50, it was just plain and ordinary with only a hint of tandoori flavour basted on the hotdog. Despite the onions being nicely cooked in butter, bread rightly toasted, it was just boilerplate okay. It lacked creativity, texture and presentation, the wow factor. I was expecting toppings as chutney, yogurt, maybe paneer, or some curry infused side condiments, but there was only mustard, ketchup, and bbq sauce, typical for the dirty water dog varieties, not a stand named as Tandoori Tikka Dog. Sigh. Didn't mean to be the bearer of bad news here, but I'm giving it 2.5 stars and hoping they could improve as there's still lots of room left for more ethnic fusion street foods here in Vancouver. Meanwhile, I don't think it deserves a visit from Anthony Bourdain as of yet.

The uncle who runs the cart was the absolute sweetest. He spent an extra long time fixing up my husband's tandoori tikka veggie dog, especially because tofudogs are especially tasteless. The result was a flavorful and creative hot dog, which we all loved! Highly recommend!

I was really impressed with the price (7 dollars including a pop) and the choice of toppings and bun - potato or whole wheat. I went with the potato bun, and added pickles, fried onions and Franks to the tartar sauce, coleslaw and lemon wedge that the halibut comes standard with. In addition to the halibut, they serve up salmon, lamb, turkey and buffalo, as well as a variety of premium toppings. The service, quality and flavour were really impressive - I will be back for a veggie dogs smothered in jalapeno and cheese the next time a 'dog craving hits!

So I took they dive and got the bison jalapeno dog. I liked the fact it was gluten free as I'm suppose to limit my wheat intake. I only wish that they had more options for the specialty side instead of having just pork brawst as most die hard health nuts aren't really the fan of the pig. Even though the prices are way higher for these dogs than the guy down the block I still don't feel as guilty eating these dogs. Oh and I loved how I was given a few free chips on the side. Defiately will be back to try some of the other items.

Focacciaza caught my eye as there was a small line up and parasol set up outside their industrial kitchen space in Strathcona. That, and did I mention I was starving? The offerings are simple: loaded focaccia (garden / cheese / toppings), a soup, grilled cheese, and daily meat or veg sandwich. I left the specifics to Focacciaza and asked for the meat sandwich; I was told it was roast beef today - perfect, I'm not super picky but it sounded wholesome. Bread was moist and light, but hearty enough for the fillings: roast beef, pickled onions, spinach, smear of mayo. Seasoning was perfect - I demolished that sandwich without actually picking it apart so I apologize if I missed anything / added anything lol Delicious enough that I will stop by again if I were in the area, perhaps on a cooler day for soup and a grilled cheese, or the loaded focaccia! A little pricey considering no seating / takeout only and limited options, hence four stars.
