I went in to have a ring of my wife's reconstructed to fit within a series and Patrick was only happy to oblige. I've found gifts for our mothers, my sister, and my wife of course. I have recommended them to my friends throughout the years who are just as picky as I am when it comes to jewelry. They helped me customize my existing engagement ring by adding a halo around the center stone. The finished product was better than I could have imagined. I found my way to Holtzmann's by way of Furrer-Jacot (FJ). My fiancee and I fell in love with one of the FJ wedding bands and then checked for local U.S. dealers. We live in Indianapolis, but were not impressed with our local dealer, so we ended up traveling to Holtzmann's in Chicago. Patrick has been fantastic to work with through this process. The store is in a nice area of town and is a beautiful jewelry boutique. You won't have the experience found in Chicago's Diamond District where people are pushing products on you. Instead, you will find a comfortable environment near quaint shops and great eateries. The service is laid back yet attentive. They carry lots of higher end and niche jewelry with pricing better than you will find elsewhere. Also, I really can't stress enough the wonderful service we received from Holtzmann's. We will shop again in the future and recommend Holtzmann's to any discerning customers considering a jewelry purchase. read more

My very elderly mother wanted larger clasps on two necklaces and to have a diamond cluster ring, given to her by her deceased husband, resized so she could wear it again. All three pieces needed cleaning as well. I took her to Holtzmann's based on their reviews on Yelp and because it was near my mother. Michael waited on her and he was very nice to her. He suggested large circular spring clasps on the two necklaces and measured her ring size. Using his loupe he noted that one of the prongs on her diamond ring was bent from wear and would need to be repaired. This all sounded reasonable and his price estimate seemed reasonable as well. We were to come back a week later. We did. The pieces were ready. My mother was able to put on her necklaces by herself with the larger clasps. All three pieces were dazzlingly clean. He said two of the prongs needed repair so the price was just a few dollars more than that which he quoted. My mother was so happy with her jewelry; it looked brand new and she could wear it again. Michael also showed us some jewelry designs that we noticed in a case by the door. I thought it was vintage but it was actually new designs based on old styles. He was a good salesman in a low-key way; seemingly had all the time in the world for us. I would go back to Holtzmann's. read more

I went to Holtzmann's on two separate occasions while I was shopping for an engagement ring. The first time I came in I spoke to the one brother and his wife and they gave me some information about rings. It was an informal, casual conversation, I knew nothing at the time and was relatively helpful. The second time I visited the store is when I was completely turned off by the place. This time, I spoke to the other brother. I told him my range was from $5000 to $7000, which I get is a wide range. He kind of snickered at me and said "oh, well that's a really big range". Then he said "well, obviously I'm going to try to sell you on the high end and a $7000 ring". That comment alone made me realize I wanted to go elsewhere. An answer I would liked to have heard would have been "i know you have a rather large range of 5-7K, so what I can do is show you rings within that range, and you can kind of see the difference in ring quality/size within the range". In addition, I really didn't know a whole lot about the 4 C's, cut, clarity, etc... never once did they say "hey, would you like to set up an appointment so we can educate you on the different qualities of center stones/rings". The place I ultimately went with actually sat down with me for 45 minutes and really helped me understand the different qualities of rings, etc. They also kept pushing really hard, platinum over white gold, which platinum is more expensive. Maybe they are right that platinum is better than white gold (which is debatable according to many other places and appraisers I went to after), but it just always seemed like they kept pushing the top of your budget and the most expensive thing. I'm giving them two stars because it wasn't one star bad, the wife and husband appeared to be nice people, and the store was clean and professional looking... I just didn't like their sales approach (particularly the brother). If you're someone like me that knows nothing at all about rings going into it, I would highly recommend not going to this place. Do yourself a big favor and go somewhere in which they will take time to educate you on what you're buying, instead of immediately trying to sell you on your highest price point. If you know everything there is to know coming in, and know exactly what you're looking for, maybe it's an okay place to go. For me, it's about having a comfort level with the people selling the ring - in which they are willing to educate me and not give me the feeling that they are trying to sell me the most expensive item - and I just didn't get that from them. read more

I am helping a good friend design an engagement ring for his girlfriend (also my friend). We started our search at Holtzmann's and were greeted by Michael himself. While their selection is gorgeous (and very different!), we were looking for a specific design which we explained to Michael. We came into that jewelry shop having done significant research. After showing us a few shapes/designs that we were not interested in, we again explained the exact sizes and shapes that we were interested in. With a slight brush-off and difference in tone, Michael said that he could bring in diamonds that we were interested in... which was great, however he wrote down 1/2 - 3/4 ct larger than we wanted. When we pointed out his error, he said something along the lines of "no you'll want to go bigger". Again, no we specifically explained what we were looking for - price range, size, shape. Michael treated us like he was driving the bus and tried re-directing our design. After all of that, Michael promised to email with a day to come back to look at diamonds that he would bring into his store. We finally received his email TWO weeks after our original visit. If I'm helping a friend spend over $10,000 on a diamond ring, you better believe I expect follow-up in a timely fashion, especially from the owner. We've since gone with a different jewelry designer - one who understands our vision and connects with us. read more
