Business travelers will find A full health club, a great English pub, a Starbucks and a Buca di Beppo in the lounge of this 3-story facility. If you haven't been to Europe, there are a few oddities you might never have experienced. First, there are no key cards here. You get a real key with an odd looking keychain. The chain acts like a master switch to the lights and TV. SO if you arrive at night and the door slams shut, you will be truly groping in the dark and wondering why the light switch does not work.. If this happens, open the door to the hall to let light in the room. Find the "thingamajiggy" on the wall and insert your key chain. Now flip on the switches. Newcastle can be fairly dark and the lighting is still pretty dark. Make sure you also turn on each outlet. No doubt after a long travel your phone might need charging and you don't want to find out that your phone is not charging just because you didn't flip the switch. The room is large enough and the bathroom is a decent size with heated towel racks. The gym is full service and very popular in the area. You will find many of the locals coming and going after work. Also the restaurant and pub are well utilized every day of the week. The Victory pub is probably where you would want to eat as service is a little faster and you can get more local fare. We ate at Buca di Beppo one night for variety and comfort food one night. The dishes were basic but different from the American menus. Highly recommend if you are strictly here for business and will not need to be in downtown Newcastle.

The hotel itself is a bit of a mixed bag, the ground floor reception area with bar & restaurant feels quite modern (I figured it must've had a recent refit) but the rooms were starting to show their age. The bathroom in my room in particular was looking a bit rough around the edges. The room was warm & fairly quiet, facilitating a fairly sound sleep, although there was some noise creeping in from surrounding rooms. There were signs stating they offered WiFi throughout the hotel, but I didn't use it. The health club looked fairly modern & there seemed to be a good number of locals using it. Despite the hotel being full over the weekend, the staff throughout where very friendly & helpful, they really did give a great account of themselves. All in all this was a decent, if short, visit to the hotel. I'd struggle to recommend the hotel to visitors simply because of its location, but if you were visiting the business park for work then I'd say you're best to stay here.

Arrival time/date at Hotel Bar: Thursday 6th October 2011 at approx. 7pm…read moreDisgusting Bar Service and Overpriced Drinks After enjoying a recent few nights at the Premier Inn at Macclesfield North, my wife and I were impressed with this hotel group. We therefore decided to stop fro a drink at a north east Premier Inn before catching a flight from Newcastle Airport. I ordered a pint of Bombadier beer for myself and a vodka and orange for my wife. The barman asked if my wife would like to 'double up' on her vodka. She said yes, primarily because in the north east region a 'double up' usually costs just an extra pound. We both noticed that the barman put the first measure through an optic from a Smirnoff Blue vodka bottle and the second from an unrecognisable vodka bottle which looked like a cheap and dubious 'house' vodka. I was immediately disgusted by the young dark-haired barman who seemed to have a cocky attitude. He then asked for about £9.70 for the drinks. I said that I was disappointed with such a high price and said that he should warn customers about high prices for doubles in future. He shrugged his shoulders, grinned and said: Not my fault I only work here. I then politely pointed out that we were dissatisfied and that if there was a competence problem at the hotel bar, it was down to him, not his management. He giggled and again made the same inane remark: I only work here. We paid, we drank our drinks and then left the hotel, which used to be known at one time as the Wheatsheaf Hotel. We will never return to this hotel. We feel cheated and we consider that the barman was perhaps not a decent, honest man. If you don't wish to pay through the nose, or receive a dubious mixture of known and unknown brands in your glass, or to be treated in such a cavalier 'couldn't care less attitude' by incompetent ignorant bar staff, then this is a hotel bar that you should perhaps avoid. Zero marks for whoever recruits and trains the staff here.

But slowly, there are little things that have made me like the place more and more. Sure, it's still average, it isn't going to make for a memorable experience, but it is comfortable and relatively well maintained. I'm in here every week, and it's nice that from the 2nd/3rd week in, the staff knew my name. My previous stay, I barely registered over 3 months of weekly visits. I stay in the superior rooms, which have great showers, and the beds are pretty comfortable. I've even managed to venture into the gym, which, only 3 machines and no cleaning equipment, isn't ideal, but it's OK too. Now the restaurant, it's definitely nothing higher than an OK. The food is very much feels like freezer food rather than particularly fresh, but it's certainly OK enough, although more vegetarian options would be nice. I haven't bothered with breakfast, for the cost, I know as a veggie it won't be worth it (13.95 for breakfast? No way....). Parking costs £5 a night as well, so be prepared. Novotel, it's definitely OK, but sometimes OK is good enough.

We got here Friday evening, parked up in their small car park. Don't know how many rooms they have but they only have 9 car park spaces. We were greeted by a very nice and friendly receptionist. She showed us to our room, 4, which was the first one at the top of the stairs. The room was warm and cosy, much needed on a cold January night. She told us when breakfast was and left us to it. Our room was similar to others in the photos. We grabbed our stuff and got comfy. After a good night's sleep, breakfast was a selection of fruit, croissants, cereal and a variety of cooked meals. Next evening we had our evening meal here too. We both had the same and was delicious with great polite and friendly staff. I would come again as its a lovely friendly little hotel.

Alright... now there is a jump isn't there!…read more I've since stayed at the Horton.. a lot. But I moved on to another hotel in the end as I found it... lacking. Depsite multiple entreaties on a weekly basis, the options for a cooked vegetarian breakfast only appeared for one week of my stays, and disappeared again, never to return. Staff never seemed to remember me, despite my weekly visits over a course of about 3 months (bar one, who was lovely). The garden rooms have walls so thin, you can hear people blowing their noses next door (oh yes, and other delights). The vegetarian options revolved around a puff pastry plate that had various vegetables on top (tomato/beetroot, vegetable, tomato... you get the picture) - what started off as impressive started to simply tail off towards average. Hiked up prices over Christmas and the noisy rooms were the killer for me though - what I had liked about being tucked away in the country was lost when you had Countdown at 5am playing next door. There is the portrayal of homeliness and hospitality (and in fairness, the first week I was there, the waitress who looked after the hotel was nothing short of fantastic... no one else lived up to her level of service after that), but it was simply a veneer. Having stayed at another hotel (more budget than boutique), I've had much better experiences, and even after a couple of weeks, they knew who I was and my preferences. After 3 months at the Horton, they didn't even come close to that. It's a shame, but it simply didn't live up to the initial standards of my first week there.
