I spent most of my final year of undergrad writing a massive thesis on the Lindisfarne Gospels and…read morethe people who love it (more or less). My awesome parents decided that the best graduation gift would be to send me (and my mom) on a whirlwind trip of the places I'd studied. A highlight of our week, certainly, was the two nights we spent on Holy Island at the Manor House. I think most people rent a car (or drive their own) to cross the causeway to the island. We had no car--took a trian from London to Berwick-Upon-Tweed--but were able to get a taxi to take us over as soon as the tide went out for the evening. If you want to spend a couple of days breathing monastic air and soaking up palpable history, stay at the Manor House. It's smack in the middle of the island, which was one of the coolest places I've ever been (OK, so my crush on St. Cuthbert makes me a little biased...) The place is basically on top of the priory ruins, and if your room is on the right side, you have a great view of gardens, boats, ruins, sea, and the castle. We were on the backside and a view of the un-charming roof of a house, but it was all fine. Breakfast and dinner are included in the cost of the stay and are really lovely. A menu with a variety of choices--my mom had a seafood pie...I had something vaguely Indian one night and something beefy and pastry-y another. Cozy breakfast with eggs, toast, and tea. Staffed mostly by teens from other European countries who seemed to be working/traveling for the summer. We were there in August; at Christmas they sent us a card with a lovely picture of the island (there's a whole series of artwork done by one local artist all over the hotel). It brought back all kinds of lovely memories. Can't wait to go back someday and spend another peaceful weekend on Holy Island! If you're going to stay right on the island, this seems to be the place to do it.

I was there for drinks in the bar with friends who stayed there and who were very comfortable. Service was pleasant. They have some of the best views on the Island, directly to the Castle. So if you spend much time in your room, consider this aspect. The gardens are directly beside the Priory and more open and pleasant than others we say which tended to be walled higher obscuring the views.

Probably more like 3.5 stars but here we go…read more.. We stayed for 2 nights while visiting the castle and exploring the area. The hotel is perfectly acceptable. Not updated, but well maintained and great views and location. Staff was relatively helpful. We had breakfast one morning (included with the room) and it was not good. We ate at a different hotel the next day and enjoyed it more. This is where I disclaim that Im American, so maybe my food preferences were just different. Theres nothing overtly wrong with it. We just didn't like it. We had made dinner reservations but ended up canceling them and exploring nearby towns and islands. All in all, it was fine. Id probably try a different hotel next time, but i dont have any complaints.

The room was clean and comfortable; obviously it's not the most modern place, but the bed was comfy and it had a good shower. No lift, sadly. The real star of the show was the food - we'd booked in the restaurant for the evening meal, which was just as well as it was pretty full, given the reduced seating available due do COVID. The menu has a great selection of seafood, and I have to recommend the seafood sharing platter, which was the perfect size for two as a main course. For starters, I had the beetroot cured salmon, and Herself had fishcakes; we were both too full to manage a dessert after that! We also splashed out and had an extremely nice bottle of wine from Marlborough, NZ to remind us of our trip there last year (we've become huge fans of NZ wines now). For breakfast the next morning, I resorted to form and had the full veggie option, while Herself chose the Craster kipper, which I am assured was probably the best kipper she's ever had. I'm not a huge fan of kippers, so will take her word on that. All in all, it was a lovely break and we really liked this hotel. It was only slightly marred by discovering on leaving that the car next to us in the car park (which is about 100m away round the corner) had dinged our wing slightly with their door and left without a note. But that's not the hotel's fault.

I tried on Friday morning but they weren't very hopeful that they would be able to manage our group. However, as I was the first to arrive I had a word with the lovely manageress who was on duty, and she very quickly arranged a slot for us at 7pm. As it turned out, only 6 of the group decided to come to the hotel for food, so we weren't as cramped as we'd thought. The standard of food was excellent, I was particularly impressed with my starter of scallops, which were beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. For mains, I decided on a whim to try the veggie curry, which was tasty although I found it a teensy bit on the dry side. But full marks to the Collingwood for accommodating us all on a busy Friday evening.

This is the type of place I would want to own if I went into the hotel business! Bought a deal for…read moremy boyfriend for Christmas which was an overnight stay, two course dinner, breakfast and Molton Brown gift bag for what seemed like a great deal at £89. They showed that they care right from the booking of the stay where I called and got a lovely chap who couldn't be more welcoming! I then had to call back and ask if it could be rescheduled about three weeks later and this was no problem for them - great! Sometimes if you have a voucher places act like they couldn't care less. So it is just over the border into England and in a tiny wee village and looks lovely as you approach. We were greeted by a lovely receptionist and shown to a very nice room after she made us a dinner reservation in the restaurant. The Molton brown gift was amazing - a proper box of normal sized goodies. The bar was nice and cosy and the wine prices were really great for a hotel with the price of bottles ranging from £13 to £20 so we settled down with a bottle of Chenin blanc and let the afternoon pass! We got ready for dinner and went downstairs to the bar - which was heaving surprisingly! So the lovely waitress took us through to the library and took our order while we sat in front of a toasty real fire. The pink mojito was I am afraid to say really disappointing - there was no crushed ice in it as is usual but a few sad melted cubes who were not doing their job. However dinner time was here and the menu looked really great. We were told by the waiter that it was only lamb which carried a supplement and all other dishes were included in our deal - fantastic value so we couldn't resist the starter of scallops, black pudding and pea purée. It was awesome! Three huge juicy perfectly cooked scallops with spicy soft black pudding and fresh crushed peas. What's not to like?! For mains we went for steak, I had the ribeye cooked to medium perfection with crisp onion rings, chips and peppercorn sauce. Boyfriend had the amazing fillet beef which was delish although slightly over done for his liking with truffle mash. They were both great. We were stuffed but couldn't resist pudding and put away a fabulous creamy baileys and Malteser cheesecake that was exactly what was needed to finish off a pretty perfect dinner. We had a comfortable nights stay and a great brekkie the next morning - full English cooked to your order. Only thing was the bacon was too crispy for my liking - but that's just my preference so that's ok. I would highly recommend a stay here or a visit for dinner if you for any reason happened to be nearby! The staff were super lovely, the hotel comfortable and welcoming and the food delish.
