Every single member of staff I dealt with was warm, friendly, gracious and super helpful. Everything was excellent but there were a few things missing that, if available, would've made my stay super excellent. -No Room Service: I was staying alone for three nights and didn't like the idea of sitting by myself in the restaurant to eat my meals so room service would've been preferable for me. Because of this, I was spending money elsewhere and bringing food to my room so you lost revenue there. I'm sure a lot of solo travellers probably do this.  -No Fridge: I also brought some small snacks and drinks for my stay and there was nowhere to store the things that were required to keep chilled. Real milk (not a fan of hotel UHT milk), pop, wine, salsa, yoghurts, etc. -No Safe: I had to carry my laptop everywhere with me as there was nowhere in the room to secure my high value belongings.

So, knowing we were in Newcastle for the night, I quickly researched hotels that were close to the train station where we would be arriving and then quickly departing the next day. The Hampton by Hilton in Newcastle was a great location, situated across the street from the train station. Access to the lobby is a bit cumbersome, as you have to take an elevator up to the second floor to access the lobby to check in. If you have a lot of luggage, it's a challenge since the elevators are small. One of the elevators appeared to malfunction, failing to connect when you tried to go up or down. Check-in was easy once you made it to the lobby. The staff were friendly and affable, and gave clear information on the hotel amenities and check-out instructions. There was a bar next to the reception desk, with a little lounge area that offered breakfast from 7 am to 10 am. Our room was on the third floor, all the way down the hall, but we had the corner room, which was nice. The carpet was a bit annoying to bring the luggage down and there are no trolley carts to put the luggage on them -- granted the elevators were too small to fit one. In the room, the king-sized bed was comfortable, and we had room for our luggage and to move about. We had a lovely view of the street with the train station down the way. The room had a desk area and a cozy couch seating area. The sliding door to the bathroom also served for the closet as well, which provided enough space. The shower had good water pressure and water heat. The power outlets were appropriately positioned by the beds so easy plug-ins for phones and other ipads, tablets, and chargers. Overall, the room worked for what we needed, and the location was perfect for walking distance to the train station, restaurants, and bars in Newcastle that is quite a beautiful downtown in the city.

First of all, there is no access to ice machines, or ice bucket in your room. You must visit the bar for both. You could probably call it up, but that is always a hassle. People at the bar seem like they're forced to be nice to you, but if could have been a bad day. I'd stay at this hotel again and again. I highly recommend it, if not for the tiny fixes to make it a FIVE STAR. The towel warming rack in the bathroom is a nice touch. Please fix the elevator. Lastly, the worst trait of this hotel is the waiter staff during breakfast in the restaurant. My girlfriend and I waited so long for our coffee, tea, and toast that it had to be reordered. Suddenly the reorder comes to our table with black tea instead of green tea. Within seconds later, after a half hour of waiting our original order comes. The waitress is completely confused. There are loads of bars and restaurants nearby, and it's a 15 minute walk to the city centre (there is also a Quayside electric bus which takes you to the centre, or you can take a taxi from outside the hotel). Now on to the interior...I just love it! It's dark and sensual with a lot of purples. The rooms are spacious, and the suites are fantastic: luxurious comfort is how I would describe it. And those beds?! Amazing night's sleep. My husband is American and it's traditional to host a Rehearsal Dinner before your wedding. We held this is a private dining area in the brasserie and from all the planning to the actual event, I could not have had better service. The food is all made on site by the chef and his/her team, and it was delicious. The spa is really adorable, and a lovely place to come and relax. We had a couple's massage. The staff were extremely professional and I loved chilling out in the relaxation room. 5/5 for everything about this place. We had such a great experience from start to finish.

Situated at the end (beginning?) of Grey Street, you will be only a quick walk from the coach station and near wonderful shops, restaurants, and general action. I actually never made it to the hotel's restaurant, as I was too tempted by what I could see from my window. The rooms' decor is also quite charming, and in keeping with the Georgian sensibilities of the building itself. High ceilings, ensuites, deliciously-comfortable linens and impeccable standards for cleanliness round out the equation. As an added bonus, the in-room radio was delightful. I think it was BBC4 that aired an hour or so of very sweet alternative folk rock with some nice liner notes. Yet another reason to curse Clear Channel for buying up all of our US airways.

The bath was modern with a large rain-forest shower---though it didn't have a shower door---water got everywhere. There is free wifi and you can order room service from the sports bar & grill adjacent to the lobby. Overall the Sandman is a good Newcastle Hotel option especially if you want to be near the stadium.

Pros *The bed was the perfect firmness, and the blanket was a down one - so super comfortable! *I loved the shower! The water pressure is robust and the hot water is pippin hot. Additionally they have two shower heads - a traditional side one that detaches and you can direct the water, and a waterfall head, which was heavenly! They also provide both shampoo, conditioner, and bodywash, and there's a speaker in the bathroom so if you're listening to the tv you can hear everything loud and clear. *Breakfast was devine. Guest's need to make reservations in advance and it's booked in 30 minute increments. During my stay the 8:30 time slot was full, but I was able to get a 8am one. There's a cold bar with meats, cheese, bread, fruit, and a yogurt/granola station. For beverages they had juice and smoothies! I was already impressed with the buffet and didn't know that guests could also order hot items a la cart. I decided on eggs benedict and it was just what I need to fuel me up for the day! *Pretty good range of channels for the tv, but and I'm not sure if this is region specific not I didn't see a travel channel, but they did have the food channel! Cons *You need to bring your key everywhere because there are sections of the building and elevator where you need to scan it to access other areas. This was very foreign to me so I looked really dumb not understanding what so many sections of the building looked locked. Additionally, I got lost several times. It's not a traditional long hallway, but instead many different sections - so if you're directionally challenged this might be difficult *At least in my room there were a couple of lights that couldn't turn on or I couldn't figure out how to turn it on, and there's no light to shine on the whole room, only small lights for certain sections, but not the main sleeping area. It's location is perfect if you want to wander along to the quayside and the pubs, restaurants etc, if you don't want to go far then there is a 'spoons next door that does pitchers of cocktails for a fiver, and they will look at you strangely if you reply to the question 'how many glasses do you want' with 'just a straw will do'....

Also took a jog along the Tyne...there is a boardwalk/ pathway for bikes/ walking/ jogging. Also, there is a spa and fitness center within the hotel...I didn't visit it, but the hotel has one. The fitness center closes relatively early (9PM)... wish it would have stayed open later or 24 hr. The restaurant is decent, full bar, wide variety of breakfast items. 24 hour room service. Food was a bit expensive and breakfast was £14 if not included in the room rate. My room overlooked the river, great view (I booked a room under 'River view', they had other types of rooms to choose from). The room was clean, spacious. Had a tv, coffee/tea maker, blowdryer, ironing board, refrigerator, small table, desk. Front desk service was great, no complaints. On the last day, I checked out early and they were able to store my luggage all day while I trekked around Newcastle. Ride to the airport cost approx £10. I did not have a car, however, there is a car park available. Not sure of the rates. I would definitely recommend staying here... would stay here again myself if/when I'm back in the area.
