I was flying into Laredo and wanted a lighter dinner since it was late. I am not so familiar with the area, so I used Yelp, as I usually do, to find a spot and verify the closing time. Japanese sounded perfect, especially sashimi. Walked in the establishment, was welcomed and seated quickly. I ordered a soup, salad and my favorite selection of sashimi. Usually I would have added in a Japanese beer, but just tea tonight. Also, no sushi. Everything was great, served with care and satisfaction that they were serving a quality product! I was in town for work all week and looked at Yelp to try something different. After the reading the reviews for Hokkaido Sushi I had to give it a try. I'm so glad I did! I started with a cup of miso soup. Usually when I go to other places Miso soup is mostly broth with only a few pieces of tofu and seaweed. This cup was full of ingredients and just the right temperature. I then tried the cucumber salad. I can't stop thinking about it. I would go back and just ordered two bowls and call it a day. It was that good! I then ended with the Texas roll. I'm not a huge curry fan, but the roll with a little bit of the sauce really was tasty and an interesting combo for my tastebuds. The ramen was great, it was my first time trying, but i really enjoyed it, it seemed very authentic. Now on the other hand, I would say the tempura shrimp roll, and the shrimp dumplings were a little overpriced for the portion size just to keep in mind when ordering. Overall, 3/5. read more

I cannot begin to explain how good this restaurant is. Every time I think of Hokkaido, my mouth waters and I find myself craving the food. I am lucky enough to live less than 2 miles from Hokkaido, so we eat typically eat here about twice each week. The chef and owner, who goes by Q, is a master at his craft. One time when we were eating, he showed me photos of BondST in New York where he used to be Executive Chef. If you have been fortunate enough to eat at BondST, you will understand how good Hokkaido is. While I haven't had anything that wasn't amazing at Hokkaido, I really like the Gyoza, Tuna Crispy Rice, Peanut Sauce Noodles, and the Cucumber Appetizer that always seems to find its way to our table, courtesy of Q. For something different, try the Texas Roll. It is a steak roll with rice and seaweed paper with stir fry veggies, served over a yellow curry sauce. It is damn good! When you walk into Hokkaido, your first impression is not, "Wow, hip place!" so don't fret. The place is a small shop in a strip center. It kind of reminds me of the hole-in-the-wall restaurants in San Francisco's China Town. Don't let the atmosphere fool you, the cuisine here is Top Notch! If you are in Laredo and you are looking for a great meal at a reasonable price, there is no better option than Hokkaido. read more

Quite the surprise. This is real Japanese food and NOT the Japanese/Mexican fusion we are used to in Laredo. The shrimp tempura bento lunch ($8.99) includes miso soup, salad, 3 pieces of sushi, spring roll, steamed rice and tempura. The tempura is really good. The shrimp shumai were a little too sweet for my liking but better with a little soy sauce. The big-eye tuna tarts were good but would have been better with a little less of the mayo dressing. This place will transport you to Japan. We were glad to find a Japanese restaurant in Laredo that doesn't have doritos and chipotle sauce on top. Guiozas are delicious, and they have some japanese beers as well. We recommend the peanut butter noodles with beef. Fried gyoza was a solid 6/10 they only have 2 options for ramen and the ramen was really bad, the egg wasn't poached correctly it was really dry and nasty it was a solid 3/10! Hokkaido is the only authentic sushi restaurant in town. The food is outstanding, the presentation is on point and I'm so happy that this friendly and amazing NYC chef (Bond St., Know it? You should.) decided to come down to the border. The ingredients are fresh, the sushi rice is the correct temperature and flavor and there are always interesting off menu items to try. Although the food is amazing and well made, but I cannot help to feel the same about it's service. The head hostess frequently take away the menu(s) before I or anyone could order, would often get my orders wrong, or forget an order completely. Not to mention that I saw a "special" customer order the bento box after the lunch hour special. Just because the food is great, do not mean it can carry the restaurant alone. The Service is abysmal, the lack of communication, allowing certain customers order food that is well passed the timeframe. read more
