If you think the best barbecue is usually found in the worst part of town, in a place with bars on the windows and just enough grease on the table to write your initials, then this isn't it. But if you're willing to drive maybe 20 minutes off the highway in LaGrange, Georgia, then Hog Heaven may just what you're looking for. First opened in 1996 and then sold maybe a year ago, the owners, past and present, have created and then perpetuated what can easily be called a real barbecue joint. Cutesy décor and teeney boppers stumbling all over themselves to take your order? Not a chance. Rustic. Tables, booths and a bunch of chairs, some matching, others not; and a veteran wait staff, most likely to have been there for years, folks that know their stuff and knows just how good their 'cue really is. Tina was our waitress and correctly pegged the pulled pork at the top of an all-star selection of great eats. Moist, bits of bark in the mix and more than a hint of the smoke flavor that comes from of having spent a long time over a low fire. Not easy to figure what comes in second; close between the king sized pork ribs and the thinly sliced, moist, smoke flavored turkey. No doubt from this barbecue fan (read my more than 100 barbecue reviews on Yelp) but what Hog Heaven's brisket trails the pace setters. Our brisket was maybe a quarter inch thick, stringy and without that thin layer of fat that soaks in the smoke and brings with it the meats' full flavor. There are other offerings which one can only suspect some outsider suggested it'd be good to offer... but who goes to a great barbecue joint to eat a hamburger steak, a pulled pork quesadilla, or, get this, potato soup? One other nit to pick before getting to the sides... and that's the sauces. The HH folks put two on the table: one a unique combination of tomato, vinegar and mustard which was pretty good, mild and a little tart; the other a thicker somewhat spicier sauce with some post munching kick. If you order the brisket (and why would you with pulled pork, ribs and turkey available?) they'll bring a little plastic gizmo of maybe a couple of ounces with what they call their "cowboy sauce," which is really a very good , thick full flavored sauce that also goes very well on all their offerings and deserves to be on the table with the two others. The best deal on the menu is Hog's platters: one meat (you can get a combo) and two sides. Now about those sides: the Brunswick stew was very good as was the corn on the cob, but the most incredible side is their home made, hand cut, battered onion rings. Undoubtedly the best onion rings enjoyed at any barbecue joint anywhere over the past too many years. But here's a question: why, if the HH folks go to that trouble to make world class onion rings, do they buy and serve, frozen French fries and sweet potato fries? The Brown Shoe Gourmet missed the logic but sure enjoyed the stew and rings. A couple other things separate Hog Heaven from the pack: great freshly fried pork skins - a great appetizer served still sizzling with some spice if you'd like. Very good, reminiscent of the pork skins served free at Atlanta's Twin Smokers. Then, regardless what you order and before you order, a bucket of peanuts on every table (throw the shells on the floor), and with your order, a few strands of delicious mildly pickled onions and pickle slices. This is the way the good Lord meant for barbecue to be... not some part of a faceless chain trying to capitalize on America's hunger for barbecue, but a local, one of a kind, barbecue joint. For someone who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the perfect barbecue. Hog Heaven isn't it - but it's five star close. read more

It's so hard to write a review for hog heaven. I absolutely love their food. The bbq is my favorite in lagrange and probably surrounding areas as well. The sweet potato with the honey butter.... the okra... so good. My mom loves the brisket too. However, so many things are wrong here. First off, it's nasty. So unclean that we pick it up and take it home sometimes. Last time we went, the chair was so ripped I couldn't sit down, I switched my chair out. The menu was disgusting (it always is here) and the table cloth had bbq sauce all over it, which I didn't notice til I sat down and it got on my clothes bc I pulled up to the table. The service is .... what it is. They're usually young and I don't blame them, I think the owner is the problem. He's been rude to us and some other people we know before, I highly doubt he trains or cares at all what the servers do. They're nice, just usually don't know the answers to whatever you ask and usually seem a little hectic even when there's just 3 or 4 tables. They also serve a plate full of stuff on a tiny little plate. Probably to save dishes, but it's hard to eat like that. Ask for extra. Based on cleanliness and service this is a 1 star place, but I like the food and try to overlook the probable horrible sanitizing standards of the kitchen and enjoy the bbq. read more

The location is fine and the parking is adequate. The ambiance is what one would expect in a small town BBQ joint. The service was friendly. It took 24 minutes from the time I placed my order until the food arrived, but staffing is an issue everywhere. County music played in the background. It was neither too loud or too soft. I ordered a cup of Brunswick stew, fried okra, coleslaw, and potato salad. The stew was inedible, the okra was from a pre-battered frozen bag most likely purchased from Sysco, the potato salad was flavored with pickle juice but little other than mayo and potatoes, and the coleslaw was meh. The food was not even served on a plater. I normally visit an establishment twice before posting a review, but I cannot do this again. I paid over twenty dollars, including tip for very bad food. It had been years since I visited this place and honestly only tried it this week due to location. The first disappointment is the visual dirt and disrepair. Our bench seat was severely ripped and we should not have been seated there. My 4 year old refused to sit on it and had to sit on my lap. Then we opened the menu and good grief at the prices for their below average food! $14 for 4 severely overcooked and dry chicken fingers with fries. $12 for the smallest bbq sandwich I've ever seen in my life. When I asked for Buffalo sauce i was given a watery bbq sauce. The filth on all of the floors and surfaces are just layer on layer of gunk and dust. I can't imagine frequenting this place and overlooking that. Was pleased to see an option to pay online on the bill then it wouldn't load after 3 attempts. I will not return. read more

Had the smoked sausage sandwich and turnip greens. Also got the pork skins. Skins were nothing special - typical bagged pork skins from the grocery store warmed and sprinkled with seasoning. so just came to hog heaven to pick up our deep fried turkey that we do every year. I don't know who's in charge of this this year but it is really messed up. They bring out the wrong turkey they brought at a smaller turkey that was smoked. Then we're being told that it can't be carved because they don't have the time even though we asked for it. normally I would vouch for these people that if you wanted a fried turkey for Thanksgiving this is the way to go. Now I'm saying might be better to try doing it yourself or find somebody else cuz these guys do not have their stuff together, now just got told by I think he's a manager, dad since his best is not good enough and we asked for a discount because everything was so messed up, that he does not want us coming back. 10/10 do not recommend. We are from out of town and attempting to go to a local restaurant with kids. The service was insanely slow with only 3 other tables of 2-3 people each. The food took forever to come out but at least was hot. Food was ok but nothing worth leaving The Great Wolf Lodge for unfortunately. It's really dark in there, similar to an old bar. None of the staff greet anyone or even welcome/goodbye at all. It was truly a painful experience sadly. Seems more like a dying restaurant that wants to fail. read more

Been going there a long time, however it has changed over the years. The owner currently tries to make things as good as possible considering the way things are in our world. The food is very good. The brisket is excellent, the pork plate is excellent,. They have wine on the menu, and over the last few months when I went they never had it or they had it one out of three times. Then I was told that even though it's on the menu they don't offer it anymore. I think that it would be nice if they would clean their menus. But I have to say that it's my favorite barbecue. And you have to realize that the sign out front that says they had catfish does not apply to Hog Heaven. Real good BBQ. Real real good BBQ. Had the brisket sandwich and my friend had the brisket platter. Owner came out to chat with us and find out what was "wrong with us". Apparently, if you're from the South, you're supposed to have the pulled pork. I violated the rule happily, though, and the owner was totally ribbing us. Best thing I had was the fresh pork skins. The pulled pork was like the dried ends of the pork. Like it had been sitting in the warmer all day. It was tiny pieces. It was my first time and probably last time there. I also don't like my drink to go dry and took awhile for server to come check on us and the place wasn't busy at all. We went twice in one week-- last week because my SO works near by. First time the waitress was so rude, distant, almost a racist type vibe-- no lie! The food was great though! Brunswick stew was hot and BBQ sandwich and ribs were pretty good. The mac n cheese was dry and tasteless. Not good. The salad was good once we asked for cheese and doctored it up. The second time we went the service was so much better. New waitress with a better attitude so we are happy about that. This time the food was not good. I only got the Brunswick stew and crackers because it was great earlier that week. This time it was room temperature! Is this the same restaurant I visited two days ago? Yup, the peanuts are still everywhere... Needless to say, consistency is a major problem here and you've got to get the right waitress is you want to enjoy your visit to this restaurant, and well, feel comfortable in your own skin.... Ok - we went here for lunch and I was surprised that the place was hopping AND we were still able to get seated right away. It's one of those places where you eat the shelled nuts and dispose of the shells on the floor - sorry I just can't get comfortable doing that, but my colleagues helped me fit in! The menu was fairly extensive and had LOTS of meat items - I went with the Port Plate with two sides, which were two sides too much. Not wanting either of the dressings - the waitress brought over a hot (temperature) dressing just for me - AMAZING! She said it was too expensive to always have it out, but she thought I'd like it - I think she knew I wasn't from the south because I didn't have that southern accent :) At any rate - I have to give it 5 stars for service - 4 stars 4 food flavor (it was a tiny bit dry) and 3 stars for cleanliness (it was a bit sticky). Value was right up there along with ample parking. Nice touch was the menus were colored by children or adults who cannot color well. Used to love this place so much , went there almost 2-3 times per month. Always got the pig ears which are baked potatoes stuffed with chicken and cheese or the smoke chicken salad. Last several time the potatoes were over cooked and hard. The salad had literally 1/4 of a cup of chicken on it. I ordered the jumbo grilled chicken sandwich without pickles or tomatoes. What was supposed to be on the sandwich was grilled chicken, cheese, peppers, onions, and lettuce. When I opened the container for my sandwich I was extremely disappointed to find there was only lettuce and grilled chicken. I also ordered two sides, a Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes, after arriving to the establishment I was told they have no potatoes so I get another Mac and cheese. After being handed my food, which is placed awkwardly in the bag, one of the containers of Mac and cheese falls out of the bag and onto the floor. One of the employees picks up the container closes the lid and place's it back into the bag with my food. In other words I threw that container out as soon I got home. The Mac and cheese looked very bland ,didn't want to try it because it didn't look appetizing. The only good part about my order was the BBQ cheese fries. Didn't get the cowboy BBQ sauce I ordered with the cheese fries either. I spent almost $40 on food, only to eat about $14 of it. Do not recommend for anyone. read more

If you looking for a super casual restaurant to eat barbecue or steaks this is the place to go. My "go to " is a big baked potato loaded both barbecue, cheese and corn. A variety of sauces fits everyone's taste. I personally like the sweet sauce. Wait staff is friendly but on the nights they have Prime Rib or Ribeye you might have s little wait. No problem you can eat roasted peanuts and throw the shells right in the floor. read more

Good BBQ and free peanuts! Also, probably the biggest salads in LaGrange. What is not known is Tuesday night is Texas Night and they serve the best Brisket Tacos in town that none of the Mexican restaurants can touch. Food was great service was excellent. The only thing negative I can say is I had to hear a female server complaining about someone leaving her a crappy tip. So I tipped her more to see if she would go around bragging about the good tip and of course she did not. Just remember there is a time and place for complaining but never around customers. My husband used to frequent this place as a supervisor for CSX years ago and I never got the opportunity to go, we'll we both went today and it was excellent. There were three choices of sauce, the pulled pork was smokey, flavorful and moist. The pickle chips had an excellent batter on them that we really enjoyed. The chicken leg was very flavorful as were the ribs. (As you can likely guess we got some sort of sample plate that I can't remember the name of) Our waitress Harley was EXCELLENT! She was extremely attentive, polite, capable, knowledgable and easy to talk to. She made sure we never needed anything. Our drinks never came close to being low. She deserves a raise!
