This Countrys in La Grange, Ga. is the worst compared to the Countrys in Columbus, Ga. The egg rolls were over cooked, dark brown and tasted like cooked in old rancid oil. The chopped pork order was dry. The brunswick srew had an had a vinegar taste like they added too much vinegar. The owners and workera in this La Grange Countrys BBQ need to visit the Countrys BBQ in Columbus to get retrained. We have eaten here a few times. Our service was good each time. It's one of the better BBQ options we have tried so far. Stayed at the Marriott and had smelled this delicious aroma every time I went to the parking garage and it had even penetrated into the car. Had lunch there in the way home. Ordered the 'famous' chicken, asked for it to be cut off the bone. Corn on the cob, apples, corn muffin and sweet tea. Got the onion rings as a starter. Onion rings are more like onion straws or petals, which is fine by me. They give a big serving. But they had lemon seasoning/flavor and it just wasn't good. The three of us were starving, but didn't eat many, all agreed that the lemon flavor ruined it. Apples - skins were on and they weren't very sweet. I didn't finish them. Corn cob had the tiniest kernels I've ever seen, except maybe home grown garden corn. Taste was ok. Chicken, flavor was good but there were chewy gristle and cartilage so it kind of turned me off, probably shouldn't have asked for it to be cut off the bone. Cornbread was average. The sweet tea was the best part of the meal. Portion size were generous. They don't have Coke Zero. Excellent service and delicious food! Went around 3pm to avoid a crowd. Got fast service and food. Portion sizes are pretty good, did have one issue though. The child portion of catfish platter was super small and with just one hush puppy. I asked for one more small piece of catfish and then got charged for the adult portion. Oh well. What is there to do for fun and what good food is there to eat in LaGrange? Apparently, not a whole lot. I was hanging out with a friend in the area on a Sunday afternoon, and Country's Barbeque seemed to be one of the ONLY restaurants in the vicinity that was open. "Downtown" LaGrange was like a ghost town on Sunday. I guess the locals there are pretty serious about observing their day of rest. Although the restaurant seemed pretty busy (again, as one of the few restaurants open), we were seated immediately. I took a quick glance at the menu and decided I definitely wanted one of their barbeque platters. After briefly considering the Barbeque Pork Platter, I ultimately settled on the Barbeque Beef Brisket. All platters come with "your choice of light bread, cornbread, or French bread AND two side orders." Strangely enough, mashed potatoes with gravy was NOT one of their options. However, our server informed us that they had it available that day as a "special" side, so I asked for it. Then, I asked if the Brunswick Stew would be counted as a side or if would cost extra. I was surprised to learn that they considered a cup of Brunswick Stew a side with no additional cost, so I got that as well. My friend ordered the sliced Barbeque Pork Platter with cole slaw and fries. It wasn't long before we got our platters. * Barbeque Beef Brisket Platter ($10.29) - Let me start by stating that I'm not an expert on BBQ, specifically Southern BBQ. But I have tried some very good beef brisket in Atlanta, and I hate to say it, but Country's version just wasn't good. The slices were kind of thin and the meat was dry. At least it came with this BBQ sauce called "Shoop sauce," which made it taste a whole lot better. The mashed potatoes with gravy was good (who can mess that up?), and the Brunswick Stew was pretty good, too. It's too bad the sides were better than the BBQ. =( The "French bread" I ordered didn't look or taste like it, but it was soft and tasty. The cole slaw my friend ordered ended up being some strange, pickled/vinegary version instead of the usual mayo. Fortunately, our server had no problem exchanging it for another side - baked beans. I tried some of it and thought it was decent. The sliced barbeque pork was "OK," but not much better than the beef brisket. Overall, Country's Barbeque gets 3 stars for having "OK" food, being open on Sunday, and their friendly service. Our server was as polite as can be, but she didn't really check on us to see if we needed anything else. I had to flag her down to get some more Shoop sauce to moisten and flavor my dry brisket. This place is true southern barbecue and while it's not the absolute most delicious BBQ I've ever had, it is comfort food that sure hits the spot! Portions are large and prices are very reasonable. Lots of sides to choose from and covers the classic range of BBQ items. It's definitely a kid and family friendly place, especially since almost every menu option can be a kids meal at half the size and price which is really nice. The drinks are huge and free refills on many of them, including to-go! Staff is super friendly, helpful, and attentive.
