So grateful that I called Hoblin! My 1927 home had three doors with damaged mechanisms that my contractor and handyman couldn't fix, and nobody makes the replacement parts anymore. I really wanted to like this local business, but they seem to be doing their best to get bad reviews. I hired Paul for a really routine re-keying: it was a slow, expensive, and rude experience, but I want to support my neighbors on Garth Road, so I didn't say anything assuming it was a bad day. Then I had to have a second experience with them: The lock started sticking more and more, to the point where I was concerned the key would snap off. I called him, he hung up on me mid-question (saying his wife would call me back to schedule things). I called back and he sent me to voicemail; at that point I got fed up. By the time his wife called me back: - I requested quotes from Yelp - Another locksmith reached out, gave a quote - That new locksmith showed up, replaced the lock entirely, and spent time shaping the lock according to the shape of the doorframe. He was also polite and friendly to talk with! - He charged less than 1/2 the price for *all* of this than Paul's routine re-keying. So by the time Paul's wife called me back, I started to say "look, I don't need your services, someone already fixed it for me". She got incredibly defensive, to the point of ranting about how the super of a co-op was recently fired, and something about an affair? It was weird, she hung up, then immediately called me back (off to voicemail with her!) and I resolved to write this review. What the heck. Close by, walking distance , parking meters in front. They carry majority of keys, fast service and quick. Keys are made well. Prices are good and reasonable . Hours are 12-5pm but they open at 2pm. The last few times I passed by to see if they open at 12, no luck , but at 2pm yes . there's a number you can call but it's just to kill time . Won't make any different leaving a message . When they do open , someone picks up the call. It's my 1st time going at 12 , usually I would go around 3-4 , so never had an issue waiting at that time. . I had a 90-year-old front door key cylinder that the key could no longer turn. I removed the cylinder and brought it to Hoblin Locksmiths. They had all the necessry part to fix this old cylinder. They opened the cylinder, replaced springs and pins while I waited so that the refurbished cylinder functioned smoothly with the same key - so I didn't need to have new keys made to give to family members. Service was great, it took 30 minutes. The owners are professional, knowledgeable, courteous and the cost reasonable. I would certainly use them again. read more

Even before I had the keys to my new home I had reached out to inquire about making an appointment to reset a lock and get copies of the new keys and what I received in return was knowledgeable and super friendly service. Paul gave me instructions on what I needed to do on my end (take pictures of my lock and key) and he did the rest. He responded to every single one of my emails and showed up right on time the day of my appointment and was in and out in no time (all while sharing some of his locksmith stories). These are not nice people...we were moving in and new;they took full advantage...I paid almost $500, and did not even get a new drop lock, only a new cylinder which the "owner" claims was all I ordered on the phone...he was there installing it and I had little choice...they take no credit cards, had to Zelle in $200 to have keys ready when he got there, and he would not even hand me the keys until I gave him the check! A new drop lock costs about $17.00,,,,,, and they could easily have brought a new brand new one, even for the aesthetics of it on the inside, these were nasty "cut throat people" to deal with and a totally unpleasant experience! read more

He installed two new deadbolts, changed two French door locks and installed a slide lock for our basement door (that I added while he was here). Critical: Professionalism, Punctuality Highly unprofessional. I had some keys made and it went fine so I called to arrange a repair on a European front door lock After going back and forth on arranging an appointment the time came and was canceled two hours after the appointment time. Excuse given was that his supplier didn't carry parts any more, which is just ridiculous. The parts are readily available on the internet. Paul is very nice to work with but the women who helps him ( his wife?) has problems. She cannot listen or pay attention at all and interrupts and diverts constantly. In trying to arrange a simple appointment I learned, unsolicited, about the rent they pay in Scarsdale, their internet advertising issues and getting calls for service in NJ, a three year old grandson who often stays with her, the quality of cell service with different providers and locations. I think Paul tries to cover for her but. It simply does not work. I spent hours arranging and waiting for a simple house call that never happened. It's tough running a small "mom and pop" business, I know, but they should do better. read more

I wanted to like this bickering older couple, I really did. I called before I came and Paul, the owner, said it would take a few minutes to make a copy of a set of 5 keys. When I dropped them off, Paul's wife told me to return in 15 minutes as there was one customer ahead of me. I did not walk out with an extra set of keys until OVER ONE HOUR later. Paul's wife seemed to talk more than she worked and she made a copy of the wrong key after I repeatedly gave her clear instructions. Paul came back and finished the job, but even with Paul I had to explain a couple of times what I needed ( two SEPARATE set of keys so I could give one set to my property manager). Not sure why they both seemed so confused; maybe it was an off day for them. But the worst part was at the end-- my bill came to $36.08. I had a $20 bill and a credit card ( no debit card). Learned they did not take credit cards but that they take Zelle payments ( this business has no website so you don't know this beforehand). I told them I could Zelle them the entire amount when I got home ( which I did) and pick up my keys the next day, but Paul's wife became irate and demanded I immediately give them the $20 bill and Zelle the rest later. I told her that it was not as convenient but that I could do that, and I did-- I gave them the $20, and Zelled them the balance as soon as I got home. Despite this, SHE ACCUSED ME OF REFUSING TO PAY, WHICH IS COMPLETELY UNTRUE. Her behavior was overly dramatic, immature and entirely unprofessional. Because of this, I will not be returning as a customer. I think Paul and his wife are probably good people that had off day, but there is never an excuse to treat customers unprofessionally. read more

I needed keys made for various doors, desks, filing cabinets for a new office space in Scarsdale. The hardware store closest to my office could make most of the keys, but directed me to Hoblin's for a specialty key. I should have gone there first as they did a FANTASTIC job on the keys. Most new keys feel "sticky" when you put them in, but the ones Hoblin made glided right in. The service was prompt, friendly and the price was reasonable. When I had another key to be made, I went back and after asking if there were any supermarkets in the area, Marsha literally walked me across the street to a fantastic grocer, introduced me and got us some sample fruit! THAT is service! I notice many of the reviews on here are fairly polarized. It seems like a couple people were having a bad day. That's not Hoblin's fault. I will definitely be back and recommend this place to others. On a side note, they also happen to have a small VHS collection for sale as well as some delicious gluten free, vegan Raw Revolution bars, which are tasty and hard to come by! read more

Had a very old lock and went there to get a cylinder, needless to say my lock installation abilities are not that good. In fact they are terrible. Came back af 4pm on a Friday to schedule an appointment for the locksmith (Paul) to come out. Explained what was going on and he headed over to my house and changed out the lock in minutes.
