Wow. This place is amazing. Most authentic Vietnamese food I've had outside of Vietnam. The place is bustling with activity because the locals know they have something great in their backyard. They make their own tofu and it is fantastic. The banh mi is only $5 and perfectly made. read more

Authentic Vietnamese food, but don't expect much in terms of greeting since it's a small, no-frills spot. There are a few tables to sit, but it can feel a bit crowded with family members hanging out in the space. We got five sandwiches because, yes, they're that good--and the bonus of getting one free is always a win! My first visit wasn't the best, though, as the service was pretty minimal. The guy just took my order and that was it. However, tonight the experience was much better. The woman behind the counter was incredibly sweet. She asked if I planned to eat right away or take it to go, so she could pre-make the sandwiches and keep the veggies on the side. I dined at Hoang Tofu on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 1 pm. Hoang Tofu is certainly a hole in the wall type establishment offering various Vietnamese dishes including pho, bun bo hue (spicy beef noodle soup), and banh mi, banh cuon/uot (rice crepe), and many more. It is a small place with very few tables, so I would not count on dining in if it's busy. I had a bowl of bun bo hue and a banh mi. Several times in the past I've had the bun bo hue, and the meat had tasted old. But this time, the meat tasted okay. So be aware that there are some consistency issues with meat quality in the bun bo, and potentially other noodle soups. The banh mi tasted good and is excellent for the price. There is a coconutty essence in the banh mi that is quite unique. Although Hoang Tofu's food tasted pretty authentic and decent by Vietnamese standards, I think it lacks restaurant quality. I think Hoang Tofu has more potential as a catering/ordering to-go business than a sit-in dining experience not only because there are very few tables for diners to eat in, but their service leaves much to be desired. The old folk running the front isn't a very patient guy and seem to not like answering "stupid" questions. Don't get me wrong, I think the food gets great reviews by the Vietnamese locals and there's a lot to try here, but I would not expect good service. A solid 3/5 stars. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a long, long time. My friends were visiting from Thailand and were craving Vietnamese food so the opportunity came. When we arrived, there was another Vietnamese couple eating. I grabbed a table and sat for a bit. There is a banh mi menu at the front of the store and the rest of the items are taped up against a glass cabinet to the left of the restaurant. We ordered the #1 cha dac biet and #4 thit nuong. Then we ordered 2 bowls of pho, 1 bowl of bun rieu, 1 bowl of banh cuon, and 1 bowl of banh hoi heo quay. They ran out of banh hoi and asked me if they could serve it with banh cuon which we were fine with. Then we ordered 1 sugar cane and 2 Thai teas. The baguettes were good. My friends enjoyed them as well as their pho. The banh cuon was good and the heo guay was crunchy. I could NOT eat my bun rieu. Everything about it was inedible- from the noodles to the rieu. I would not recommend to order this. It's my favorite noodle soup so I was so shocked. This is the only item I would never order again. I've been back a few times to order baguettes for the family. The French bread is buttery and flaky and I saw several customers just coming in and ordering baguettes so they have got to make them fresh in house. Fans of the bread! There is sit down dining but it is a small place, so takeout is a good option. The food is delicious, and by all observable I could make, very authentic. This is a place I will definitely consider when doing tours of the Charlotte Pike area. The staff I interacted with spoke limited English, but there was nothing lost in communication. Was heading back to Kansas from Nashville and wanted to surprise everyone with some good Bahn mi, sadly these was a huge language barrier on some of the orders. Luckily that was corrected before we left. They had fresh rambutan, sugar cane juice, and much more. The kitchen even makes some delicious stews and noodles. 10 hours later getting back to Kansas, we ate the sandwiches. Since we took it to go they graciously packed the vegetables on the side; they do ask as well if you want them in or on the side. Having ordered the special sandwich #1 we were all sad to bite into it and there was no pate or head cheese. That's what really makes the banh mi stand out from other sandwiches. The bbq pork sandwich was disappointing as well, it just didn't have that kick. The sugar cane juice was definitely refreshing. Was disappointed by all fronts on my visit here. Ordered the special, 2 rolls of pepper cha, a Viet coffee, and a Thai tea. The Thai tea was really watered down and generic tasting. The Vietnamese coffee was way too sweet. It was more of a bac xiu* than a cà phê sua đá. But onto the sandwiches. I expected the sandwich to have head cheese, and pate, which đac biet sandwiches usually have and THIS DIDN'T. *TEARS* What it did have instead was char siu pork, and it also came with a thinner version of char siu sauce instead of the regular soy sauce you'd find in a sandwich. The bread and meat were both on the dry side and the veggies that came with it were meh in that it was mainly shredded carrot and very little daikon, and it was also kind of shady on the cilantro. I'd say their version of the đac biet is a Viet version of the po'boy. I would gladly pay $5 a sandwich if it came with all the fixings. It tasted so much better when I got home and added my own paté, head cheese, some kewpie mayo, and good ol Maggie seasoning. The total for my order came out to $50, so it was very easy on the pocket. For $3.25 a sandwich, there was a decent amount of meat. It's a solid value, overall. *I apologize for the lack of, or completely butchered, accent marks. I specifically asked if anyone had a recommendation for banh mi in Nashville that serves pate in the sandwich, and I was recommended to try Hoang Tofu. There have been too many times that I've ordered banh mi in Nashville and have been severely disappointed that some or several of the main components of a banh mi are missing. I'm Lao, and in Lao we call banh mi "kow-jee pate" which literally translates to "pate bread," so the fact that I get served banh mi without pate makes me very sad. It's a critical element of the sandwich and adds a unique richness. All that is to say, Hoang Tofu DOES put pate in all of their sandwiches (except probably the tofu one - I didn't clarify). I only ordered two sandwiches to try, #1 cha dac biet (special) and #4 BBQ pork. The French bread is buttery and flaky, and just crusty enough to not tear up the roof of my mouth when biting into it. Y'all know what I mean. Both sandwiches had pate, cilantro, cucumber, mayo, Maggi seasoning, and pickled carrots and daikon. The only topping missing was jalapeno, but they absolutely nailed the rest (especially daikon and Maggi). The #1 had almost all the meats expected, but no headcheese, but maybe Nashville's not the market for that. The #4 BBQ pork wasn't really barbecued or grilled, so it lacked that charred flavor, but still good overall. They also serve a few other noodle soup dishes like pho and bun rieu, but I did not try them. My boyfriend tried the pho, and as a pho addict, he said it was good. As others mentioned, Hoang Tofu also sells other items that you can grab and go. I also saw them bringing in fresh tofu, so I assume that you can buy tofu here too. I went home with some steamed sticky rice with mung bean and pork wrapped in banana leaf, one of my favorites. Will definitely be back for this as well as the buy 5 get 1 free banh mi deal! I highly recommend their Banh Mi and for the knock out price you will get some tasty food. They have a limited menu but given their popularity, seems like Hoang Tofu does it well. The boba was delicious and seemed like real taro was used, but they had no pearls. So it was essentially a taro shake with crushed ice. The flavor was on point but I wish they just made a smoothie, because i found myself crunching on ice unpleasantly. The previous time I was there (granted a year ago), their air conditioning was not working and they were open but could not offer all that on the menu. Which at least they were honest about. And they still managed to offer the beef bulgogi which was delicious! So kudos on that. The restaurant though clean and well air conditioned could do with a better outlook. They have a huge glass fridge which is clean but so messy and kind of an eyesore. The same with the way food trays were kept at the counter. The service was quick though. Our food and those of other customers came out quick. The place seemed popular as within 30 min there were three other customers for the small space it is.
