Our hotel receptionist said this was the best place in town and it was! Our waitress was very friendly and good at asking if we wanted additions to our order, which we don't mind being offered. Our dinners came with Caesar salad; served in large bowl, and plenty for both. If you want a dinner roll, you have to request it, which we did, and it was good. It came with the entree. My husband ordered a pork chop and baked potato. I ordered their renowned ribs and crispy hashbrowns. I ordered the senior portion which was 3 ribs. Very tender, meaty and saucy. Filling! The team at the Hitching Post are amazing. Last week my husband passed away. I made a reservation for some friends and I to have dinner and share stories at the Hitching Post. My husband propsed there and I asked to sit in the area where he proposed. Upon arrival not only were we sitting near where he proposed by they gifted me this candle and a sweet condolences card. The food was okay but quite honestly it was hard to enjoy because of so many flies landing on me and on my dinner. Seriously, I had to eat with one hand and keep a stack of napkins in my other hand to wave away the flies. It is definitely an ongoing problem. I've been here on more than one occasion, and I forget how an annoyance like that interferes with your ability to enjoy a meal. It makes you wonder what's going on in the back kitchen, and where all these flies are coming from. The service was okay, nothing special. The interior needs a good deep cleaning. the booth I was in had a cloth back which was stained and fairly filthy. I don't think the property is maintained and this is the responsibility of the owner/manager - I can't fault the wait staff for this. I ordered steak and shrimp with an iced tea and the bill came to just under $40 before the tip. Waitress was a pro at upselling. Asked if we wanted to start with a couple beverages she recommended and finished with dessert recommendations too. She is good at padding the bill! What got my goat is that she charged us 60¢ extra for a 1/2 oz of BBQ sauce my husband asked for to cover the dry brisket sandwich he ordered. This place is supposed to be a BBQ joint! I stopped in here on the recommendation of the front desk clerk at the motel I'm staying at. I was greeted and sat at the bar which I like. Bartender was nice and attentive, got me a beer right away. Since this was my first time, I ask him what he would recommend. He said the steaks and ribs are most popular with customers, so I chose the half rack of ribs with the house salad and choice of potato. Are Caesar salads supposed to be warm? I ate most of it and set it to the side, ordered another beer. My entree came out and I ate the loaded baked potato first... no bad, but bacon was a bit tough. Next the Ribs. Although they fell off the bone, they were just a bit dry for my liking, and there was something very familiar about the sauce. In summary, although the food isn't gonna send you into orbit. I was referred to Hitching Post by another business in town. Called on a Friday for an event for the SMSU football team. Spoke with Tom and asked him if he could feed 135 hungry men in 4 days . He was so polite, provided great food options then emailed me a menu. By Sunday I was able to meet Tom in person and he was ready to go! Just heard from the football team and everything was perfect! Wow this is tough. I've been in here before and always thought well of the place. As a matter of fact tonight we specifically went here because I wanted to go. On the way in I noted the previous 1 star rating and thought... ahh that's a rubbish. I don't know why somebody would have given this place a 1 star rating. We were promptly and pleasantly seated as soon as we walked in. The drink I ordered was good. We got the onion rings as an app which were good. For entree I ordered the ribeye as they had it on special. I ordered it medium. Our server was a little forgetful but generally she did OK. My steak came and it was well past medium into the done category. So I'm disappointed but I became more annoyed when I found noticed that the bottom side of the steak was near black. This wasn't something the cook messed up and didn't notice. He/She obviously found it and put this side down intentionally. Very poor showing. One of the other people in our party had the ribs and I tried them. The ribs were honestly great. They had awesome flavor, not smoky but very tender with a nice coating of partially caramelized BBQ sauce on the outside. Everything else in the meal was 3 - 4 starts. This place was recommended to us by some coworkers, and I was honestly a bit disappointed. The Caesar salad they give you at the beginning was great, but then the rest of my meal was kind of bland. I had the grilled chicken with wild rice and a side of grilled asparagus. Chicken was fine. Rice was super watery and not like any other wild rice I had ever tasted before. I passed after one bite. Solid three - exactly the kind of small town roadhouse food you expect. No surprises and nothing exceptional. The ribs were falling off the bone tender, my dinner partner had the brisket and said it was good. One oddity was the au gratin potatoes were actually hash browns sitting on a blob of processed cheese sauce. Good crisp hash browns but tasteless cheese and definitely not au gratin! We came in late, about 8 o'clock, and even though there weren't many tables, service was quite slow after a prompt seating and drinks. We have been going to the hitching post for many years. They have now raised their prices by three dollars per entrée. I had the ribeye steak, $22.99, which is generally very tender, juicy & tasty. This time it was tough & dry, even though I ordered it rare to medium rare. I know what a ribeye steak tastes & looks like - this did not look like a ribeye. They also took the onion rings off the menus (which were wonderful) & now have onion pedals. My husband tried the pedals, but they were very tough - could not bite them in half. If they're going to raise their prices and give cheaper quality food, we will not continue to patronize this place. This used to be the best place to go out and have a nice dinner, but now I am questioning it. read more

This place makes the garbage you find in the street seem appetizing. I have never come to a restaurant more disgusting than this one. Their "Bison Steak" you pay $16.00 for is a warmed up burger patty that they can't seem to get anything other than harshly burnt. I have frequented the Hitching Post 3 times over the past few years (late 2015-early 2017). The menu items that stick out for me are the barbecue ribs and all the potato dishes. I don't think you can find better ribs within, at least a 50 mile radius. The service has always been prompt and friendly. They always have at least a couple special promotions each week, primarily during the week. The establishment is always very clean and tidy. The salads were fresh each time I visited the Hitching Post. I have tried 2 different wonderful soups, one being chili, and the other one being a ham and potato soup. I have never had to make reservations or stand in line for service. They are always accommodating, even at the last minute. Overall, the Hitching Post is a great to place to bring non-Marshall natives to, as well as Marshall-native that have never experienced the Hitching Post. read more

The company was great and the service was wonderful, but if this had been my first eating at the Hitching Post, I wouldn't be back! On recommendation of one of our party of five, three of us had the beef brisket sandwich. The menu does not say 'smoked' brisket. Maybe in Marshall people assume that is the only way to cook this cut? It does say cheese and mushrooms and I could see they were there. They had absolutely no taste because the smoked flavor of the meat obviously comes from a bottle, not smoking, and the cook was very heavy handed. The fries accompanying the sandwich were unseasoned and slightly undercooked. The three of us were not happy with our choice. The caesar salad with chicken had a generous amount of grilled chicken on a limp bed of romaine. The salad was beautifully garnished with a large amount of cheese, but the cheese is cheap and flavorless. The veggie wrap was flavorful, but the dressing was applied a bit too liberally, making it get soggy quickly. My husband loves ribs and he hasn't found any better than at the Post. I love their steak, walleye, asparagus spears. Onion rings are the best around too. My co-worker and I usually go once every week or two for lunch to get their fajita wraps. USUALLY good. Two ladies were standing at opposite ends of the bar and wouldn't acknowledge us as we waited to be seated. One looked up and said someone will be with you shortly and then proceeded to say "I guess I could seat you."--Not Ok. The other gal recognized us and nodded a hello our way. We ordered our normal- cheese balls to share and a beef fajita and chicken fajita wraps. Normally they are down right delicious. However the beef came back just warm on one side, (they cut wrap in half), and the other half the meat was ice cold. I asked for it to be warmed up just a bit-noting I had 15 minutes left before I had to be back to work. Of course, versus only taking a couple minutes they heated it up for over 5 minutes where I couldn't even touch it, it was so hot. The gal that had recognized us said is it hot enough for you now? I said, I can't even touch it and she just walked away. Our waiter also avoided our table the whole time and never refilled our drinks till I had to wave down another. The first gal who seated us was busy talking with a friend the whole time we were there. When we got our tab, no discount or coupon or voucher "for next time" was there.
