This was concerning, so I visited my primary care physician on a Wednesday morning. He was concerned if there was a possibility of a detached retina and encouraged me to get an eye exam appointment in the next 24-48 hours. He suggested an opthalmologist and sent an urgent referral. He said to call the opthalmologist office to schedule right away. He also said that if I couldn't get an appointment to try an optometrist because if it's a detached retina, it was critical. I called the opthalmologist office and they said they did not receive the referral and that they'll call me when they do. So my next call was to the HMO's referral coordinator to ask what are my next steps. They found my referral and said they'll send it right away and that the opthalmologist office should have the referral in about 20 minutes. I called the opthalmologist office about an hour later and got their voice mail. Left a message that my primary care physician said this was urgent that I needed to make an appointment as soon as possible. I called again on Thursday and was told when their intake coordinator receives my referral, that she will call me. I called my optometrist but also had to leave a message. Needless to say, I got to see my optometrist on Friday and the eye exam didn't show a detached retina. I did finally receive a call from Family Eyecare Associates on Monday afternoon, and since I didn't need to visit, there was no need to schedule an appointment. Bottom line, I'm sure this business is busy, but does a referral marked Urgent make a difference? Who knows.

Depending on what building you go to there is a variety of waiting rooms. All clean and dimly lit (for eye care). On my last visit, Dr. Devries took the time to help me by calling the Rx Rep and asking where the most affordable place to purchase it would be. That's not something I've experienced anywhere else! Today's visit took over 2 1/2 hours, and we were told that appointments here typically take 2 1/2 to 3 hours. If that is the standard, patients should be informed when they schedule so they can plan their day accordingly. Spending several hours in the office for a routine injection appointment is excessive. The waiting room felt as crowded and slow-moving as the California DMV. Better scheduling and communication about expected wait times would make a significant difference to the overall patient experience.

I was in such pain, as anyone who has had Shingles knows; but everyone in the office treated me like family from the first appointment. Dr. Hsueh took my hand, and told me "I will never abandon you." So I have been going there since 2014, and continue to be impressed with how compassionate everyone is there. And his technician, Shirley, is the best! She performs all tests necessary with patience and intensity, skills not learned in schools. She is extremely knowledgeable in everything she does, and I am honored to know all the staff there. Sure, they are now in what was once an animal clinic. And it does take time and lots of money to change that sign (!) When I had my first appm't at that location, I can say I pre-judged the place. But when I went inside, I was blown away! It is bright and airy, with lots of modern display cases for eyeglasses. There's a beautiful marble counter that wraps around, but my favorites are the sliding barn doors on each examination room. The staff are still wearing masks, even though the mandate has been lifted. But I certainly respect that, as I would not like to hear of anyone there getting any kind of illness. Oh, and there's plenty of parking in the back, where the entrance is, and most of it is in the shade. Dr. Patrick Hsueh is the most professional, and the kindest, doctor I have had the pleasure of knowing. And once you meet him, and get to know him, you will see a compassionate, humble man, who I hope never retires! She consistently told me that she would send a referral to another place that does surgery. The surgery place said they never received anything so I proceeded to ask Susie if she could send it again (assuming that there were some technical difficulties). She "sent it" again and once again the other place said nothing was sent. I had to keep asking her to actually send it until eventually the lady changed her story and said actually she can't send a referral because they need need to have a record of me coming into their office for a certain period of time. This was a near month long process and she completely wasted my time, lied to me TWICE and showed how little she cares about her patients.

Sorry, but being a slightly overweight pre-teen does not cause pustules on your tonsils or a sore throat to the point where you cannot swallow water. You don't have to go to medical school to know that! Dr. McKenzie also prescribed a medication to my husband which ultimately would have accelerated his blood clot condition by increasing his hematocrit. The second opinion and the third opinion concurred that taking that medication Dr. McKenzie prescribed was a bad idea for my husband. Needless to say we have a new doctor now and my husband's heath has substantially improved over when he was with Dr. McKenzie.
