This was concerning, so I visited my primary care physician on a Wednesday morning. He was concerned if there was a possibility of a detached retina and encouraged me to get an eye exam appointment in the next 24-48 hours. He suggested an opthalmologist and sent an urgent referral. He said to call the opthalmologist office to schedule right away. He also said that if I couldn't get an appointment to try an optometrist because if it's a detached retina, it was critical. I called the opthalmologist office and they said they did not receive the referral and that they'll call me when they do. So my next call was to the HMO's referral coordinator to ask what are my next steps. They found my referral and said they'll send it right away and that the opthalmologist office should have the referral in about 20 minutes. I called the opthalmologist office about an hour later and got their voice mail. Left a message that my primary care physician said this was urgent that I needed to make an appointment as soon as possible. I called again on Thursday and was told when their intake coordinator receives my referral, that she will call me. I called my optometrist but also had to leave a message. Needless to say, I got to see my optometrist on Friday and the eye exam didn't show a detached retina. I did finally receive a call from Family Eyecare Associates on Monday afternoon, and since I didn't need to visit, there was no need to schedule an appointment. Bottom line, I'm sure this business is busy, but does a referral marked Urgent make a difference? Who knows.

When my son had the 'incident' we were a little confused about what to do. it was quite serendipitous that we already had appointment with Dr. Hong for two days later. He was accidentally shot in the eye with the desiccated Orby, and was fortunate enough that somebody on site had a family member that worked in an optometrist office. We got in to see her, and was immediately referred to Dr. Hong. Fortunately, there was no waiting as we had an appointment with her the next day. The office is wonderful, it is pediatric so clearly serves all of the youngsters. The staff put you at ease immediately, and there is plenty for the young ones and littles to do. The assistant that called us back was just wonderful. My son was quite nervous and scared, at 15. He would never admit that, and she was just very gentle and calming. Dr. Hong herself is amazing! She was so very thorough, disseminated a lot of information that was easy to understand. Made sure that he understood what was going on and understood what he needed to do to care for his eye. She explained everything so well, and really put us both at ease. An eye I injury can be really scary, especially to somebody so young with a lot of years ahead. She sent us out with clear directions, he was really good and following them. They had us back for a follow up and everything was looking better. We have yet to see her one more time for a final follow up, and hopefully close this file. For something that started out so scary, Dr. Hong put it at ease, and turned it into a far better experience than it could have been.

Their patient facing services are done professionally and with kindness and care. However, their attention to detail lacks. First, they are listed on my insurance website as an in network doctor. When I arrived and got through my appointment and was then looking at frames, they told me they do not take vision insurance. This was not communicated to me prior to my appointment, thus resulting in a larger fee than I should have paid for my standard co-pay. Second, I did not order frames through this doctor office considering the price was a little high for off brand. I instead purchased glasses online with the prescription that the office provided me. When I received my glasses from another company, they were horribly wrong. They gave me double vision and made me feel as though I was cross eyed. I confirmed the prescription that I entered online for the glasses with the prescription provided to me by the doctors office and everything matched. I called my previous optometrist office and obtained my last prescription given to me about three years ago. That prescription was significantly different from the prescription provided by this doctors office, more so than a typical decrease in eyesight or graduation of vision, the numbers were severely different. Not to mention when I arrived for my appointment I was shuffled from one room to another to another and back again because the assistant giving my eye exam could not see properly in the lighting. I question whether or not they are skilled enough to be performing eye exams and I'm glad I was not dilated at the time.

We have lived the fallout for the ten years since. This doctor will operate on anyone willing to cut him a check. Regardless of whether or not they are a candidate for Lasik. His office is an assembly line. You are just a number. They care not at all about your well being. Lasik is a voluntary procedure- you sign a waiver saying this. That's fine. You accept the risk as we did. But you trust a medical doctor to inform you if it is reasonable to proceed. My husband was never a candidate for the procedure yet Rothman operated anyway. After my husband's failed procedure, Rothman recommended additional surgeries. Not to save my husband's sight. But instead to save his own ass. This made matters worse and created a situation where his corneas were unstable. When we fought them on the corrections, we were immediately given a full refund. No questions asked. A paltry sum in exchange for destroying my husband's sight- a builder and father of two. But with anything that is elective, that is your recourse. We have lived through ten years of over two dozen additional surgeries to try to save his corneas. We've seen specialists at UC Davis for scleral lenses to correct the corneal ectasia caused by Dr Rothman and we are currently doing everything possible to avoid complete corneal transplants due to this doctors incompetence. Other trained surgeons in the Reno area call the patients unfortunate enough to endure surgery at Lasik of Reno "Rothman's Rejects". And no I'm not kidding. Some surgeons and doctors in this area will refuse to see you if you've let him operate on you. Please don't trust these people to touch your eyes.
