    Pork

I tried the pork curry which came out the around $20 dollars. It was quite a large portion! It tasted great, but was I personally found it quite salty and the flavors a bit overwhelming. I felt like it was lacking vegetables although this is supposedly what traditional Japanese curry is like. It does come with 1 pickled onion and a few pickled vegetables. There is also some spicy powder you can add on the table as well as some rice crispies/fried garlic topping. The inside is clean and service was very fast. You order and pay when you enter before sitting down.

This is a Japanese curry restaurant from Tokyo. They just grand-opened on 2026-03-09. I ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry ($18.50). You can get extra rice for +$1.00 and a multitude of toppings for extra cost. The service was good. The chicken katsu was very delicious. The batter was very crispy and the chicken was tender. The curry was, as they described in they slogan, "sweet first, spicy later". They was was at a mild to medium level. The rice was well cooked. One dish was enough for lunch or dinner. There is a jar of Tenkatsu at each table. They look like Rice Krispie but is made of tempura and garlic. You would sprinkle them on top of your curry and they were delicious The only negative side was their fork and spoon had water droplet dry spots on it. There is a self-order kiosk but it is for takeout orders only. There is adequate indoor seating including counter seating for four people.. You order at a counter but they will bring your food to your table. There is lively Japanese music playing in background at a medium volume. They sell their brand of curry in small cans. They don't accept cash payment. There is free WiFi. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible, but there is no door-open button. Thrre are two gender-neutral washrooms, but they are not wheelchair accessible. There is paid neighbourhood street parking. Review 2026-044

    Crunchy beads and spicy shaker

My main experience with Japanese curry is the palm oil blocks you melt at home in some broth with carrots, potatoes, and some kind of protein. It tastes OK, but... So when I saw all the press releases! Famous Japanese chain! First Toronto location! Japan loves us! Woo! The restaurant is close to College station, and there is a ramp you can take to get to the entrance. It's not a wide entrance, though, so not the best accessibility, and there wasn't an accessible washroom that I saw. It's also very small. I didn't take any photos of the interior because the old white guy snapping photos of young Asians wouldn't have enhanced anyone's dining experience. What I will say that there were six two seater tables, six chairs at the front counter, and four chairs for people to wait to get their takeout or get their table. Overall very clean and bright, nothing spectacular. You order at the counter and pay, then get a number to display where you're sitting. I have never had nanban chicken curry, so I thought I'd give it a try. There are two sizes, and the only difference is the amount of rice you get with your order. I went for the smaller size, and it was enough for me. The chicken was thigh meat with no tendons or blobs of fat, and was nice and moist and tender. The batter was thin and crispy and not greasy. And the curry was slightly sweet, with a bit of a spice after kick, rich and deep. Looking it up on my phone, nanban sauce is something like tartar sauce. This one also had diced onions. It tasted fresh and like tartar sauce, but I enjoyed my bites more without it in the mix. So a personal note, nothing bad about the sauce or the kitchen. There was a tiny amount of pickled vegetables on the plate, maybe just to say that pickled vegetables were included. A bit underwhelming. There were two shakers, one with little crunchy beads of dough (which I'm sure have a much nicer Japanese name), and one with a fiery looking powder. The crunchy little beads added some nice texture contrast to the tender chicken and perfectly cooked rice. I loved that the spice shaker had small, medium, and large holes so you could control the heat level. For me, a little bit of this went a long way, but I would use both again on my next visit. Service was great. I got a glass of tap water and a refill without me needing to ask for it, and generally cheerful and efficient. People were jamming in the whole time I was there, so I appreciate the challenge to good service when the hype is running strong Not a place to linger around for a long time. But if you want a quick plate of curry with chicken, or tempura shrimp, or cheese, or no additions, or...This is a great place for a quick nosh.

Hinoya Curry located near College and Yonge serves up Japanese style curry in a casual environment. A popular curry chain from Japan with many stores, Hinoya recently opened yesterday, marking their first Toronto store. I actually remember having Hinoya Curry in Tokyo a few years ago when I travelled there. Little did I know back then when I stumbled upon Hinoya Curry in Tokyo that I would be eating it again in Toronto 2 years later! Menu wise, Hinoya Curry specializes in Japanese curry, which is slightly sweet but not spicy. Their menu boasts about 12 different curries, the most popular being tonkatsu, chicken katsu, and chicken nanban curry. There are also vegetarian options including a spinach curry, vegetable curry, or a simple curry and rice. For each of the curries, you can either order a regular size or a large size (you probably get more rice in the larger size). You are also able to add extra toppings to your curry including extra proteins, a soft-boiled egg, more curry sauce, etc. For beverages, they have bottled teas, juice, pop, and water. I came by Hinoya Curry for a late lunch today. The storefront is fully accessible (there's a ramp if you cannot manage stairs). As you enter, you order at the cashier and are handed a number as you select any of the seats available in the shop. There are around 16 seats for customers. If you decide not to purchase a drink, staff will come by to give you a glass of water. On the tables there is also a container of crispy puffed rice with some dried garlic you can add to your curry. If you'd like to order take out you can either do so using the kiosk or with staff. They take cashless payments only. I decided to order a regular tonkatsu curry ($18 - it is a bit pricey). After ordering, I made my way to a table. My curry arrived on my table in about 5-10 min, where it was piping hot. Along with the pork tonkatsu, curry sauce, and rice, the dish also came with some fukujinzuke pickles and a small rakkyo (Chinese onion). For lunch, the regular portion was already a huge portion! I was feeling extra hungry today and devoured the curry and tonkatsu, however, I was super full after all the food. The curry itself had a slight sweetness to it followed by a bit of spice (however, not crazy spicy). The piece of pork tonkatsu was still crispy despite the fact that the curry sauce was placed on top of it. The rice was cooked well. A delicious curry - best for those cold chilly days! Service wise, staff were friendly and attentive. They made sure to come around to make sure I was enjoying my curry as well as refilled my water if it was running low. They all shouted a greeting in Japanese as I left the restaurant. I mentioned that I had Hinoya Curry a few years ago in Tokyo and they were grateful that I came by today to try it again in Toronto. Overall, a great new Japanese chain restaurant specializing in Japanese curry. A definite must try if you are looking to have some delicious curry in the city!

    Chicken Nanban Curry w/fish

Japanese curry is one of my favourite meals, and it will probably be one of the last meals I ask for. Came here on Friday night with my girlfriend for dinner. There was obviously a lineup, but we didn't mind; we understood that they were new, and we definitely arrived at peak dinner time. By the time we got to order, my girlfriend had gotten the Tonkatsu, and I got their Chicken Nanban Curry regular size. I also added a side of fish because, well, I wanted to try it. It was cool that they had both veggie and, I think, beef, but we just stuck with the beef. After sitting, the wait time for the food was pretty quick, and it came hot. Overall, my expectations were blown out of the water. Let me tell you, first off, the amount of rice they gave you was amazing. I love it. Second, the curry was really flavorful, and I enjoyed it a lot. The fish, chicken, and tonkatsu were fried to perfection. I know this sounds so generic with a lot of jibberish, but let me tell you it was worth the wait, and the food was really amazing... I'm just rambling, have a good night, y'all.

Great curry in Toronto. Lots of different variety and customization available. One gripe is the price but the portion is quite large (even for the regular size). Service was good and attentive. The space is a bit smaller but not cramped. The wait was not too bad - would love to see an option to join the waitlist online (without having to go in person) since they already use Yelp for the waitlist

Went on a Sunday around 4pm and it was not busy at all with a few empty tables. I think the dish itself was good. I got the braised beef tendon but after a while, I was craving actual meat texture so maybe I should have gotten something else. Price is similar to getting a ramen so definitely not "cheap". My bill was around $23 including tax and tip for one dish. Service was fine - nothing to write home about it.

Minus one star only for the price :) Came on Saturday at 10:55am, only two other parties in front of me. They opened at 11 and ordered my katsu curry with extra cheese topping and sat at the bar. Food came pretty fast and the curry is hot enough to melt the cheese topping. Excellent flavour profile and a large portion- I took 1/4 of it home. Would come back but kind of steep for curry in Toronto. Definitely wouldn't lineup more than 15 minutes for it.

Went here on their grand opening on March 9. My friend had their curry in Japan and after trying it they told me it tasted just as great! Food: There is a vegetable-based curry and a meat-based curry. I got to try both and they taste delicious! The spices and ingredients that go in the curry make it taste umami, rich and balanced. I got the braised beef tendon curry, it comes with ginger and pickled baby onion. On the table they offer complimentary puffed rice with fried garlic to add to your curry for a crunchy texture. They also provide the Japanese chili sprinkle - Shichimi Togarashi. It's so true that the curry has a subtle sweetness at first and then you taste the spice after. Service & atmosphere: Single tables can be combined to accommodate a group of up to 6-8 people. There is also seats for solo diners. The staff are friendly and give good customer service!

As soon as I saw Hinoya was opening a location in Toronto, I knew I had to stop by as a Japanese curry lover. The interior was quite small, but they managed to squeeze quite a few seats in there. We ordered at the counter and then grabbed a seat, they would then bring the meal to your table. Some of the tables in the middle were super tight to the point where I couldn't even squeeze to sit in it so I had to opt for a corner table in the back. I ordered the tonkatsu curry and it was soo rich in flavour. The only negative was that I thought the price was a bit hefty for the amount you get. I was actually expecting a bigger portion compared to what was served. However, the quality of the curry itself was really good. Definitely a good option for curry if you are in the area.

Now that we are getting some nicer weather, I'm totally in the mood for wandering out and about in the city exploring all these new restaurants that's been opening up around the city. A couple of days ago, we found ourselves downtown and ended up in the Yonge and College area. We found our way to Hinoya Curry just a little bit off of Yonge Street. The set up is a quick eat place where you order at the counter and grab a seat. There were about 6 to 7 tables of 2 along the window. The food came rather quickly upon ordering. We ordered the Nanban chicken curry and tonkatsu curry. The curry was really good. It's got a hint of sweet flavour and you taste the heat after. To me, it wasn't very spicy, which is perfect for me. I really liked the Nanban chicken. The chicken was fried, yet juicy on the inside and topped with tartare sauce. It worked really well with the curry rice. The portion was quite generous also. I ordered the regular size and left with a decent size leftover for a good snack!

It is as good as you would imagine it to be. Being a popular chain in Japan and finally having one here in North America, is amazing. The curry portion is really good, with lots of options to choose from on the menu. I opted for the cheese one today, and I was not disappointment. If you get this one, do note that it does not come with meat, so if you are hoping to have pork, order another one. I love the aesthetic in this restaurant, and the staff is extremely friendly. The only comment I have, is the seating is extremely tight and limited. Its a small space, and getting in and out of the seats in the current layout may serve as an inconvenience. The prices are a bit up there, but given the ingredients used and the taste of the food... definitely worth it!

It's my go-to spot to get my don fix - I love the wide variety of dons (rice bowls) that they offer with various fish and seafood combinations. There are also unique appetizers in the menu, such as Purple Yam Croquettes, Crab Crackers, Braised Bamboo Shoots with Shirasu (immature whitebait fish), and Takowasa (marinated raw octopus pieces, to be eaten with or wrapped in nori / seaweed). Although the dons are the main highlight of their menu (hence the restaurant name), they also offer traditional sushi, sashimi, sushi rolls and sets (similar to other Japanese sushi restaurants). Miso Aburi Scallops were very flavourful - nicely torched, giving the scallops a nice grill / char taste. They came with red and green seaweed, and a bit of fish roe. Large Premium Hana Don contained a good amount of fish and seafood, including a whole abalone, uni, shrimp in the shell, aburi salmon, ikura (salmon roe), salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, yellowtail sashimi, other various fish sashimi, tamago (egg), and a few slices of cucumber on a generous bed of rice. I liked that the rice was a mix of white rice and some type of dark-coloured grains. Unatama Don came with a big piece of unagi and tamago (egg) that were both excellent. The sashimi were all fresh. Okonomiyaki was disappointing but it was sort of expected... for only $9, it was about 99% just flour pan-fried in a patty, without any substantial fillings (unlike real okonomiyaki, which usually contains protein / seafood, cabbage, eggs, and other ingredients). This probably would have been five stars had it not been for the hair. I know this happens on the rare occasion but probably shouldn't if hair nets are worn. If you do try out this place, expect great katsuya.
