First time trying Hinoki. Upon entrance, I was kindly greeted by the manager. She asked if I wanted to sit at the sushi bar or booth. I chose booth! While glancing at the menu, she elaborated how they're new to the maps and that I enjoy my experience. Very kind. Reasonable prices, for an extended Japanese bar. My server Rachel took no hesitation into educating me more about each* menu item, extremely generous of her. I started with the Tanu, hand held fried rice. 10/10. The soft crunch from the rice, with the savory fresh tuna covered in their signature sauce(s) is indescribable. Followed by the salmon, nigiri. The chef personally handed off the plate, which made me feel very special. The precision of the beautifully portioned salmon and rice simply melts in your mouth, meanwhile the flavor gradually exploding like a firework finale. I ended with two classic rolls, simple, yet delicious. Friendly staff and amazing atmosphere. I will definitely be bringing my friends here, when they're in town! They'll love it. read more

Stopped by for lunch to check them out since they are on the expensive side for sushi. Service was good although they have a giant wall in the front blocking staff from seeing you, so you have to walk out a bit to get serviced as no one is manning the host stand. Lunch menu was very limited and also very expensive. The sushi lunch bento was $25 and only included 5 pieces of nigiri, seaweed salad, and 3 pieces of shrimp tempura roll (which was shrimp tempura, asparagus, topped with eel sauce), and miso soup. The sushi quality was alright, but the roll was interesting. For $25 I was expecting more and left hungry. Probably won't be back to check them out for dinner. read more

We were excited to try Hinoki based on promising reviews and the Kinzo association but we left laughing in disbelief because of what a rip off the $85 Omakase was. Courses 1-3 were fine, nothing extraordinary but nothing terrible. Course 4, the Aka Tasting, is where everything went south. When you see the a la carte Aka Menu items there are 4 items, including things like salmon, yellowtail collar, black cod, and japanese mackerel. But we were served ... chicken skewers. While we realize the actual tasting item may vary from the menu, we expected something on par with the menu items. But whatever- we laughed about it because what else can you do. Unfortunately it kept going downhill from there. The next two courses were even more ridiculous. The soup was a very watered down Miso soup. I've had better tasting miso soup as a complimentary item than this. And the dessert served was ice cream Mochi like what you buy in the freezer aisle at HEB. Such a rip off, no wonder there was only 1 other table there at 6:45pm on a Friday night. read more

We loved Imura so were somber to hear it got replaced. Sadly, we still miss Imura after trying Hinoki. I thought the sushi was expensive for the small quantity received. Don't sleep on Hinoki. They have some of the best sushi in DFW. Worth the drive every time. Rolls are elegantly prepared with generous portions of super clean fish. If this restaurant were in Uptown they would be booked a month out. read more

This is a very lowkey spot off of Preston Road where an izakaya was prior to Hinoki taking over the space. Service was great upon walking in. Extra love to the waitress that allowed our daughter to practice her Japanese. I thought the food was on par with its' sister restaurant Kinzo. Have been wanting to try Hinoki since they opened after reading the reviews. Always love trying a new sushi spot. Our server was very friendly. We tried the panko oysters to start. Oysters were good and sauce was tasty. They had a little too much breading and were greasy for my taste, but that's personal preference. I think I prefer raw oysters. They were accommodating and allowed me to order a cumbe wrapped roll off the dinner menu. I definitely wish they had no rice rolls with rice or soy paper. I don't love cucumber wrapped rolls, as they fall apart. We also ordered the salmon roll and eel roll. Everything was very fresh and delicious. I would just recommend some no rice options. read more

Chef Leo (and Chef Shin)... My son and I love (loved) this place (you have helped us many times), but it needs help. We walked in at 6:30 on a Thursday. No one was at the hostess stand when I walked in. I was greeted with someone walking up to me asking if I had a reservation. The restaurant was mostly empty and I said that we would like to sit at the sushi bar. The bar had just 3 seats with a reservation sign. The 3 seats only took up a small part of it. He said that he couldn't help me. I confirmed with him, you can't accommodate me? He said no, and we left. I don't get it. You have space, but can't help me. What a disappointment. We won't be back. I went to Hinoki today and ate their lunch special. It was awesome. Authentic and delicious! The sashimi and sushi was full of flavor and fresh. You can feel the chef's effort in the presentation and preparation - the wasabi is fresh made and the ginger tastes like it is made in-house too. The portion size is very generous - see my photos. The bento box will definitely fill you up. I also ordered the tempura. The shrimp tempura was excellent. The batter was light and cooked to perfection. Atmosphere and decor is great. Got the sushi roll bento box. Didn't like the taste or the consistency of the sushi rolls. They tasted like mush and the flavors seemed off for some reason. BEWARE! If I could give ZERO stars, I would. Service started out ok. Can't even blame the female server and host. The issue is the male sushi rollers behind the bar or whatever they're called. You can see in these pictures what was given to me and my mentee to eat as if we were dogs and not paying customers! We were already waiting for our food (only 2 sushi rolls btw) for almost 20 mins, just for the waitress to come by and tell us that it's going to take a lot longer for our food. I simply asked why because there were only 3 to 4 groups in the whole restaurant that evening. My understanding from her response was that the Caucasian group that came in AFTER us were ordering sashimi that I guess will take some time and skill and they'd rather work on their order. Mind you there were 4 sushi rollers behind the bar so of course I was confused... I asked how much longer it will take because I had to get my mentee back home. 3 to 5 mins later they brought us what you see in the photos. These don't look like anything I saw in the reviews before coming. I was mortified but didn't want to make a scene in front of my mentee who was starving btw. We ate, I paid and left. Regret ever stepping foot in this racist establishment and I'm utterly disgusted with them. I even held on to the menu to possibly order more after trying the first roll. Chef Leo mentioned that some sections of the restaurant are partitioned for a more intimate experience, which makes it perfect for both date nights and family dinners. I dropped by Hinoki after my Pilates class because it was close by and I love sushi. It's a pretty restaurant, nice atmosphere, very clean, the staff were incredibly attentive and friendly, and the food was delicious. I had a bento sushi roll box, shishito peppers, and I also got a volcano roll because I couldn't resist. I sat at the sushi bar, we had great conversation, and they were so kind and fun to talk to. We have been wanting a mid-tier sushi spot in our area and Hinoki definitely delivers. Being a big Kinzo fan, the food has a bit of that flair but with a more modern and laid back take. The rolls we had were great, cold dishes were made with what you can tell is a higher quality fish than you'd get at most of the other local sushi spots, along with the several cold dishes that we tried. Highly recommend the short ribs, very well done here. Nice open concept in the space, and music fits a nice vibe. We sat with our 5 month old and they went out of their way to accommodate space for her and the stroller so we could enjoy a nice meal, great service as well and came by to check on us throughout our time sitting here. Hinoki is the newest sushi spot in Frisco, only open a few weeks but they have a lot of sushi experience! We have been a few times already and love it. The menu is curated by Kinzo's Leo Kekoa, and his amazing wife Irene is overseeing the restaurant. Fresh fish, lots of variety with their raw and cooked food options, and a 6 course tasting menu option for when you just want them to choose what's best :) The interior is clean and modern, with a sushi bar or table seating options for large or small groups.
