Lunch Menu Back
Katherine H.

Stopped by for lunch to check them out since they are on the expensive side for sushi. Service was good although they have a giant wall in the front blocking staff from seeing you, so you have to walk out a bit to get serviced as no one is manning the host stand. Lunch menu was very limited and also very expensive. The sushi lunch bento was $25 and only included 5 pieces of nigiri, seaweed salad, and 3 pieces of shrimp tempura roll (which was shrimp tempura, asparagus, topped with eel sauce), and miso soup. The sushi quality was alright, but the roll was interesting. For $25 I was expecting more and left hungry. Probably won't be back to check them out for dinner.

Aka tasting menu- don't expect any of these items if you do the omakase
Ann M.

We were excited to try Hinoki based on promising reviews and the Kinzo association but we left laughing in disbelief because of what a rip off the $85 Omakase was. Courses 1-3 were fine, nothing extraordinary but nothing terrible. Course 4, the Aka Tasting, is where everything went south. When you see the a la carte Aka Menu items there are 4 items, including things like salmon, yellowtail collar, black cod, and japanese mackerel. But we were served ... chicken skewers. While we realize the actual tasting item may vary from the menu, we expected something on par with the menu items. But whatever- we laughed about it because what else can you do. Unfortunately it kept going downhill from there. The next two courses were even more ridiculous. The soup was a very watered down Miso soup. I've had better tasting miso soup as a complimentary item than this. And the dessert served was ice cream Mochi like what you buy in the freezer aisle at HEB. Such a rip off, no wonder there was only 1 other table there at 6:45pm on a Friday night.

We loved Imura so were somber to hear it got replaced. Sadly, we still miss Imura after trying Hinoki. I thought the sushi was expensive for the small quantity received. The Miso Black Cod was delicious but so tiny. The Ceviche was refreshing, but again, so tiny. I actually went to another restaurant and had to grab something to eat there.

This is a very lowkey spot off of Preston Road where an izakaya was prior to Hinoki taking over the space. Service was great upon walking in. Extra love to the waitress that allowed our daughter to practice her Japanese. I thought the food was on par with its' sister restaurant Kinzo. Really enjoyed the nigiri and the vibe of the restaurant. Great for a weeknight out.

Have been wanting to try Hinoki since they opened after reading the reviews. Always love trying a new sushi spot. Our server was very friendly. We tried the panko oysters to start. Oysters were good and sauce was tasty. They had a little too much breading and were greasy for my taste, but that's personal preference. I think I prefer raw oysters. They were accommodating and allowed me to order a cumbe wrapped roll off the dinner menu. I definitely wish they had no rice rolls with rice or soy paper. I don't love cucumber wrapped rolls, as they fall apart. We also ordered the salmon roll and eel roll. Everything was very fresh and delicious. I would just recommend some no rice options.

Chirashi bento - lunch special

I went to Hinoki today and ate their lunch special. It was awesome. Authentic and delicious! The sashimi and sushi was full of flavor and fresh. You can feel the chef's effort in the presentation and preparation - the wasabi is fresh made and the ginger tastes like it is made in-house too. The portion size is very generous - see my photos. The bento box will definitely fill you up. I also ordered the tempura. The shrimp tempura was excellent. The batter was light and cooked to perfection. Atmosphere and decor is great. Modern and inviting. Service was top notch. I fully recommend this authentic Japanese restaurant!

Hinoke offers an elevated sushi menu in a comfortable environment. Service is outstanding and the sushi is high quality. The menu might seem intimidating for those unfamiliar with high end sushi but the staff was so helpful in helping explaining the different offerings and you really can't go wrong with any of the expertly crafted dishes

Love everything on and off the menu here. We like owner's creativity. He makes everyday dish taste like Michelin quality.

Got the sushi roll bento box. Didn't like the taste or the consistency of the sushi rolls. They tasted like mush and the flavors seemed off for some reason. Was hoping to get a rainbow roll, but it wasn't an option on the limited menu. Service was really good and the people were really nice. I think I was their first customer and hate to leave a bad review, but that was my experience.

BEWARE! If I could give ZERO stars, I would. Service started out ok. Can't even blame the female server and host. The issue is the male sushi rollers behind the bar or whatever they're called. You can see in these pictures what was given to me and my mentee to eat as if we were dogs and not paying customers! We were already waiting for our food (only 2 sushi rolls btw) for almost 20 mins, just for the waitress to come by and tell us that it's going to take a lot longer for our food. I simply asked why because there were only 3 to 4 groups in the whole restaurant that evening. My understanding from her response was that the Caucasian group that came in AFTER us were ordering sashimi that I guess will take some time and skill and they'd rather work on their order. Mind you there were 4 sushi rollers behind the bar so of course I was confused... I asked how much longer it will take because I had to get my mentee back home. 3 to 5 mins later they brought us what you see in the photos. These don't look like anything I saw in the reviews before coming. I was mortified but didn't want to make a scene in front of my mentee who was starving btw. We ate, I paid and left. Regret ever stepping foot in this racist establishment and I'm utterly disgusted with them. I even held on to the menu to possibly order more after trying the first roll. Complete waste of my money.

Grilled Chicken Don

Me and my bf got the toro balsamic which was really tasty alongside one of the bento combos (the one at the top of the menu) and the grilled chicken bowl Would definitely recommend - not an ounce of fishiness and was super tender and fatty :) I'd say I would've loved if the chicken bowl had some sort of sauce, but it was still very delicious The service and atmosphere were also really nice, was surprised with how slow it was so please come visit here!!!

Galbi bento

I tried galbi bento here! sooo good. Perfect service. Nice and chill vibe. will be back soon!

Tasty, but way too expensive for the tiny portion. I'd rather go somewhere that serves bigger pieces of fish.

Our server was very helpful and kind. We ordered chicken karaage for starters and garlic chicken broth ramen as the main course. The serving size is quite big. I've had the pleasure of eating ramen in Japan and yeah, NO. The reason for the 1 star is because we were the first ones in at 11 and the waitress came in sneezing and wiping her nose with her hand, with her child in tow who by the way was all over the place and many times just standing at our table staring at us eat. I kept watching her to see if she would wash her hands or at least use hand sanitizer but she neglected to do either. The ramen: We ordered the spicy garlic pork shoyu and the spicy chicken broth ramen. The garlic pork ramen had 1 small piece of pork belly and the noodles while a great consistency, tasted like cardboard. The broth suffered from the lack of flavor. The chicken ramen was also pretty flavorless. The nerve of someone to compare this place to Ichiran lol. I will say, the service from the chef and the nose wiping waitress was pleasant but the grossness of her wiping her nose and touching every chair, bowl, utensils and eating her chips at the table across from us with her toddler is enough for us to never go back to this place even if it was the last ramen spot on the planet.

Since it was my first time here and I arrived 5 minutes before happy hour ended, I ended up ordering 7 appetizers and 1 yakitori and got full off of those before I even got to order any ramen. I enjoyed all of the appetizers though. We ordered the crab Rangoon, hamachi rayu, crispy pork ears, shishito peppers, beets and Brussels, takoyakis, and seared scallops. We also tried the beef tenderloin yakitori. All of it was really good. The vibe in here is good and they played good music. They have a pretty extensive drink menu ranging from cocktails to beers and sake. I love their open kitchen concept. Next time I'll be back to try their ramen!

The only non-happy hour item we got was the tsukemen (available after 5 pm). The noodles themselves were good, but I was a little confused by the dipping broth. Tsukemen broth is usually thicker and saltier so it really coats the noodles when you dip them, but this one tasted more like regular ramen broth. I ended up pouring everything together and eating it like a bowl of ramen instead

I went the day before Thanksgiving and the japanese chef was a one man show. He was the only one running the establishment because everyone else had left to go to Japan for the holiday. He is so so so so nice. I don't go back to restaurants very often but this place has my heart. This time I got the spicy pork ramen (17), spicy garlic chicken ramen (18), and then got the spicy garlic pork ramen (19) togo. I will say it is a little bit salty, with the garlic ones being more salty than the non garlic ones. However the garlic ones do have more flavor. There's not that much meat/protein either just one piece of meat and an egg. The could be slightly better but it's still good. It also just has bamboo shoots but nothing else. A very simple bowl. Ambiance is nice, it feels upscale but also homey at the same time. They have an open kitchen concept which I like.

I had to dig for it. I know they probably put the meat at the bottom so it'll warm up with the broth, but I prefer it at the top. Unrelated to the food, I sat on the bench and there was a customer sitting on the bench beside me. She kept shifting around and causing the entire bench to move, which I didn't like.

Sake toro and mendaiko cream udon were fantastic. I had no idea shrimp was in the pasta as we didn't see any. Chicken thigh yakitori was also very good. Very flavorful, but wished they would marinate it in the glaze that just gets brushed on. Salmon roll, tuna roll, and yaki gyoza were fine. Probably wouldn't order them again. Spicy tuna hand roll was good, but eat it quickly so the nori doesn't get soft and chewy. Unagi hand roll was fine, nothing special. Service was great, they quickly cleared empty dishes. My only con is the suggested gratuity at the bottom is calculated with tax included, meaning you're tipping on tax if you just check one. Hell would freeze over before I ever tipped on tax. The fish quality here is always super fresh, which is why I keep coming back. One of my favorites is the mentaiko udon as it is creamy and noodles are chewy. Service can be a bit slow during dinner hours. Our waitress forgot about our salad until the end, so we ended up not getting it. She also missed that we noted it was a birthday celebration and forgot the candle, so we had to remind her. When I walked in, I asked the hostess about some of the cooked rolls and which one was popular. Her response was simply, "I don't know," which wasn't very helpful at all--especially for someone trying to decide what to order. I ended up going with the Dynamite Roll, which is fully cooked and loaded with crawfish. Since everything in the roll is cooked, I expected it to come out hot or at least warm. I waited over 30 minutes, and during that time I even tried to get the hostess's attention a few times just to check on the status of my order. While waiting, I asked two other employees for recommendations, and interestingly, they both suggested the same roll I ordered. One of the servers even came over and mentioned that the roll takes longer because it's cooked--which I appreciated--but that also raised my expectations that it would come out fresh and hot. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. After the hostess (who wasn't busy) finally grabbed my order, I got to my car and tried it--and it was lukewarm. Not cold, but definitely not what you'd expect after that kind of wait. The frustrating part is that the roll actually had a lot of potential. It was packed with crawfish and had good flavor, so I can see why it's recommended. Overall, the food has promise, but the service and execution need improvement. I'm willing to give them another try, but if I'm waiting that long again, the food definitely needs to come out hot--or it's going back.
