I've been to hinar a few times for matchas and cakes! #1 most ordered: matcha with early grey syrup and foam!!! Soooo good. Hits the spot every time! They use Califia Oat Milk not sure what type of syrup or matcha they use but I make matcha at home and the taste doesn't come close! Their cakes are really like and fluffy. We've gotten the black sesame, lemon and white chocolate raspberry(?). Not very sweet very good for Asian people standards imo. read more

When you walk in, their glass display is stunning, and it's hard to miss their array of desserts. Their cakes are abs GORGEOUS. I recommend getting the biscoff or raspberry cheesecakes. They're super fluffy and not too sweet. As for the macarons or the cakes with flowers, they're alright. The tiramisu was eh, it was far too strong in coffee flavor and inedible for me to eat. As for drinks, their coffee is average. It's not bad, but it does in a pinch. However...their earl grey matcha is magnificent. Super subtle with the earl grey, and not too strong. You can still taste the matcha and the earl grey did not detract from the matcha at all. It complemented each other. This is the only dessert/cafe place for me that opens late. Most other places close far too early so this is why I keep coming back to Hinar. It gets pretty busy during the day, even til closing so come early if you want a table or before they sell out of cakes for the day. The combination of the hazelnut ganache, the chocolate chiffon, the bananas, and the mixed nuts--which I believe to be almonds and pistachios--in the Banana Krokan Cake I ordered created a smooth texture and rich flavor that's a delight to the senses. The cake had an airy, fluffy texture and the ganache layers had a creamy richness like a chocolate mousse. The bananas provided nice break to the richness of the ganache while the mixed nuts added a nice crunch to the overall eating experience. I also ordered a vanilla bean latte. I was really disappointed with the customer service at Hinar today. After the customer in front of me finished ordering, the cashier didn't acknowledge me at all--no "hi," no greeting, nothing. She simply waited for me to order. During the transaction, she also never asked whether my order was for dine-in or to-go. Once my cake was ready, I realized it had been packed in a to-go box. I politely asked if I could switch my drinks to dine-in and if I could have a plate for my cake. She looked at me and said there were no available tables. I understood that the tables were currently occupied, but I had already noticed that several groups were getting ready to leave, and I planned to wait and take one of those tables. I even pointed out that people were actively leaving, but my request to switch to dine-in was ignored. About a minute or two later, three tables became available, but my drinks had already been made in to-go cups. At that point, I decided not to let it ruin my visit and sat down anyway. However, I still needed a plate for my cake, so I went back to the counter, only to find that no front staff were available to help--only the employees busy making drinks. Overall, the lack of acknowledgment, poor communication, and unwillingness to accommodate a simple request left a bad impression. Upon arrival, I saw that the spot is super cute, and it was very busy even though I was there on a Thursday afternoon. All the seating was taken. What I got: - Brown Sugar Latte with Biscoff Foam: this was good, although it was a lot of sweets, it was still balanced with the coffee flavor. I believe the biscoff foam is seasonal. - White Chocolate Raspberry Cake: the cake was fluffy and moist while the raspberries added the perfect tartness to the cake. I remember going to Hinar's downtown location when they first opened, so I was excited to see they opened another spot closer to North County. I had heard mixed things comparing the two, so I wanted to see for myself. First off, parking here is way easier. It's in a big plaza so you don't have to deal with downtown street parking at all, which already makes a difference. The space itself is also bigger. The downtown one had that hallway into a patio, but this one just feels more open and straightforward. Both still carry that same clean, soft, aesthetic vibe though. Neutral tones, bright but not harsh, everything feels very put together. It's one of those places where you can actually sit for a while without feeling overstimulated. The dessert case looked really good. They had macarons lined up, cheesecakes, and those pretty floral decorated cakes that look almost too nice to touch. Everything looked fresh. I was tempted, but I came for the matcha. Their menu is pretty simple, cafe-style on the wall, with some specials at the counter. For matcha, they offer flavors like vanilla, brown sugar, and Earl Grey, plus a seasonal foam. At the time it was Biscoff foam, which you can pair with either a latte or matcha. I got the Biscoff matcha with oat milk, and it came out to a little over $9 with tip. It is on the pricier side for a drink, but presentation and quality wise, it makes sense. I went around 6 pm and there was still plenty of seating. People were studying, on laptops, or just talking, but it didn't feel overcrowded. Tables were spaced out enough where you don't feel on top of other people. The lighting is really nice too, lots of natural light coming in, so it doesn't feel dim or heavy like some cafes do in the evening. The drink came out pretty quickly and looked really good. The matcha was a bright, vibrant green, which is always a good sign, and it had a thick layer of Biscoff cream on top with crumbles sprinkled over it. It looked layered and clean, not messy or rushed. Taste wise, the first couple sips leaned a little sweet, especially from the foam, but once I stirred it, everything balanced out. You still get that strong earthy matcha flavor, which I care about, and the Biscoff adds sweetness without completely taking over. It didn't taste artificial or watered down either. I also liked the texture from the crumbles. As they mixed into the drink, you'd get little bits throughout which made it more interesting instead of just sipping something flat the whole time. The oat milk worked well with it too, it kept it creamy without being too heavy. Only thing, the caffeine is real. I had this around 6 pm and did not fall asleep until like 2 am, so just keep that in mind if you're sensitive to caffeine or going later in the day. Overall, this location holds up. Many of the pastries were sold out already by the time I arrived in the late afternoon. I ordered the early grey matcha with earl grey foam. 5/5 I would order and get this again 100%! Highly recommend ordering this. Earl grey was foam was strong (in a good way) and the earl grey matcha was very flavorful. Definitely worth the extra $0.75 for the syrup and $0.75 for the foam. I also ordered the lemon poppy cake which was also really good (maybe was too sweet after a few bites but still delicious nonetheless). My friend got the sesame cake, but I wasn't a huge fan. I've gone to the downtown location before and it was difficult to find parking. But this place shares a giant lot with other places so there's plenty of parking spots. The whipped mousse was light and not too sweet but creamy. Didn't know there was a surprise center with candied hazelnut pieces and fresh banana. And a dark caramel action going on I think that was with the cake. Everything balanced nicely together with the sweet, spongy, different textures to the cake. The crispy glazed nuts. The tropical feel of the banana. For our drinks we each got matcha latte. It doesn't come with sweetener so you can add a flavoring. I went with vanilla. And the seasonal foam they had going on was biscoff and it is DELICIOUS. Loved that the drink was not too sweet. Strong earthy matcha. Hinar's original location has garnered a considerable amount of hype on social media, but as someone who hates driving downtown, I was ecstatic to hear that a second location (with much more parking) was coming! At the recommendation of my friend, I got a matcha, which is apparently really good here. Indeed, I'm happy to report that the hype was well-deserved! I got the matcha with brown sugar syrup, brown sugar foam, and almond milk. Genuinely, it was so good. Granted, I don't have a refined enough palette to tell the difference between different grades of ceremonial matcha; I just know what I like and don't like. And I've tried a lot of bad matcha...but luckily, this wasn't one of them! It was definitely on the sweeter side because of the brown sugar, but I enjoyed it! My friend, on the other hand, got the matcha with earl grey and regular milk. Wow, if I thought mine was good, hers was GREAT. I definitely recommend this combo. The earl grey adds a unique flavor profile to the matcha. I never would've thought this combination would work, but it does! Consider my mind changed. We also got the banana krokan cake. It was absolutely delicious. Not too sweet, and beautifully presented. There were a lot of different components to this small cake, but they work gracefully together. The little crunchies inside complemented the smooth cream so well. Probably the best thing I ate all day! I would 100% recommend! Inside, there weren't many seats available, sadly. Hinar is such a cute spot. I love all their desserts and everything always looks so pretty and well made. It is definitely on the pricey side though. Two macarons for eight dollars feels kind of wild, but they taste great so I still end up getting them. I was a bit flabbergasted by the way they handled my cheesecake. It was placed directly on the counter, rather than placed directly in the box. Though I'm sure they wipe down the surfaces, I wanted to ask to ensure the food was being handled properly, as I could see it right in front of me, right on the counter without anything underneath. When I asked the staff about this, she seemed to evade my question and let me know all of the cheesecakes are the same. I was a bit put off by this, so I inquired to another staff about this, and he explained that it was sanitary because all cakes have a parchment paper under it. Even if the cake was technically still sanitary, it was still a bit offputting that even after bringing up my concerns, it was explained that this was just the procedure at Hinar. I just felt that the cakes should have been placed directly in the box from the get-go, if not on a plate or napkin. Considering it was $12 per slice, and the place has a classy and aesthetic vibe, I just felt that this was very odd, and potentially still a little unsanitary. The prices are fairly high, and they don't explicitly disclose all of the charges. I noticed the dessert signs finally have price signs now, as when I went months ago there were no visible prices. For the drinks, the base price is listed, but the cost of syrup and foam is not disclosed, each being $0.75 extra. This is fine, but it would be nice if there was a small menu sign with prices for these add-ons. I'm not sure I would go back. The matcha was just alright, and the cheesecake tasted similar to other shops nearby (which would be for less of the cost). There were people sitting and working on their computers or just chatting. The workers were very kind and everything came out quickly. They offered a genuine smile and greeting on the way in and answered any assistance if needed. I got an almond croissant and a brown sugar latte. The latte was really good. It had a great coffee flavor and wasn't too sweet which I was worried about. I've heard their matchas are really good too. I took the croissant to go so I didn't have it heated up but they do offer it. I had a piece at home and it was delicious. It didn't even need to be heated up. The almonds on the outside were toasted a little which made them crisp while the inside was still a little soft. The flavor was sweet and buttery and the lamination on the croissant was beautiful making it nice and flakey. The other desserts in the display all looked so beautiful so I will definitely be back to try some of those. I love exploring local cafe and coffee shops and I must say this has been the overall best experience for me so far! Hinar has two locations, one in download town San Diego (having to find parking and mostly metered parking in that area) and one in Scripps Ranch and I decided to go to Scripps Ranch since parking would be much earlier. This location is the Scripps Ranch location. The decor was very nice and there is a Christmas tree for the December holiday season. Hinar offer various pastries, desserts, and lattes you can order. I ordered an ice matcha latte with pistachio cold foam with oat milk, which had a great taste and pistachio nuts as well, which offered a nice color and crunch. I got the black sesame pastry which had a layers of black sesame and sponge cake with nice presentation and with a flower on top. The cake was light and creamy and it had a good black sesame taste. The main downside is that there are no outlets near the seats. I didn't come with my laptop fully charged up so next time I would need to make sure it is charged so I can do a longer work/study session.
