One star. I booked Himitsu in La Jolla for my birthday dinner because it was on the Michelin star list and I wanted to celebrate with an amazing experience. Unfortunately, this ended up being one of the worst high-end dining experiences I've ever had.
I booked a party of 5 for 5 PM, but somehow the reservation got changed to 3 PM. I honestly don't know whose fault it was, so I won't blame the restaurant for that, but it was frustrating because I'm positive I booked it online for 5 PM.
When we arrived, a nice hostess greeted us and brought water right away. Our server came over, loosely introduced himself, and I immediately told him something very important: absolutely NO wasabi on anything I ordered. He assured me multiple times that it would not be a problem.
From there, the service completely fell apart.
I ordered a Coke with extra ice and had to ask FOUR times for more ice because he kept forgetting. I tried to brush it off as an honest mistake. We ordered quite a bit of food, including nigiri and appetizers. The spicy edamame came out first, and honestly, it was terrible. It wasn't traditional spicy edamame at all -- it was dry and overloaded with seasoning. Definitely skip it.
Then the waiting started.
A table next to us got seated about 8 minutes after we did, and somehow they received all of their food before we even got our first real dishes. About 40 minutes later, we FINALLY got our food -- almost an hour into dinner. I had to ask three times for a Coke refill before I finally got one.
The food itself was actually good, so I ordered more nigiri. When the second round came out, it had wasabi on it. I tasted it immediately and told the manager because I had specifically stated multiple times that I cannot have wasabi. My son also asked for a Coke and we had to remind the server three times to bring it. I asked for ponzu four separate times before it ever showed up.
Meanwhile, the table next to us had a different server and you could clearly see the difference in service quality. They were attentive, organized, and fast while our table felt completely ignored the entire night.
Then another sushi order came out -- AGAIN with wasabi. At this point I was furious because I had been extremely clear from the beginning. The manager apologized and specifically said they would remake the sushi and remove it from the bill.
After sitting there for almost two hours already, the replacement finally came out. We were exhausted and ready to leave. I asked for the check, and shockingly, they never removed the incorrect sushi from the bill like they promised. Nothing was removed at all.
The manager brought complimentary desserts, but honestly that didn't make up for the horrible experience. To make things worse, the restaurant automatically adds a 20% service fee to the bill, which honestly feels like it's there because they already know the service is bad. The manager did waive the service fee, but I still had to pay for the sushi that was made incorrectly and had to be remade.
I have eaten at 23 Michelin-star restaurants, and this was by far the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant trying to present itself as "high-end." Good food cannot make up for terrible service, constant mistakes, and a complete lack of accountability.
I will never return and would absolutely not recommend Himitsu to anyone looking for a quality fine dining experience. read more
