My daughter asked if we could get Indian food and the Himalayan yeti less than a mile from my home. I certainly would recommend it as I have tried them several times. We got the Momo chicken dumplings which was outstanding. Surprisingly she chose the steamed dumplings rather than the fried. The dumplings themselves were succulent and and had a little bit of chew, but I did not care much for the dipping sauce did not have a lot of spice and was rather bland. The butter chicken was tasty and the vegetable korma was also outstanding. We got both of them at the medium spice level, which had a decent amount of heat, but was not overwhelming. We also tried the garlic naan which was a tad bit crispy, but had great flavor. The Basmati rice was cooked to an al dente level that went well with our dishes. This unassuming spot has some of the best Indian food we have had in years. Added bonus: the prices are incredibly reasonable! My husband was enthralled with his spicy matter paneer. The chili naan was spicy and had a great depth of flavor. I had the chef's special combo platter. It was a perfect taste of all the things - naan, mater paneer, veggie samosa, Saag paneer, and more. I was specifically craving a dish from this restaurant this week and man they do not disappoint. I absolutely love Indian cuisine as I never struggle to find vegetarian options. The Naan was delish and I loved the app and entrée I got! The entree was missing kidney beans this time which is part of the reason I was so excited to order from here again so that was disappointing. Another down side is that the food did take a while to be made and we waited for our food for probably 20 minutes after the estimated pick up time. All of this being said, I will probably still get take out from here again because despite it all, I love that dish. *Review on the lunch buffet and experience on this last visit only.* HY opened up their inside dining a week ago (today being July 9th) and we were excited to go and try out their lunch buffet. We've gone to several Indian buffet's before and maybe just had high expectations. We've also been through the drive-thru here and liked the food each time. It was a bit of a let down. The place on the inside is nice, it was only about 1/4 full and I'm sure this had something to do with the food quality. Things seemed to have been old. The na'an was dry and cold. I would have liked to have seen, maybe, less bread there more often. The warming trays did well for the main entrees but everything else was, like the na'an, a little dry, old and cool (like the veggie pakora). The salad was good - fresh lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, and carrots. If I'm not mistaken the only dressing they had was ranch. So the food is alright. The service is really good. Friendly staff and very attentive. The HUGE negative to our visit was a constant banging from the kitchen. It went on for well over fifteen minutes and made for a really bad atmosphere. I don't know what they were doing back there, it sounded like a cleaver hitting a cutting board. Maybe something done when the restaurant is closed would have been better? (If I did it correctly there should be two videos taken during) And if I have to nit-pick - the booth we were seated in was extreeeeeemely tight. I'm not a big guy but had to maneuver somehow to comfortably get in and out of the booth. Especially without taking the tablecloth with me. Maybe it was just that one, I don't know. The nostalgia I feel when coming here is heartwarming--almost as warm as the chicken tikka masala! From the beautiful photos of the Himalayas and traditional decor and music, clearly well loved booth setting, cozy vibes to the kind demeanor and pleasant smiles from the staff, this is the real deal. And it gets crowded because it's popular! They did their best even with a large crowd so I won't say anything about how long it took; also foods like these take TIME to make, and it you want something good quality not just something that's been sitting out all day. They make it fresh, even the achaar (fermented pickles). It gets packed for good reason. I ordered the chicken tikka masala and garlic naan...I like that they let you choose the spice level, for me I chose hot. I have a theory that little family owned restaurants housed in former fast-food establishments are 9 times out of 10 exceptional for service and food, while providing an interesting glimpse into how someone turns a recognizable chain restaurant layout into their own unique space. I was proven correct once again on my theory with my first trip to Himalayan Yeti on Kingshighway. Unassumingly housed in an old Long John Silvers, it was recommended to me by a friend who knows I love Indian cuisine. Having worked at a LJS in my youth, it was fun to see how the proprietors of this establishment had turned the space into a simple but homey dining space. My partner and I went early (about 5:30 on a Friday night) and there was only one other family there. By the time we left at about 7, the place was comfortably full. So clearly, others love it, too! Since it was our first time there, we stuck to pretty safe choices - samosa appetizer, Lamb Tikka Masala for him and Chicken Tikka Masala for me, with a side order of plain naan. We were given the option to choose how spicy-hot we wanted our dinners. Raised in the Southwest on jalapenos and habaneros, I went for hot (I could have gone super-hot) and was not disappointed. My partner got his lamb medium, and said it had a decent kick. My partner was especially excited to see so many lamb options available, and has already identified several dishes he wants to try. As for me, if I could eat chicken tikka masala every day of the week, I might. This one was excellent and I can't wait to have it again. The naan was clearly homemade and had a light, fluffy texture. Our samosas were quite nice, but could have been just a smidge crispier. Service was very good, and we always had a full beverage, and our food was served up quickly, but not rushed. Lastly, the prices here were extremely reasonable, with the food being of comparable quality to other similar restaurants in the area at a lower pricepoint. This is an excellent option for take out in south City. Himalayan Yeti is on par with India Rasoi, Gokul, or other Indian restaurants in St. Louis. The food is top notch, although there have been a few snafoos related to service (although it is unclear if these are the restaurants fault or the ordering app's fault). Last night we ordered the following: Appetizers: Steamed chicken momos. Generous portion, even for a half order. Really good consistency. The filling is a it bitter, but it works. 8.5 out of 10 Veggie samosas. Very rich flavor, and goes well with the tamarind sauce provided. The fried dough + potato filling combination is a bit too starchy for me, but still recommend that you try them 8.5 out of 10. Entrees: Chicken Tikka Massala. A classic at any Indian restaurant in the US, and this doesn't disappoint. 9 out of 10. Navratam Korma. The sauce is very good, and there are chunks of paneer which is a good touch. One drawback is that sometimes the vegetables (especially the carrots and zuchini) are kind of slimey. 8 out of 10 We accompanied the entrees with a garlic cheese naan. That is a 10 out of 10. Generous with the cheese. Generous with the garlic. Get it! Be careful if you order delivery with the Beyond Menu app though. We order here pretty regularly, and 3 times our order has been wrong. What's weird is that the app shows that we ordered the correct things, but the ticket the food arrives with (from the restaurant) is wrong. This has been on my list for awhile because it's so highly rated, and there's a reason for that. We came for a late dinner on a Wednesday, and surprisingly, it wasn't very busy. We were immediately seated and had great service all night. We got samosas and naan, I got the paneer masala, tons of rice, and ended the evening with a chai. All of it was SO GOOD. Literally, not one complaint. I ate the same meal two more times it was so much food. We used to live in U City and there's some pretty good Indian food up there, but wanted someplace closer with good options. This is it, might be some of the best in city limits. read more

Great Sunday dinner at Himalayan yeti. They have indo- Nepalese food and cool Nepal themed decor . We tried to focus on Nepal specific food -momos ( stuffed dumplings ) , chicken choila for apps. We ordered a Nepalese entree with beans and potatoes. It was wholesome and delicious . We also tried chicken sekuwa and chicken tikka masala. They were all great. Had dinner here. We tried the veg biryani, mutter paneer, paratha, garlic naan, veg momo and masala chai. The chai was good. Momos were good as well. Everything else was average. Felt the paratha was dry, naan was a little undercooked. Veg biryani had a lot of vegetables including corn in it, didn't seem to blend well, tasted average. Mutter paneer was good. Family run Indian and Nepalese serving stews, curries, and tandoori. Fun decor inside. Salad bar and lunch buffet most days. Spice level of almost all dishes can be adjusted on a scale of 1-5. Takeout: Goat Curry (with bones), Chicken Tika Masala, saffron rice, and garlic cheese naan. CTM is a classic and this was a solid version. The goat curry was a bit on the salty side in a rich brown sauce. The goat bones were likely from vertebrae or neck, with a ton of connective tissue that broke down into a gelatinous rich mouthfeel in the sauce. GC was good but not sure I'd order again. I want to try the Lamb Rogan Josh next time. Garlic cheese naan was fantastic, a must order. Service was friendly but food comes out slow, even for to-go orders (only reason for 4 vs 5 stars). I ordered takeout right when they opened at 5pm on Sunday, and took 40 minutes for my to-go order to be ready. It was worth the wait but don't be in a hurry. read more

I got takeout here on a Saturday night around 8 o'clock. The restaurant was super busy. It took a bit longer to get my takeout order than promised. I ordered the paneer tikka masala, chicken tikka, the chola masala, and a garlic naan. I really enjoyed the paneer, tikka masala, and the chicken tikka, both had great flavor. I especially liked that. There are onions and green peppers with both dishes. Although I cannot say the same about the cholla masala and the garlic. The garlic naan was dry/had and not as pliable as a normal naan. The chick peas in the chola masala were not cooked. This made it very hard to eat. I have had better experiences here in the past, so I will try them again but not anytime soon. read more

Amazing. This place has become our new go-to for Indian food (easily surpassing Turmeric--an old go-to for us) and we definitely want to come back to try to the Nepalese dishes. My husband and I ordered the lamb korma, lamb tikka masala, and the cheese naan, and all three were excellent! The pieces of lamb were literally cooked to perfection--they were so incredibly tender and not dry--and the sauces were delectable. They didn't skimp at all on the cheese in the cheese naan like I've experienced before at other places. No, this one gave a full-on, beautiful cheese pull. There wasn't any wait at all when we went and the service was good. They also have their own parking lot, which is nice. Ambiance isn't anything special and the place is not particularly aesthetic, but I'm a foodie there for the food, so that didn't bother me at all. 5 stars in my book! read more

Don't let the appearance of the restaurant deter you from giving this place a try. The Himalayan Yeti serves food that is a fusion of ingredients, flavors and cooking styles of a variety of cultures including China, Tibet and of course, India. Their buffet offers a variety of scintillating flavors with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Compared to other Indian buffets we have tried, a few honorable mentions were the masala chai station and lentil soup (dal) they offered. Additionally, they had mint chutney, mixed pickle and mango chutney along with raita. All the dishes at the buffet were packed with flavor. The chicken tikka was little bit on the sweet side and my favorite goat curry was on point. There were two dessert options: kheer (rice pudding) and Gulab jamun. The decor and layout was good. There are plenty of parking spots which is convenient. This place could get packed with customers fast even though they have both indoor and outdoor seating. I have been passing this place for years and never thought to stop by. Snowy weather caused me to think of food places that are near. After a quick game of Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Mo, Himalayan Yeti won. I called and a nice lady answered I let her know that I was pregnant and needed food to last for a few meals. I ordered the Butter Chicken with Garlic Cheese Naan and the nice lady suggest I get veggie samosas. Everything was hot and ready in 15 minutes. When you pick up your food there is a pickup window on the Southside of the building. The Butter Chicken(mild) was flavorful and had lots of chicken, and the garlic cheese naan was cheese(check out the cheese pull) but it lacked garlic flavor. I'd still get it again tho. After having the Veggie Samosas I understand why they are so popular. They are filling, spicy and scrumptious! Looking forward to visiting again. read more

Excellent spot for dinner! Came in with a party of four and seated promptly. Ordered garlic naan, paneer tikka masala, lamb vindaloo, chicken Biriyani, chow mein, and a full order of chicken momos. We ordered a spice level of 5 for all the dishes and it is not for the faint of heart. For most I'd probably recommend a 2 or 3. If you can't handle much spice at all, order 1. We had tears in our eyes and jackets had to be removed due to the heat of the food . The flavor though was amazing! No notes on the dishes but next time we would probably order the momos steamed instead of fried and ask for extra sauce to pour over them. Also bonus points for the meat being cooked so well, not a single piece was dry. The price for all of this high quality food was unbeatable. Will definitely be back again! read more

I studied abroad in Nepal and was really craving Thakali, momos, dal bhat, lassi, and more. They had it all here! They didn't have the Nepali style Thakali, but I was told by the waiter that served us that they had the Indian version, and it was just as good. This one came with yogurt, papad, saag paneer, and surprisingly, a dessert, too! It was khir, rice pudding in rose water. So all together, an incredibly flavorful, satisfying plate of so many different things. And you could taste that it was all fresh. Also, I tried their mango and their strawberry lassi. I have heard of this place but never been in my 14 months as a STL resident. I finally got in to try them out. For $12 with tax this is a darn good deal indeed. Small spread compared to say a typical Chinese buffet but what you get here is good quality across the board. All the entrees, soups, sides, breads etc, good! They keep the trays filled at all times and the food texture, smell, flavor, all on point. I love the tandoori chicken and Himalayan mixed veggies most myself. Its quick, fast, simple and affordable. Beats the typical drive through, healthier as well. You can also get take out here as well from the buffet so that's a nice option for those in a lunch rush. Generally speaking, I can't taste the differences between good vs great Indian food and I've never been to India. I personally think the food here is pretty good. I've tried their chicken tikka masala(tamato base), lamb saag (spinach base), fish currency, garlic cheese naan and some other dishes. My favorite one is probably lamb saag - it has so much flavors in one dish and very dense and savory. They let you choose spice level, 5 being the hottest. I ordered 4 once which turned out to be a huge mistake. When they say very spicy, they mean it... Oh, their lassie is also pretty good or standard should I say? They also bring you free papadum (northern indian chips?)with 2 types of sauce before your dishes are served. Good service as well.
