Lunch Special: Butter Chicken, Rice, Dal Makhani, Mixed Vegetable Curry, Naan and side of Garlic Naan
    Dante M.

I wanted to try out an Indian Buffet while back in Chicago, and saw some fantastic reviews about Himalayan Sherpa Kitchen in highwood! However, when I got here, I was sadly informed that they were not having the buffet anymore, but my Grandma and I still decided to eat here! I tried ordering the Goat Thali set when I saw it on the menu (because it would be the closest thing to a buffet), but I was yet again informed that they did not have the Thali available, which was really disappointing. My grandma ended up ordering the Lunch special today, which included butter chicken, rice, mixed vegetable curry, dal makhani, naan, and a few raw vegetables. I ordered the lamb biryani, a dish that I had been very interested in trying for a long time. The lunch special was a very good sized meal! Everything was delicious and well flavored, and nothing was too spicy (which made my grandma very happy :) ) The lamb biryani was delicious! You could see the cumin seeds and taste all of the spices that were cooked throughout the rice, and the lamb was super tender that you could break it apart with a fork! It was absolutely delicious. We also ordered a side of garlic naan bread, which was to die for! it was so soft, and it paired perfectly with all of the dishes! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting to tryout Himalayan/Nepalese/Indian food, as the menu is very extensive and there is DEFINITELY something for everyone! The only reason I can't give it 5/5 stars is because I was really hopping for an indian buffet or a thali as there website and menu said, respectfully.

Skipped the buffet and ordered a couple dishes from the menu...the momo was good, a bit on the pricey/small side, but I ain't complaining coz I don't have to drive 20miles to get momo... the chicken 'kebabs' dish was surprisingly moist...I am making mental notes on some other dishes to try next time :) They really need to work on replacing the legacy curryhut stuff from branding perspective...

Honestly would not recommend. I was expecting more from this restaurant since it had pretty good reviews. There are TONS of better restaurants for Indian food, I would not waste your money here. The paneer makhani was loaded w food coloring (hence the extremely bright red color). It tasted diluted - the dish was not creamy or flavorful at all. The garlic naan was surprisingly good. The waiter was difficult to understand (seemed like he was mumbling the entire time) and he didn't check in on us a single time after our food arrived. The vast majority of Indian restaurants serve basmati rice with the curry dish. To our surprise, our curry arrived without rice! We had to hunt down the waiter to order saffron rice and when it arrived we were disappointed again! It had 0 saffron flavor and again it was very obvious food coloring had been used in the rice. To add to this, when we sat down we realized the tablecloth and chairs had stains from previous customers which is quite gross. Lastly, the restaurant's website also states there is a lunch buffet available on the weekend - there was no lunch buffet. All the claims on the website include the food being flavorful, fresh, and authentic - unfortunately, I don't think this restaurant's food was able to display any of these qualities!

The last time I was there, some standout dishes included a corn risotto, a couscous salad, and for dessert, peanut butter and jelly shots. And loading up on the cheese and lavosh station is totally understandable... It's amazing. A few complaints: The night we were there, the quality of the fruit wasn't so great, the bread pudding couldn't be severed with the serving utensils provided, and they had a crab-yellow watermelon salad that was pretty bland and watery. But: my very picky younger brother had about six plates of mussels-- and if he leaves a restaurant happy, it's often miraculous. So many vegetarian options, and so convenient when picnicking gets too cumbersome. I know not what All You Can Eat (AYCE) that is referenced in these reviews. Our group picked a Combo that served 2-3 people. The price/description is different than what you see on the website or Yelp menu. Our Combo was $100 and included miso or seaweed soup, rice, banchan and four kinds of meat: marinated bulgogi, short rib, ribeye and brisket. Delicious Delicious. The banchan was tasty tasty. I especially liked the pickled cucumber and the kimchi. Some of the reviews said they were charged extra for refills on the banchan dishes. We were not. What a feast. The server loaded up our grill with brisket and would leave and come back to flip things or turn things although we were pretty capable of doing it ourselves. They very nicely cut our ribeye into bite-sized pieces with the kitchen shears and also snipped up the short rib. The meat was delicious and the banchan and rice soon filled us up. We used the green leafy lettuce to make ssambap. I also liked the sauce with the sesame oil and salt. The bulgogi was last and we had to dig deep to finish it. What I liked was that nothing stuck to the grill and nothing burned either. I've had kbbq before at other places where it was too hot and the meat was burned. Everything was cooked perfectly. There was another table where flames shot up from the grill but the staff quickly went over to help. The staff was friendly and efficient. The banchan was plentiful and tasty. The portions of meat were pretty generous and good quality. Although pricy, I feel we got a lot of food and the meat was excellent because we cooked it ourselves :). So good so good.
