My family was in town and we were looking for something more substantial to eat. We're all allium-free vegetarians with a token allium-free vegan and we usually stick to certain cuisines, including Indian, when we eat out away from home, if we're not going for something like a sandwich... but there are no fully vegetarian South/East Asian eateries in San Antonio! On a whim, I called Himalayan Kitchen and what followed was a fairly long conversation about what we could and could not have. Basically: can we order more than just one dish, because it's always fun when you have a group of 5+ people order the same exact thing. He gave me hope. Though this establishment does serve meat, they have a vegetarian section on their menu. From what I discovered, many can be made without alliums except for malai kofta (they cannot remove the garlic from the sauce)... so we all showed up a few hours later with hopes of eating a hot meal. The place is fairly new... less than a year? They did have a steady stream of customers and ample seating space. It all looked clean and welcoming. They were very friendly and nice. I'm under the strong impression this was their first time meeting people who don't eat onions and garlic (and everything else in the same family). Though they didn't understand it, they did try their very best to accommodate us. It did get a little crazy and possibly confusing. I believe the place is authentic (the text states they serve Indian-Nepalese cuisine) and their first language isn't English. They spoke this beautiful language that reminded me of Tibetan (I haven't met Nepalese people before so I can't say if it is Nepali or not), but I digress. They were confused when some of us were okay with paneer and yogurt because one of us did not. Then my youngest has a slew of food allergies including nuts... some of their curry bases include cashew cream. What came out of it was... MUTTER PANEER - peas and paneer (cheese) in a gravy. Yum! PALAK PANEER - paneer in a creamed mixed greens curry/gravy. Honestly, you can't go wrong with this. DAL MAKHANI - a black lentil curry, meant for the second kid. VEGETABLE PANEER BIRYANI - basically, South Asian "fried" rice made with basmati, served with raita (a yogurt sauce).. this we got for my youngest and we made a note for that so it's not that spicy. Flavorful and those aromatics are wonderful.. unless you bite into one. Haha... SALTY LASSI - a savory yogurt drink with spices (cumin and cardamom, I think)? I absolutely loved this! MANGO LASSI - this was delicious as well! My only question is why the color was so bright that it could easily pass for carrot lassi. It does taste like mangoes so there's that. My vegan sister and her husband shared the Mutter Tofu and Aloo Gobhi (delicious potatoes). The remainder of the party also got a Veggie Paneer Biryani dish with medium spicy levels. Verdict? They were very aromatic and you can see the whole spices in there. All the curries come with a bowl of rice (saffron, peas?). They were all also spicy. I don't do spicy well but thank goodness for lassi because they were right there where it borders being slightly too spicy for me. I enjoyed them a lot but there wasn't the creaminess that I expect from these dishes (is that why it was so spicy?) - my staples when it comes to eating Indian food. I wonder if they took out the cashew cream in there but the flavors are wonderfully apparent. Funny enough, the biryani for the 2 year old was also spicy (and there were a few garnishes of alliums which we easily picked off). It was delicious though and I loved it with the raita, which gave it a fresh taste and gave it some moisture. My toddler liked it! We mixed it with some of the "plain" Rice and he ate some. I was amazed. The other recipient of the biryani absolutely loved his and upon tasting the other dishes, declared it was amongst his favorite Indian food. I was impressed! He's not the biggest fan, haha. Honestly, I was trying to keep myself together from the spices. LOL. Plus the toddler was in one of his moods so we ended up packing up most of our food to eat later. However, I do have positive feelings about this establishment and major kudos to them trying to work around our dietary restrictions. I know it can get overwhelming. Thank you for the food! I have been wanting to try this place for a while. My husband...not so much. But I convinced him and he tried it. He got a simple dish; fried rice. I tried the biryani with chicken. The biryani had good flavor but I wish it had a bit more meat included with it. I ordered it with chicken and while it had a few pieces, for the size of the dish I think it should have had a little more. The flavor was good and the serving was so big that I was able to take the leftovers home nd have 2 more meals! The prices weren't bad for the portion size. Next time I will definitely try something a little more adventurous. The service was great. They had us seated as soon as we walked in and they took our drink order before walking away from the table. The restaurant has a decent amount of tables and they were all being used so the place was busy. Our food came out fast and it was hot. The ambiance is laid back and they had the tv's on different shows. At the end of our meal a gentleman came over to ask how our experience was eating there. I don't know if he was the manager or owner but he was very nice and we had a nice chat about the food and the spices used. I will definitely go back to try something new. read more

I have lived in San Antonio for approximately 6 months now, and I'd like to think of myself as someone that prefers to try something new and exciting over going to the same restaurant. HOWEVER! This place keeps pulling me back and I go at least once every two weeks. The momo is awesome to have as an appetizer and their signature Himalayan goat curry is SO tender and delicious. One of the management team stopped to chat with me and made me feel so welcome! Also, I love the interior. There's a good separation for the bar area with a quick bite and the dining room itself. It was a great relief to see an authentic South Asian restaurant in San Antonio as I was craving just about any type of Asian food during my vacation here. Everything was delicious as expected. The garlic naan was addicting and fluffy, as well as the rice. The butter chicken was a generous portion in addition to being deliciously savory and creamy. Finally, the aloo gobi had a generous amount of cauliflower which is what I look for when ordering it. So many delicious spices I tasted throughout the meal. I wish I could've tried more on the menu! Decided to try some place new for lunch on a whim and was not disappointed. The Chicken Tikka Masala was delicious and aromatic, the garlic naan was absolutely fragrant and warm, and the veggie samosas were flaky and stuffed full of potato and veg. The restaurant was clean and relaxed, I loved the metal dishes the food was served in, helped feel more authentic. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable, she shared that the restaurant was a new family venture, and honestly, we wish her and her family continued success. We will be back! read more

I came here with some friends who had been before; though it was my first time. Tip: there're two doors; use the one on the right. The service was great; everyone smiled and were friendly. The food came out fairly quickly. I like the interior -- good tables and chairs, decorations weren't too much, but the place wasn't bare. I'm not a huge fan of Indian food, but there are a few dishes I can feel safe getting. They have a spiciness scale of 1-5. Everyone I was with got 2 and seemed to be just right. I don't think I would personally go beyond a 3 without some sort of dare reward that I deem worth it. My only real complaint is maybe a cultural thing, I'm not sure, but I ordered a dish with goat as the protein and there were several pieces of bone in it. I was later told by one of my group that on a profit visit they were warned of that being how it's made. So if you order something with goat meat (which is delicious), chew carefully. And they have a variety of naan breads: rosemary, garlic, etc. I'm definitely willing to return. read more

Can only comment on the food because we ordered takeout. We were craving for Indian food so decided to try this spot out. Got the Chicken Tikka, Palak Paneer and Goat Curry. Out of the three, the Goat Curry was the best. Unfortunately, the Palak Paneer lacked a more forward taste. The Chicken Tikka was sweeter than what we're used to. Not sure if it's because it's a fusion restaurant. The food wasnt bad, the portion was decent for the price but it just didnt meet our cravings. The food here is really good and service is fast. The goat curry is a must try but be careful when they ask you if you want spicy or mot. I love spicy food but the spice here is a whole new level it will have you sweating I would suggest getting your food non spicy and asking them for spice in the side to make it your taste level. The first time I ordered online and went in for pick up and the order had never been received so I had to re-order and wait. The owner was very friendly and apologized profusely for the issue and gave me a free drink as well. I started out with the Vegetable Samosas which were delicious and had the perfect amount of spice and were not spicy. I had never heard of Momo's and decided to give them a try. They were a little too sweet for my liking but the filling did have good flavor and the skins were nice and crunchy and reminded me of a pot sticker. If I get them again I would just ask that they not be covered with the sweet Momo sauce. I also had to get my favorite Chicken Tikka Masala to see if it was as good as other places and it did not disappoint. It had a great creamy savory sauce that was not overly sweet and the chicken was cooked perfectly. FIRST TIME VISIT! I have been craving some Indian food but haven't quite picked a Yelp favorite just yet to try out. I happened to drive by this new spot with the hubby yesterday and if you know him, you know I'll be dining alone at an exotic eatery like this one. Haha! It's ok. I enjoy dining alone sometimes. Allows me a distraction-free reviewing experience while I'm still dining... so here I am enjoying a solo dinner. THE LOCATION: This place is located in a strip of businesses at Alamo Ranch near the Chick-Fil-A and my fave ramen spot. Lots of parking to be found. Kumori Japanese restaurant is right next door. THE MENU: there are LOTS of choices at this place. Appetizers, Vegetarian menu, desserts, soups and more! I was here for some Indian food but also curious about Nepalese food, too. I decide to order a Mango Lassi to drink (a yogurt beverage that is mango flavored), Veggie Samosas for an appetizer and Chicken Vindaloo for my entree. I also order the Kheer for dessert. THE SERVICE: I was greeted immediately upon entering the restaurant. The woman who greeted me brought me to a table quickly and returned after a few moments to get my drink order. She is lovely in the way she addresses and engages with me, and pretty, too! I have a ton of questions, this being my first time and she is happy to divulge tons of info. She and her hubby are the owners of this family-run business and they take a lot of pride in it. She tells me about this 2-year long dream and the risk she knows she faces in running this small business during these scary economic times. She and hubby are both native to Nepal and I am EXCITED to embark on what I believe will be an authentic experience. Squeeeeeeee!!! She and another server are very attentive and I feel very welcomed, nurtured and appreciated. THE FOOD: the Samosas come quick. Hot and HUGE! I don't recall samosas being so big. The 2 pieces are definitely good for two people. The dipping sauces that come with it are delicious. One is a sweet tamarind dip and I don't recall what the green one is, but it's my favorite. Lol. I usually eat Tikka Masala and curries when I dine on Indian food so I opted to try the Vindaloo with chicken with a medium spicy level. The red sauce is nice and I enjoy it with the basmati rice that comes in a separate dish. I could have used more spiciness, so now I know how to gauge this place's perception of HOT. Go spicy or go home, y'all! The garlic naan is EXACTLY what I needed, had been craving for a while and was not a disappointment. It came glistening with butter (?) and fresh garlic. I could've just made a meal out of that. Seriously. The Kheer I sample for dessert is a rice pudding. Not as thick as tapioca and definitely a thin version of arroz con leche minus the cinnamon. A few golden raisins adorn the surface of the dish. I enjoy it! OVERALL: I am so pleased with this place, the new flavors to this community and the great customer service. This place is a MUST VISIT. It's a quaint restaurant with a lovely ambiance inside. The owner is super sweet as are the employees. We visit San Antonio once a year and always stop by at least once.
