Came here for a Valentine's lunch and well, can't say I heart it very much. Even the great service and friendly staff were not enough to give this restaurant a future spot on our ethnic food rotation. The Butter Chicken should be a staple in any Indian cuisine, but this one slipped through as merely average. I ordered a spice level 4 of 5, which should have set my sweat glands working overtime, but I could not even taste much spice or flavor. Wifey selected the chef's special and it was anything but special. The pricing is fair and the inside atmosphere is low key, which is what I expected from a shopping center establishment. This location is in a shared plaza with plenty of parking. The exterior is unassuming but the food and service is fantastic at this family owned business. Our server was also the owner and she was great about talking about the food options. We tried the momos and were not disappointed. She explained this is a popular Nepalese street food. What an experience! We were an extremely large group, yet they accommodated us with ease. From the moment we walked in, they made us feel right at home. Our hostess was warm, charming, and nothing short of amazing. When the food came out, every dish was simply delicious--most of us were full before the last plate even hit the table. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful, and I only wished I lived closer because I could definitely see myself becoming a regular. The first time I discovered this place I was very impressed. I ordered the Paneer/ Tofu Tikka Masala, which was a huge order. The food was delicious and spicy. Them samosas where the only saving Grace. The mango mojito was too sweet and tasted like syrup. The momos were bland like the sauce and just reminded me of potstickers, they didn't look like the picture they had on the site at all! My husbands plate was a spicy level of 2/5 and felt like a 4. A great revisit. It's one of our favorite places in town to get naan. It's so good here. The midget had rice again. It was fantastic. We had butter chicken, samosa, the sizzling grill, and garlic/regular/and cheese naan. One of our favorite things here is that when they mean spice, they mean SPICE! We ordered a level up this time, and man we felt it. In a great way though. The rice was great. The naan was amazing as always. All of it was good to great! So why not a bump up this time to a 5?. What we ordered: - sizzling pork momo: I had no idea what this was but I wanted to try it! There were 10 dumpling like pieces which came out sizzling and looked and smelled amazing! The flavors are bold and for my husband, it reminded him of tikka masala flavors. It did have some hints or notes of those spices but it was very delicious!!! Served hot and fresh! It also has a dipping sauce that pairs nicely with it! This is a definite must!!!! - fish tikka: this too is a must dish! It came out sizzling with amazing flavors and paired with a chutney that went so good with it! The fish was perfectly cooked! It was not dry or underdone! It was perfection! My husband loved this dish! - chicken tikka masala & butter chicken: while I can appreciate the dishes, it was overly sweet for our liking. It was still very flavorful and good, just too sweet for our taste buds. We let the server know and she quickly and kindly wanted to have the chef fix it for us, which we thought was amazing! She has so much confidence in her food, she stated her chefs make everything to order and will make it just the way you like it! You can order less sweet and more tomatoey, the spice levels go from 1-5. We opted for 2 which was perfect for each dish. Just the right amount of heat in my opinion! Tried this place for lunch after passing by on my way somewhere else and looking them up to see all the glowing reviews on Yelp. Service was a little meh at first but once our server/host took our order he was very attentive. I ordered the combo rice and some butter naan. Delicious. It's delicious. The rice had so many flavors and just tasted fresh and vibrant. The butter naan was perfectly done. But there's about 7 other types of naan you can try as well. Everything was so flavorful, and I appreciated that you could choose your spice level for the Butter Chicken and Sizzler Momo. I like spicy food but just enough heat to enhance the flavors. We did level 2 which I felt was perfect for me, but my husband who loves spicy food felt like he could go up another level. Our server suggested the spicy sauce on the side to add heat to our liking. Get ready because it's a journey with a lot of food. Everything was lovely. The Nepal Achar reminded me of a better potato salad with no potato. Everything is very fragrant. The gulag Jamum was a cross between a donut hole and a hush puppy but way better. I couldn't even eat half it was so good. Looking forward to leftovers tomorrow at work. The food was good, we really enjoyed the Lamb Biryani and the Sizzler Momo, but I think there should be a disclaimer when it comes to the lamb that there are bones in it. It's a bit of a choking hazard which while eating this I've had close calls with almost choking on a bone. The Drunken Noodles, were okay... we have had better. Admittedly, I was hesitant about Nepalese food since it tends to be healthier but less creamy than Indian dishes; but at Himalayan Kitchen, the Indian entrees retain the fullness of their flavors. It's like when a gay cousin shows up as his fantastic self at your kinda-conservative grandparents' house, and it's all good. You choose how much spice you can handle from two scales. Our waiter was very sweet, as were the owners. Fewer check-ins would've worked for us, as I was stuffing my face half the time someone stopped by, but they definitely err on the side of abundance when it comes to attention. Dinner here was easily one of the best meals I've had in SA. It sucked that the Cowboys lost the game we watched there, but we appreciate that the game was shown muted on most of their TVs (5/6?). We were seated after coming in apparently near closing (noticed how they were rushing a lot of things) and I felt bad but at least we weren't the last people out. Oops! I'm sorry for coming in late. Our server seemed to be quite the stand-up guy. One thing I did not like was the lack of a wet floor sign; if the person I saw slip didn't catch herself on a table I would have been singing a very different tune. All meals were ordered with chicken. Chicken Samosas had a nice fried crust that didn't fall apart when we chopped them up. Comes with what I believe to be a cilantro or cilantro-mint chutney and a tamarind sauce. Tamarind sauce was fine, but you can never put anything up against a cilantro-based chutney to me. Whatever other sauce is there would most likely lose, so it wasn't a fair fight for tamarind. Rogan Josh had a great, spicy smell that reminded me of Wingstop's atomic wings. My issue here was that there wasn't enough flavor for whatever reason. I don't know how something could smell so good but absolutely lack taste. Palak was probably my favorite and it was a dish I would probably not order myself based on the description. We were lucky and had our palak topped with cilantro instead of green onion - made it much better. It's a very tame spinach flavor imo but the spice combination here works so well. I'm getting more palak in the future. Tikka Masala is always a classic - this is as tomato-forward as most other tikka masalas and I'm not personally into things that taste too tomatoey but hey it was delicious regardless! You gotta really like tomato to fully enjoy tikka masala imo. Garlic naan - it's garlic naan. It's good, you know what to expect with the strong garlickiness! This place was a perfect balance between Indian and indochinese cuisine which was great for our large party and varying preferences. We got quite a bit of food for a party of 6 but the things that stood out were the tandoori chicken and the vegetable chowmein. The tandoori chicken came out of one of those fajita platters and was sizzling as it came out. Decide to come here since it was one of the highest rated Indian places around. The ambiance inside is typical, nothing cheap or as though you walked into a dive but not a high end restaurant. It's a casual atmosphere. The service is five star here, the staff is very friendly and all want to help serving you. We had Rajan (business owner) wait on us for most of the meal. He is such a nice person and willing to chat with his guests. You can tell he has an interest in his customers and his business. Thank you for being so nice.
