I LOVE this place! It's not just a restaurant- it's a feeling. It's easy to love and the humans working there that are so kind, generous, and make the absolute best food, too! I've never had a bad experience here and the chicken tiki masala sauce is always on point. The chicken is ALWAYS only white meat. When they ask for your name they say, "Please tell me your GOOD name." From the call to pickup they have a seamless experience and they are absolutely the best. The feeling is just YUM & fabulous. So is the food. read more

I did not realize this place was no longer Indian Cafe. And now it is Himalayan kitchen. I have not been to their Kaimuki restaurant and I always waited to visit there so I went in to order take out for one curry and two kinds of bread to share with my child. It was about 5:30pm on Sunday and I understand it was busy time. But it took 45 minutes even though he told me it would be 20 minutes. There were still so many people waiting and a couple of bite squad included. Some couples left after waited for a while without been helped. People who ordered ahead were waiting around also to get their food. The curry is decent and unfortunate that they are short of workers. read more

Himalayan Kitchen - A handwritten note of disappointment - Himalayan/Nepalese Near Me - Kailua, Hawaii

This location used to be India Café and the sign is still up so it's a little confusing but totally worth the try. I bought both shrimp and chicken Madras curry (coconut and tomato flavors) with rice and plain and jalapeño garlic naan . All was amazing! I prefer take out because the location is very small. The store is also located in a busy touristy center so finding parking is a little hard. The customer service is amazing and every time I try a new dish it's always delicious. There are vegetarian dishes and the workers are always willing to work with dietary needs. read more

ABSOLUTELY DISAPPOINTED!!! We used to love ordering from here, but tonight was horrible. We called in our usual order at 6:20pm. A chicken tikka plate and couple of orders of aloo gobi. We were told it would be about 45 min (which we've become accustomed to). We got down there in about an hour (coming from Kahalu'u). I walked up to the door and the young woman working in front was very rude to the customer she was dealing with. She was scolding him because his order was under the wrong name. Also, when the customer told her that he paid online, she yelled at him saying " YOU SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME THAT BEFORE I STARTED RINGING YOU UP!" Now it was my turn and our interaction was ok. It could have been worse. I got my order and went back home...opened up the containers and the whole order was wrong. I've tried to reach out to management about this, but have had no success. read more

First off, next to times Kailua; if your face the store it'll be on the right side a few shops down. Their sign hasn't been changed yet so you may see India Cafe. I loved it! Love the service too!!! It's a small restaurant about 4 small tables inside 4 outside. I recommend to order appetizers and come with A good attitude, book or if you like to scroll on your phone then that because it's a small crew. That being said you may have to wait a bit if their busy. Bring patience hehe To me it's worth it! I waited less than 10 min for my fritters and 5 minutes later my food was out. I came on a Sunday afternoon. The curry is thick; I got mine with lamb; it was good but I realized it Didn't need meat it was good on its own. I loved the garlic Naan hope I spelled that right. I ate like a piggy I hope no one who knows me seen me eating hahaha It has a mom & pops feel, I got my own plate and water let me be clear though the owner is very attentive & super friendly; I feel spoiled. He treated each customer the same. I watched as a few customers asked a ton of questions, a few repeat ones & even compared to other foods and gladly answered with a big smile. Im coming back! Many blessings on this restaurant! read more

After a long day of activities in Kailua, Indian food sounded like it would definitely hit the spot! This location has a signage that says "India Cafe" - they said they are changing it to Himalayan Kitchen. It's located next to Donut Kong and the book store if you get lost. I liked that they offer a bunch of different types of bread, and got some garlic naan that paired well with my butter chicken curry - chefs special! They have a lot of different options on their menu and I definitely want to try more curries like the tikka madrass. read more

Let me start by saying that I'm from an area that has an enormous Indian community, and tons of amazing Indian food options - that being said, this was HANDS DOWN the best Indian food I've ever had. The meat was seasoned to perfection, and tender. The sauces were savory, with a hint of sweetness, and THE NAAN. The naan was possibly the best bread I've ever eaten in my life. By the looks and taste, I believe they make it themselves, and it was incredibly good. A $3 serving could have easily served both my husband and I - but we love bread, so we ordered 2. Overall, FANTASTIC Indian food, incredible naan, and the service was wonderful as well. The gentleman who helped us was very friendly, and even educated us a bit about how to set an Indian table, and serve food. It was awesome read more

Ordered at counter for take out (there's no dine in these days), they said would take 30 min. Took 70 min. Jeez. Worse, when after 45 min we asked the status, they rudely lectured us on how they were doing their best and each meal is prepared fresh and blah blah blah, instead of just giving us their best updated time estimate. There weren't that many people ordering. Just a normal weeknight, no big rush or anything. Not sure what was the problem. Maybe they were prioritizing door dash orders. Whatever the case, 70 min is ridiculous. At least warn us so we can decide whether to order or to go elsewhere. The food came, and it was ok, nothing special, kind of bland, but ok. read more

I've been wanting to try Himalayan Kitchen for a while now. My parents had tried it before but only the location in town. Since this one is a 10 minute drive from home, I decided to come here by myself after a quick swim at Kailua District Park. The place is quite small but with a location in that complex, it's bound to be pretty small. You can get your own water, silverware, and take-out boxes; not a problem at all. I ordered take-out and it took approximately 15 minutes. Not too bad. I was basic and ordered the chicken tikka masala with a spice level of 5/10. It was good but I wish I had ordered it with a spice level of 7/10. I will be back here again (probably during summer) to try another more interesting dish with more spice. The sign outside the establishment read "India Cafe" so don't get confused. Parking can be hard to find depending on the time of day. read more

Unfortunately I wasn't able to take pics of the food which makes me pretty sad because it was delicious! The lamb biryani is divine. Highly recommended! It was flavorful, with a good amount of meat. The portion was pretty generous. The raita that came with it was nice and creamy. Great to take the edge off of the biryani spice. We also had the chicken vindaloo which was flavorful but found the chicken breast pieces to be too large and a bit dry. The size of the potatoes was much smaller than the chicken. I really wished it were a bit more uniform. It came with basmati rice. I do so appreciate that they separate the entree from the rice. The garlic naan-chef's kiss. Had to get 2 because I wasn't about to share. I ordered the paneer kulcha but they either forgot to give that to me or they may have given it to someone else's takeout order. I was really looking forward to having it but by the time we discovered that it was missing it was too late to go back. Lost money on that. It's a smaller space and they only do takeout which is fine but when it get busy be prepared to wait around 45 minutes to an hour. I was told about 30-35 mins but they were fairly busy with the doordash/ubereats orders. The food is all made to order so it does take some time to get things pushed out of the kitchen. Overall I'd recommend this place. The food is flavorful and a satisfactory amount. The gal who took the orders and passed out the orders was friendly and welcoming. It may seem a little pricey; however, the flavor is worth every cent! read more

Himalayan Kitchen - Chicken tikka masala lamb saag with garlic naan and rice. Portions are generous too this isn't even half of my order - Himalayan/Nepalese Near Me - Kailua, Hawaii

Decided to check this out when a yelp alert notified me of a new place for himalayan/nepal cuisine. I am so glad we tried this place because the food is actually really good. Thus place would have been a solid 5 if it wasnt for a few things. Yelpers please note that although on here it is called "Himalayan Kitchen" you will never find this yummy place by this name so look for "India Cafe". I also recommebd parking closer to the end of the Time supermarket and walking as the parking tends to be sparse. The staff here was very friendly. Ordering food here takes a bit of time as it is partial service. You basically order at the cash register, pour your own water, grab your plates and forks and napkins and find a seat. There are really only 4 tables as fellow yelpers mentioned so hopefully you can grab one. When you have a toddler in the mix this place is hard to eat at because you have to get everything and there are no highchairs at the moment but they do bring out the food to you. Their Chicken Tikka Masala and Chana Masala are delicious. My only complaints were the portion sizes for rice. It was assumed that all of our meals come with rice. All the rice comes in a bowl but it was barely enough for 3 and if you want more you have to pay for it. Also, their spiciest level was not spicy at all to which I was actually able to try it (and usually I cannot handle spicy). Lastly, I found a very small piece of chicken bone in the Chicken Tikka Masala and so glad it was not my toddler who came across it. Aside from all this, this place is so delicious and the guys that run this place are very friendly. I think this place is better as a take out place because it is warm inside and too many people walking by you on the outside. read more

Delicious. Naan is perfectly cooked but medium spice is not spicy enough so I would suggest asking for more if you want a kick.

Great take out food. Always order ahead to take away. Try the mattar paneer and garlic naan. It can be too spicy! We always get 0/10 spice. read more

I stopped by their Kailua location today, unknowingly 5 minutes after they closed. One of the staff members opened the door and graciously offered to still take my order. He was incredibly nice, patient & explained the various dishes to me & helped me find what I might like. I got the chicken tikka madrass w/ rice & a side of samosas. The food was hands down incredible! So much flavor. They scale their spice level 1-10, so you can be sure to get the spice level you really want. The spicy tomato dipping sauce for the samosas was unreal! I can't recommend this place enough--customer service + quality of the food was outstanding! read more

During this Quarantine time, my neighbors and I switch off to get take out. We were all craving Indian food & we decided on Himalyan kitchen (formerly Indian cafe) in Kailua. We called in and the man was busy but very nice. I got the skewered Chicken Tikka & Saag Dip & they ordered the Butter Chicken, Basmati rice & Garlic Naan. He said 20 minutes to be ready which is how long the Kaneohe to Kailua drive is! When I got there, his set up is a table blocking the entrance and you rang the bell. Menus already displayed on tables and utensils/napkins. Truly a take out experience. Uber eats was waiting & I had to wait 10 minutes for him. I had 3 orders, and when he forgot my Chicken Tikka I had to wait more but he comped me Samosas which were delicious! When I got home the tribe was starving. The Chicken Tikka is cooked skewered but taken off and large pink pieces on a bed of Basmati rice, side salad and a vegetable red sauce for $14.95. Saag dip is a tasty greenish cheese dip served with Naan for $5.95. Just wish we got more for our money. Butter chicken was a hit for $13.95 (served alone) Samosas had a yummy dipping sauce, and I definitely would order 2 more next time. Overall, it was worth the drive over. They are located in Kailua Town between Times Market & Bookends. The Indian Cafe sign is still up too. read more

As much as I wanted to give this place a whopping 5 stars, that is not happening here today. Question: Are these the same owners from Kaimuki? Moving on...Seeing the amazing reviews on here for quite a while now and driving past them almost daily has had me dreaming and craving of what once was. What once was the memories and flavor explosions I've had myself in the past from this hot spot. Earlier this week I drove by thinking I'd pop in, order, and take home some deliciousness - silly me. I had not looked up their hours as when I got there they were closed. Even more eager a few days later, checked to ensure they were open and made my call. Excited that someone answered; I proceeded to place my order of their beautifully constructed Himchuli Chat, toasty jalapeño garlic naan & roti, savory vegetable samosas, popular butter chicken curry, and the biagan bharta. Whomever answered the phone was not very friendly and the ordering seemed very rushed. I was concerned they had not gotten my order correct, especially because I kept getting cut off with them asking if that was it. When I was finally done ordering, they told me it would be about 25 minutes and just hung up the phone without a goodbye. I put my best thoughts forward in thinking they were just busy. Finally arrived a half an hour later and approached the door. I was greeted by a young female who was on the phone the entire time. Sometimes I could not tell if she was talking to me or the person on the phone. She asked my name, rang me up, I tapped my card, and she handed me my bag and walked off to continue her conversation on the phone. I say conversation because it was definitely not another order she was taking. Eager to suffice my cravings, I immediately opened the bag in my car. It all looked and smelled amazing! Tearing pieces off the roti and jalapeño garlic naan I was instantly satisfied! Both were Perfect! Popped a bite of vegetable samosa and was continued to be Wowed! I felt we were really on a roll here - - - I knew I had to dig into the himchuli chat next. First bite seemed refreshing from the yogurt, however an extremely salty after taste followed. I really could not get passed it. I closed the container and figured I would try again at home. Upon arriving home I made my little mela display of all the items on my counter. The only items I had not tasted yet were the biagan bharta and butter chicken curry (family favorite). I am saddened to share that in the end I honestly cannot get pass the extreme saltiness of the biagan bharta, butter chicken curry, and the himchuli chat. It was just beyond me how this could have happened. I have never received a dish at this level of saltiness anywhere, not even from them in the past. For a few moments I thought it was just my own taste buds, however my son confirmed that it was really salty. I covered it up and placed in the fridge, sad that my husband would also be coming home to eat this meal. Is it enough for me to call it quits here? I don't even know at this point, I can't tell you because I know at some time they were always serving up amazing flavor. It was also my old friend and coworker whom turned us on to Himalayan Kitchen. read more

I'll start off by saying that the food is great and previously (pre-COVID) we had a great time here. Friendly service. Delicious food. Everything! However, we ordered a big order last night from here for my sister's birthday. We called it in and they said it would take 35 minutes. We got their maybe five minutes earlier and the food wasn't ready. No big deal. We can wait. However, it wasn't clear how to wait: should we wait in the car? There was also a line. So one person waited in line and another waited in the car. The person in the car called after waiting for an additional 10 minutes to ask what was going on and if we should wait in line or the car. Whoever answered the phone, a woman, answered "There's a FUCKING line. That's we we encourage everyone to practice patience during this time." Whoa. That was really uncalled for. We were shocked at the behavior of this person. It was a total turn off. The person waiting in line did get our food, 30 minutes after the time they said to come. And to be fair, the owner(?) a man was the one who gave us the food, and we remembered him from last time from being super friendly and professional. He apologized for the delay giving us extra rice. My issue is whoever spoke on the phone with us and swore to a customer. We were just trying to see what the COVID protocol was for this store. Had they told us to come in 40 minutes or even an hour, it wouldn't have been a problem and then we wouldn't have been waiting, asking them what to do. It was uncalled for and upsetting to be spoken to that why and kind of dampened the evening of my sister's birthday. Especially because we really loved this place and think the owner is so so nice. Now, I'm nervous to go again after being treated so poorly. I don't want to slam this place because they deserve high reviews for their delicious food. But I do think that owners should speak to whoever their employee is to correct this kind of behavior. read more

I've tried so many times to like this place. Their food is hit and miss. And now a major miss since they caught on fire. Can't imagine what happened there. I do know when we walked to the back looking to see if parking was an option, chicken - raw chicken was defrosting outside on a sheet pan with flies on it. Enjoy that with your curry. I can't even imagine what got me sick when I ate there. read more

So so good!! We've tried many restaurants trying to find our favorite curry spot and this is it! I can usually take some spice but be mindful that medium spicy is much spicier than you'd expect. Pair any curry with garlic naan and it's the perfect dinner. The food is always prepared fast and I believe they're only doing takeout at the moment - they're always super kind and helpful. Highly recommend. read more

This place is the worst Indian food on the island. We have been ordering from them for a while now and each time, there is almost always something wrong with the food. This time, the mutter paneer was tossed into a very food color red "tandoori sauce" & paneer was chewy like plastic and chicken Tikka madras ...seemed like they took the sauce from another dish and tossed the chicken in it and seemed like old chicken from earlier in the week. Being Indian myself, this is not Indian food. Do not waste your time ordering food from here. read more

The place is really small. There are about 4 tables. It's really crowded. People are constantly coming in and out. The service is extremely slow. They didn't even acknowledge us for 20 minutes. We finally ordered and waited 40 mins and the food still wasn't out so we asked and he said another 10 mins. The rice was cold and old. The tandoori chicken was really dry. And the vegetable komra didn't have the usual ingredients in it so i think they brought me a different dish by accident but I didn't want to wait again for them to change it so I just ate it. The regular naan and garlic naan (bread) was good and tasty. read more

So the third try was the charm! The food was perfect this time now that we know our spice level tolerance and we've figured out the regional differences that are a must with Indian food. We ordered 3 dishes again, butter chicken, matar paneer and chicken tikka madrass. All good, but the standout was their madrass sauce. A new favorite for us. I'm so happy to give these guys my money. I'd really love to see this location improve their eat in dining experience by becoming full service for drinks but for now I'll take the awesome Indian food in Kailua. One thing to note, this is a 2 man operation. So patience is key. It's one guy taking your order, bringing food out, dealing with to go orders and cashing everyone out. So keep that in mind. The dining space is small and it's self service for table settings, but their to go game is strong, so that's a great option. read more

The wait time is a bit long, probably due to being under staffed but the food isnt bad. I got take out with my girlfriend and we enjoyed it.

My husband and I have been going to Himalayan Kitchen for almost two years now and the last time we went, it seemed like the food quality took a nose dive. We ordered right as soon as they would accept orders and we could tell the food was not made fresh - the chicken was dry and the bread was dry/hard. We hope they change back to their usual level of quality - otherwise, there's plenty of other tasty-fresh food Kailua offers. read more
