I am a returning Kailua resident and I am so glad this dosa place opened right here in town. Our friends and I had the chef's recommendation, a plain cheese dosa, build your own and the plain. The dosas and accompanying chutney and lentil sambar were tasty. We brought our own beer and wine and sat outside which was pleasant. The staff were accommodating and sweet. This eatery was clean and organized. If you enjoy Indian vegetarian food or would like to try it, dosas are highly recommended. Dosas are made from white lentils which are very high in protein. The soaked lentils are blended into a pancake like batter with rice flour and cooked on a griddle like a crepe. Dosas are gluten free and are very nutritious. I have been here a couple times but I guess never did a review until today. We stopped by around lunch time on a Sunday and the place was busy. Thankfully there were tables open for us to sit inside. The choices are a bit limited in what they serve so if you aren't a dosa fan, this place probably isn't for you. We got the kids cheese dosa and the ganeshpuri dosa, plus the idli. My kids weren't a fan of the dosa so I ended up eating their kids cheese one. The dosa reminded me of a sourdough bread. I wish it came with a mild cheese to really taste the dosa. The ganeshpuri dosa with the sambar soup and coconut chutney was good. But my husband liked the tomato chutney better. The idli was fun to try with the sambar soup but again another bread like item really wasn't great for my calorie deficit diet. Service was fast for the food but forgetful for order items like the idli not coming out until 5 minutes after our 3 dosa orders. And then having to ask for the hibiscus iced tea 5 more minutes later. Again the place seemed to get busier after we left and there were only two people working. Very disappointed very kind staff but I walked into this location near my surgeons clinic and I really needed to eat and I grew up making crepes and I have to say truly sad that it tasted burn with a side of Nutella. I let the staff know and I said it tasted and he finished my sentence and said, "burnt" and I said, "yes!" I wish I would have take a picture of both sides. I paid $11.49 and tipped 20%. Im not too sure if they burnt it on purpose or if this is just how they do their crepes but when I let them know they didn't seem concerned. I am a yelper so doing reviews like this on a local business is not my favorite thing to do. My husband said I should have taken it back from the beginning but I kept trying to eat it one because my sugar is low but two because I wanted to not waste food but I did bring it up and show them. The proprietor says they will open a branch on University in a year or so where Bubbies used to be currently getting renovated. I am looking forward to that because I don't know how frequently I can make the drive to Kailua. If this place opens on university I'll go every other week. My South Indian father in law and cousin complimented them and said the sambar was really good! High praise! Parking is easy in the metered lot where half the meters are broken anyway so can't pay. I got the spicy one with masala powder and chilis in the potato mixture. If this is the same place that had a stall at ohana marketplace on ward many years ago then they've improved and perfected their technique. Best to eat it fresh there - the half I ate at the restaurant definitely tasted better than the other half I had after being in the air fryer at home. A dosa is made from a fermented batter of ground black lentils and rice- think Southeast Asian Crepe. I came by after shopping at the Sunday market nearby- one of the vendors I was shopping at was enjoying their Chef's recommendation dosa ($19) with potato masala, mozzarella cheese, tomato, avocado, olives. I decided to go all in and ordered the "Full Belly" dosa for $20 and a refreshing mango lassi for $7. The full belly dosa was made with potato masala, goat cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, avocado. If you know me, if there's something on the menu with goat cheese- I'm going to try it. The dosa came with sambar soup made with lentils and vegetables, that was great to dip the dosa in and slurp on the side. You also get a chutney- offering a choice between coconut or tomato chutney. I LOVE this place! I'd never had a dosa before but love Indian food so had to try this place. Dosas are Indian crepes, but with a better texture. Somehow they are soft and also chewy...hard to describe it, you'll just have to try it! I have only ever gotten The Supreme, it's so good I've never tried anything else. It has smashed potatoes masala, sun dried tomatoes, and spinach, I substitute avocados for the cheese. I've tried with with both the coconut chutney and the tomato chutney...I can't pick a favorite- they're both so good, but so different. Dosas also come with soup. I can't recall what it is, but it's really delicious. They have sparkling water and some canned and bottled juice or green tea options to drink. They have indoor and outdoor dining. The outdoor dining area is cute and has umbrellas which is nice on sunny days to protect from the sun. If you work anywhere near here it's a great place for a quick yet healthy lunch. They also have told me to call ahead to order or order online, which can be great in a hurry or a short lunch break. I ended up ordering the Chef's Recommendation which was potato masala, mozzarella cheese, tomatoes; avocado, olives for $19. It came with some Sambar soup. It was my first time eating dosa or sambar soup and i really enjoyed it! You could get it was tomato or coconut chutney and I chose the tomato which was like a salsa. The potato has a curry sauce which was yum and the avocado nice and fresh. The whole crepe was really good! Best to eat the crepe fresh there because it's nice and crispy! The ambience of the inside seating is small but had adequate seats on a friday lunch. It's a nice quiet place to chat and talk story and relax. Very delicious! This was my first time trying the food here, and I loved it. It was so tasty and fresh! I ordered the Full Belly Dosa. It's a thin savory crepe made with potato masala, goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes, spinach, and avocado. It comes with a bowl of Sambar Soup and a side order of either coconut or tomato chutney. I chose coconut. The soup is made of lentils and vegetables and is very delicious. It's a $20 meal but a meal for two unless you are very hungry. Run by a husband and wife who are always ard at work behind the counter. Food is very flavorful, filling and healthy. At first glance a dosa order wirh side may seem small, however, it is quite filling. I usually order a full belly and the combo of goat cheese, spinach potato and other toppings with the fermented wrap is very savory. The crunchy texture of the golden dosa perfectly contrasts with the fillings and the sambar soup. Ambiance is a casual sit down atmosphere with low tables, outside bench seating and high top running along the wall. Doors are sliding glass like a house which is different. I always leave full, with a full belly, (pun) and feel good the rest of the day with no stomach ache or indigestion. If you aren't uses to lentils or fermented beans, etc ir have a sensitive stomach. First off, the place was very clean. I was greeted right away and being my first time, asked for recommendations. Everything was explained well, and while lentils don't sound exciting, I was pleasantly surprised at how good everything tasted. I am no expert on Indian food but I imagine the food here is a bit of a fusion style vs. very traditional. I also ordered the California which seemed like an indian version of a quesadilla. The tomato chutney also seemed like an Indian version of salsa. It was tasty and I didn't feel that kanak attack after like I might have with an actual quesadilla. The dosa was good but a few things can really make this place a stand out winner. I would recommend the use of cilantro, bay leaves, and more rye and chili powder into the masala of the dosa itself. You only get either a coconut chutney or a tomato chutney with the dosa (of course, sambar you get). But a business that makes dosas should be serving both (this was what made me rate this 3 stars vs 4). Ordering 2 chutneys was $1 more. I would also recommend tomato chutney to not have pure tomato in it and instead have red chili pepper and garlic as the predominant flavor profile. The owner of this restaurant was super kind and considerate. I think this place has the potential to come even farther with some adjustment. The ambiance can also do a bit of work.
