Had lunch here. Food came out quickly, the staff working there was nice, and prices for the lunch special are reasonable. You get a ton off food so you could probably split it into two meals. The chicken was tender and flavored well, the curry was also tasty. The naan paired well with it all. The basmati rice was a little bland though. But that's minor. Carry-out focused menu. They are known for their naan bread preparations. Conveniently located in downtown Kailua. The food is hot and ready on time. On this occasion the garlic lamb was good, the lamb biriyani was ok (lots of rice ) the Daal lentils were good, The chicken tikka sauce was ok but the chicken as bland. There are different levels of spicy-heat to choose from. If you don't know, you might want to pick one level lower than your first thought. The staff are pleasant and helpful. This review is based on my past experience and whether I can make something better at home. This place seems to have a great takeout business. There's not much seating, except for a couple of tables outside the restaurant. The gentleman running the place is super friendly. As for the food, I found it to be hit or miss. The Himalayan curry was very tasty, but the chicken tandoori was very disappointing. The tandoori locked any sort of flavor and it was dry. I was really looking forward to having a good tandoori, which I haven't had in a very long time. The chaat and naan were well made, but the basmati rice wasn't prepared to standard. Received an email back from them saying menus were attached, nothing was attached so I followed up to kindly request them and they went oh, I guess we'll send them later.... Great option for Indian food in Kailua! We both loved our dishes - Lamb Bhunas and Chicken Tikka Madras. Spice levels 6 and 7 were about right for us as spicy enjoyers as it packed a good amount of heat! The garlic jalapeño naan is great for soaking up the sauces. Service for takeout was great! My bf and I used to love coming here before they reopened . Tonight was a bad experience. She said our order would take 40 mins but it actually ended up being 2 hours just for the food to not be what we ordered after confirming with the her twice. We ordered tikka masala which is usually orange but this one was bright red just full of tomato sauce. On top of that she was not at all apologetic. The lamb wasn't cooked, it was hard. Located in the same shopping center as Times and Donut King (in the old India Cafe spot), Himalayan Kitchen is a small shop that serves big flavor. Ordered two paneer dishes: mattar and sahi. Check the spice levels. 3 was good for us and still had kick (more kick than you'd expect at 3). Good flavor and perfect with the naan, which was fluffy and fresh. Compared to Kamana (our go to Indian and the best on the island), this place was pretty good and way better than other spots. Good portions and prices too. Will definitely be back. read more

They have lunch specials which includes curry bowl with curry of the day, and it comes in a vegetarian or meat option & includes basmati rice. Tip 1: They are short staffed so don't have dine in, and you order from the door. If no one is out front just say "hello!" From the door and someone will come out to take your order. Tip 2: The sign above the sidewalk says India Cafe, not Himalayan Cafe, but you are in the right place! I love naan, and plain naan is classic for a reason. You can't go wrong with a classic, but I also equally love Keema Naan (it has ground lamb with onion and spices - delicious) or garlic naan. Portions are huge! My lunch bowl was enough for two meals. Ordered at the counter. I like this shopping area cause there is a lot of public outdoor seating. We ordered the Tikka Masala Plate and the Tikka Masala Curry. Couldn't forget the Garlic Naan either. Didn't know what the difference would be between the two entrees. Was quoted a 20 minute wait. We easily waited about 40-45 minutes for our food. I would highly recommend phone ordering or ordering ahead of time and not if you're expecting fast to go service. There was only 1 person ahead of me and 2 orders after us. We got our food and boy was it a lot of food. The plate was a dry rub chicken covered in sautéed onion and spices. It came on a bed of basmati rice, a side salad, and stewed spinach and veggies (carrot, eggplant, squash). The curry was what you expected, creamy tomato based curry over basmati rice. The plate was good, but just a lot of spices for me. The chicken was a bit dry. The best part of the plate in my opinion was the stewed spinach side. That I could eat an entire plate of. The naan was very good as well. Don't overlook them when you're ordering. It's a great thing to add and eat along side a curry dish. Comes with an herb sauce to dip in as well. Food was excellent. My friend and I stopped by for a late lunch on Sunday, 5/26/24, at around 1:30p, since we were in Kailua. The night before we researched Himalayan Kitchen and decided that we wanted to eat here for lunch. We were happy that it wasn't busy when we visited. I ordered the Lamb Saag and Samosas. I ordered my Saag spice level at a 4 on a 1-10 spiciness scale, 10 being very spicy. Fortunately, the spice level was just right for me, it had a hint of spiciness that I enjoyed. The Saag lamb curry was rich and savory with the spinach blending in well with the spices and lamb. The lamb was nice and tender as well. I enjoyed it with my rice. The 2 Vegetable Samosas were good. I dipped it in the cilantro sauce that complemented the deep fried appetizer. I wanted another dipping sauce, also. Usually, I've had it with 2 different types of dipping sauce flavors the mint cilantro, and tamarind chutney sauces. At Himalayan Kitchen It comes with only 1 sauce flavor, the cilantro sauce. Therefore, I asked for another cilantro sauce for my second Samosa. Unfortunately, this place didn't have the tamarind chutney sauce. But, I still enjoyed my Samosas. My friend ordered the chicken Tikka plate at a 1 spiciness level. It came with rice, a coconut curry cauliflower vegetable side, and a lettuce salad with the same cilantro dressing that accompanied the Samosa. She enjoyed the grilled Tikka chicken and said everything was tasty and just right for her palate. Overall, we enjoyed our lunch and service. We were happy that we found seats to eat inside. We saw many people coming in to order take out. We will indeed visit Himalayan Kitchen again when we are in Kailua. read more

Do not use the Order Online option on their website - they will steal your money!!! I am very upset with this restaurant. We live in Kailua and have been going here for years. We used the online order that is posted on their website and then went to get our food. They claimed they never got out order and that the online order doesn't work and that THE OWNER KNOWS that it doesn't work but hasn't taken it down. So, we figured they didn't get our order so we wouldn't get charged and just ordered again while there and waited another 45 minutes. Well, guess what?? They still charged us. $80. We got take-out there once a week for years and put up with the long wait for the food or them forgetting stuff in our orders (check your bag) all the time.... we still left tips and wanted to support a local business, but will never order from there again. The lunch special is really good. The website says it specializes in vegan curries, but the meat based options are very good too. The lunch special means you don't know exactly which curry you'll get, so it's a great option for variety. First off - Kailua Himalayan Kitchen is NOT permanently closed - it is OPEN FOR BUSINESS!! They ARE closed Mondays, to give all staff a day off, but are otherwise open for lunch from about 11:30 or so to about 1:30 or 2pm, and again for dinner starting at 4:30. All this as of July 29, 2025. Now - as for the food - EXCELLENT Indian food. We always get the creamy chicken bunhas (spelling?) and chicken vindaloo with plain naan bread. You can specify the spice level to your taste. Portions are large enough to either serve two or use as two meals. Basmati rice comes with the orders. We have lived in Kailua off and on since 1982 and this is our current favorite restaurant in Kailua for lunch or dinner. Note that in the past they have had problems with both kitchen equipment and keeping staff, but from our last several experiences, those days are past - although they are sometimes slow to answer the phone if they are very busy - so I'll just go down, order in person, scroll my iPad while waiting, and then take it home. They do have a few tables now that we are past the COVID era, so if you want to eat there and people watch, you can do that too. read more

I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to Indian food, so I did the basic thing and ordered what I saw everyone else on the internet get: Buttered Chicken and garlic Naan. Honestly, it was delicious. I ordered it with a level 3 spice, should have gone hotter, but I'm not a complete rookie and know there's a difference between Asian hot and American hot. It came with like some source of herb-sauce... not sure what I was supposed to do with it, but it was great. There's no seating, so that can be a bit of a challenge (we went across the street to Down to Earth). The service was great, the guy there was very sweet. There is only room for about three small tables inside, but you can eat on two tables outside the door (watch for flies outside and clean your own table). The ambiance was the beautiful paintings hanging on the wall and the ethnic makeup of the cook and operators who may have been speaking Pakistani. All in all, the Chicken Tikka looked and tasted like authentic Middle Eastern. I will try their other dishes next time. read more

A blessing in disguise, a serendipitous find... the taste of their chicken tikka plate... broke da mouth! If I could savor this taste as my last meal on earth, I'd go peacefully, smiling. The white cubed chicken morsels were sumptuously covered with the most familiar and fabulous taste. The quantity was so generous atop basamati rice also came with salad and served with another concoction unbeknownst to me. My eyes and mouth were fixed on the chicken tikka like I was in a trance- seriously tasted that yummy!!! The garlic naan bread was subtly garlicky yet delicious, next time, I'd eat it right away and sop up the sauce. I get it, we were given a plastic spoon and knife but no folk. The light bulb goes on...eating with our hands makes sense for this type of meal. I always order mango lassi to help me quench any food spice heat. Today I ordered level one & thank goodness cuz my drink fell off the log we were sitting on and landed upside down in the sand. Thankyou guardian angel... as I reached down it stayed intact and no sand had entered the bent straw or plastic lid. So glad we found this eatery as when I tried to do a Yelp search for a lunch restaurant in current location the error message came on... This spot is the place to go to for the best Himalayan food! I would recommend places your order about 30 mins-1 hour before you plan on having dinner because this place gets super busy. It's take-out only but it's still crazy busy. We got their butter chicken curry, shrimp biryani, chicken tikka plate, jalapeño garlic naan, & the bhatura. The butter chicken curry was my all time favorite! The curry sauce isn't too salty, has a perfect butter taste & goes well on top the white rice. The shrimp biryani is like their version of fried rice, with peas, raisins, protein of choice & spice level of your choice. We got spice level 4 and it was pretty spicy but the taste was so good! I could just order that and eat that as my main dish. The chicken tikka kabobs were a little on the dry side, but it was still tasty and I used the sauces it comes with to make it a little less dry. The jalapeño naan & the bhatura was so good too. Fluffy, tasty & I love the chewiness. The staff was very friendly and my step dad knows him, so he introduced us to him & he recommended these dishes to us. We've eaten here a couple of times and it's been okay. Today it was bad. The filling in the samosas was spoiled, the oil they were cooked in tasted old and nasty, and the vegetable korma was a completely different dish than usual. Last time it was pale and creamy, nicely spiced, with a variety of vegetables. We liked it. This time it was bright red, had only zucchini and a pea or two, and was not properly spiced, if at all. It was awful, and reminded me of tomato paste out of a can with some zucchini thrown in. I had to throw the samosas away, as well as most of the vegetable korma. Disappointing, a waste of time and money, and I hope I don't get food poisoning. No consistency here, or basic quality control. Food establishment success 101: If you want good reviews, you need to provide fresh, tasty food, and good customer service -- consistently! Pretty basic. My friend was sick and really wanted food delivered from Yama's over at the Enchanted Lake Shopping Center, but my other friend and I were pressed for time and needed to get takeout within 40 min. His second craving was for Himalayan cuisine, and fortunately, Himalayan Kitchen over at the nearby Kailua Shopping Center was available to take our order! We got: - garlic naan ($3.50): so freaking gigantic and tasty. The bread was rich in garlic for sure. - jalapeño garlic naan ($4.50): also gigantic and tasty. The garlic was strong here, the jalapeño, not so much. - chicken tikka plate ($13.95): the chicken was dry without the sauce. The basmati rice and curry of the day it was served with was solid, though! - butter chicken curry ($14.95): extremely flavorful and delicious. By far, the crown jewel of this meal. If takeout from Himalayan Kitchen Kailua was good, I'd imagine that enjoying this on the outdoor patio of the Kaimuki location would be that much more epic! I wish I was making this up. Two days ago through Uber Eats my boyfriend ordered the chicken tikka masala curry (which comes with rice) and the garlic naan bread. The whole order came tightly wrapped in a plastic bag... with one complimentary FLY. It was hard to show it in the photo I took, but it was definitely flying around in the bag. We don't know how this wasn't noticed as the order was bagged up. We're pretty grossed out. But I'm not surprised: a couple of years ago when this restaurant opened I popped in looking for lunch. The door was propped open, food was uncovered behind the counter, and multiple flies were flying around. I left. I told my boyfriend this, but he really wanted to try their curry anyway. Not again, he said. However, the garlic naan bread was delicious (put into its own paper bag, so I deemed it was sanitary) but my boyfriend described the curry as not any better than the curry served at Whole Foods. I have been doing this long enough to know a few things. One bad meals does not indicate a terrible restaurant. But that said , the one time I ate here was TERRIBLE. A little background, I've been eating at and enjoying the original location in Kaimuki since it opened. The friendly owner and staff are familiar and it has been one of my neighborhood faves. I came to the Kailua shop for take out and ordered chicken vindaloo and rice, simple right? Wrong. So the chucked was cut into large chunks, it was chicken breast, dry, hard and tasteless, like chunks of wood. That should not be served, this is what happens when chicken is cooked, the refrigerated or frozen, then reheated several times thru this cycle. It was inedible. Likewise the rice was long grain, hard and dried out, no nice fresh rice smell, terrible texture. Very disappointing. One more comment, why does the sign read India Cafe, when the business is listed as Himalayan Kitchen? For the past 20 yrs these have been two different businesses. I recently visited this Indian restaurant and was blown away by the flavors of the dishes. I ordered the chicken tikka masala and the saag lamb, both of which were absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend ordering them with medium spice, as it adds just the right amount of heat without overwhelming the flavors. The saag lamb was a bit too spinach-y for my personal taste, but it was still a satisfying dish overall. I paired both dishes with two orders of plain naan, which were fresh and delicious. However, make sure to ask for the mint sauce and chutney sauce as they don't give it automatically. To quench my thirst, I ordered the mango lassi, which my fiancé also really enjoyed. The lassi was creamy, smooth, and had the perfect balance of sweetness. Overall, I would definitely recommend this Indian restaurant to anyone looking for authentic, flavorful Indian cuisine. The chicken tikka masala and saag lamb are both must-try dishes, and make sure to pair them with some naan and the delicious mint and chutney sauces.
