The food was EXCELLENT, but there are some major issues here. Overall this is a place you'll love, do come here if you're down for Nepalese food, just be aware of these things: Pros: The manager was very kind and helpful, quite a delightful guy. The food was indeed authentic and delicious, the naan was cooked perfectly, curries well-spiced, and the tandoori chicken smacked. The atmosphere was also very nice, when you walk up the stairs it feels like you are on a rooftop restaurant in Nepal. Cons: ONE WAITRESS I WANTED TO PUNCH IN THE FACE. It was clear she did not want me to eat there, she slammed cups and plates down, talked to me like I was a bratty 5-year-old, and invaded my space in a really awkward way with her hands. Relative to the Ala Moana Shopping Center Restaurant the chicken curry was a bit more saltier however equally delicious. However what really alarmed me is the sanitary conditions. Within 1.5 hours I saw 4 live American cockroaches about an inch plus in size crawling around. Absolutely Disgusting! I can imagine there's more crawling around when the restaurant closes. Picture this: You're head-over-heels in love. The wedding is one week away and your soon-to-be-father-in-law wants to take you, the fiance and mother-in-law-to-be to dinner. No big deal, right? WRONG!! He wants to take you somewhere "different". Somewhere in Kaimuki... Somewhere with *curry*... And you suffer from reflux so you are TERRIFIED!! "Nooooooo!!! Anywhere else, babe!!!" was my reaction to when beau said that we were going to Himalayan Kitchen. "I don't like curry!!! I can't eat that stuff! " I continued in the car but my objections fell on compassionate but deaf ears that said "I'm sorry, baby- it's something new and we can go get something to eat afterward." I kept quiet but was still worried. As we pulled into the paid parking lot ($3) by 12th Avenue restaurant and Angelo Pietro's, parking was a little scarce for a Thursday night. Not sure what was going on but we did find a spot near Paul Mitchell's school of hair and walked toward my doom. I could hear "pompus funebre" playing as we approached. The restaurant is on the second floor of the building with a little village feel as you walk up the staircase to an open verazza with a gazebo. The patio is furnished with outdoor tables with large umbrellas under an open sky with twinkle lights strung overhead. There is an indoor dining room that has several tables with large, open windows sans glass panels. I couldn't help but admire how charming the atmosphere was. Still nervous about the food and my body's reaction to it, I took the menu and studied it. Lots of curry... lots of chicken and lamb... and naan. I saw pics from other yelpers an appetizer called momo and it looked safe enough to try so I ordered that and let me tell you.... it was *DELICIOUS*! Holy smokes it was so perfectly cooked with the right amount of meat and veggies and a fresh, spicy dipping sauce that I felt so much more confident in being adventurous with the rest of the menu... But then I remembered that I had to fit in a wedding dress and saved a few menu items for the following visit. Everything we ordered that night was absolutely FANTASTIC!! So unexpectedly and pleasantly surprised was I!! There portions are large and so very filling that you can keep the number of items to a minimum. We went ahead to order the jalapeño naan, fresh opah in creamed spinach, plain naan, tikka chicken and beau ordered some grilled seasoned chicken dish that was smoking when it arrived. Between the four of us, we had leftovers for the next day. The fish was fresh, the chicken was moist and seasoned to perfection, the naan... OH the naan!! Such soft pillows of heaven!! We opted to share everything and we even ordered a type of 'cheesecake' that was very interestingly pleasant. Don't ask me for names, yet-- still learning how to spell and pronounce them!! Just say 'that chicken thing with tomatoe' or 'that opah fish with spinach cream' or something... Whatever they bring will be delicious! More characteristic than fancy and more delicious than all my expectations -Himalayan Kitchen is a new favorite of the beau and me. Becoming regulars here is a *MUST*. Food is really tasty but I'm always a little shocked at the prices, for the amount that you get, yet I find myself returning often with friends and family. One thing that you MUST order is the Okra! My only regret is I pass by this place almost everyday and only now, I've discovered it. On another note, Anthony Bourdain once said that Yelp reviewers are the worst. I can see why. I saw a Yelp review that said the food here was excellent, but would have given more stars but the bathroom was dirty. Seriously WTF?? How precocious. I just ate here for the first time and I was super impressed at every turn. #1. all staff that I saw wore masks the whole time, over noses and everything. They also weren't constantly adjusting their masks. 10/10 for maskwearing score, my whole family really appreciated that. #2. fantastic outdoor atrium dining area - beautiful ambiance, the safest of dining-out experiences during the pandemic. They also didn't seat the tables in between, we were genuinely over 6ft away from everyone else at all times, which is super rare to find. Even the indoor areas were open-air. #3. Delicious food (but it is slow food, don't expect it in a hurry. It's worth the wait.) #4. Great service. Sarah and Noah were fantastic, knowledgeable, friendly, genuine.. Not overbearing, the perfect dining experience. #5. I was slightly disappointed that "we don't serve alcohol at this time" because one of the main reasons we chose this place was the intriguing cocktail list I found online.. BYOB though, which was easy enough to grab from 7-11 but if we had prior notice we would have thought to stop by Tamuras on the way. Not worth taking a star off for this (but they should probably update their website.. on the other hand, I'm kind of glad they didn't, we might not have tried this place and it was soooo good) #6. Absolutely wonderful waitstaff and managerial service, lovely ambiance as the restaurant is located on the second floor of the building, and lots of outdoor seating!! Great varieties of Indian and Nepalese curries on the menu and the option to pick spicy levels 1-10! I love moderate-to-semi high spicy food..and level 7 was right on the border of what was perfect for me. I'll go six next time. There is a lot of flexibility with the menus to add/substitute to allow for vegan/no dairy or vegetarian. (No beef or pork on the menu but lots of lamb, fish, and chicken! - keep those cholesterol levels low folks! ) Garlic naan was great and you HAVE to get the gelatos for dessert! A small eat out which is conveniently located about 20 mins from Waikiki. To satisfy our spicy taste buds we decided to pop in. We ordered the Samosa , papadum and momos for appetizers. Shahi Paneer and Jalapeño Gaelic bread for entree. The papadum was okay and my husband dint like the momos as much and probably had only one of the five or six served. Noticing this, the women from the front desk walked up to us and asked if we would like to box it. My husband mentioned that he dint like the taste as much and we were asked if that item can be taken off our check. Thought this was a sweet gesture. Second time around(around lunchtime), felt the service could have been better. We become a fan of the Jalapeño garlic bread and not so much of the Nepali Dal. I was very excited to try this place. It was our first time going to this restaurant. When we got there it wasn't busy, we got to sit down quickly. They have a inside and outside dining area with a gazebo for a large party. We sat on the outside dining area were you can see the stars and night sky. Which was very romantic. Everything on the menu sounded very delicious we had a hard time to decide. We wanted to order everything to try because it sounded delicious. For appetizer we got the Himalayan saag dip. Which is a fresh spinach and cream cheese mix with spices. Served with deep fried bread. It's there version of spinach artichoke dip with Indian spices. The fried bread was crisp outside but soft inside. For the main course we order lamb bhuna, goa shrimp, okra da butwa, garlic naan bread, and family order of basmati rice (I love rice). The customer service was excellent. Our server told us that our food was going to take a while because they have to cut the okra. While we were wait for our food. They have us complimentary naan chip with cilantro dip (I don't know the name it). The wait was worth it, the food was delicious. They complemented each other, nothing was over powering. Wow! Definitely a hidden gem! This was the BEST foodie experience I've had in Honolulu so far! This cozy restaurant is tucked away in an otherwise ordinary business complex and i never would have guessed the treats in store for us there by the outward appearance of the complex from the street. This is a must visit spot! Excellent service, everyone was so friendly and attentive. Perfect for a date night. The cozy outdoor balcony seating and patio spaces are classy yet hold that laid back island vibe. We found ourselves making friends with the guests in the neighboring tables so they had friendly patrons. We ordered the saag paneer and Shahi paneer which were both prepared with care for vegetarians. The paneer, Indian cheese, was the best I've had in any Desi/South Asian restaurant because they make it from scratch as well! This is extremely rare to find and felt like the wonderful fresh paneer I used to get in India. Their Garlic Naan is made from scratch in house and has a lovely robust garlic flavor, gentle crisp on the bottom and so soft to sink your teeth into. Note to vegans that the Naan has yogurt culture in it and possibly ghee (butter) on top so it's not vegan but it is vegetarian and perfect to order with the curries for dipping. I loved the music selection with relaxing Indian instrumental and pop music from the '90s - all the best AR Rahman hits! Volume level was perfect for having conversation while not over hearing too much from other tables. The flavors were so rich and hearty! Oh my god, the food and the atmosphere here is fantastic! The outdoor seating is a gorgeous little place and the food is so tasty! Would absolutely recommend. The waiters were very friendly and attentive and the food came out relatively quickly. One thing I would say though is that if you loooove spicy food like me then don't be afraid to tell them that. I asked for my dish to be extra spicy and the waiter scared me into asking for an 8/10 spice level rather than the 10/10 spice. Once I got my dish I was a bit disappointed because it wasn't spicy to me at all! It was still really good and flavorful, so I didn't send it back, but just note that I believe they kind of over-talk their spice levels. If anyone has high blood pressure or high sodium, do not eat here. I read past reviews on this restaurant and several people mentioned that the food was "extra salty". I decided to try it anyway and thought that the food wouldn't be as salty as several people mentioned. I can now vouch for all those people and agree that the food (specifically" the curries are SALTY. Not sure if the owner or chef reads the reviews but they need to tone down on the salt. Minus the saltiness, the food was great. But I will not dine here again until I hear or see that they bring the saltiness down. After leaving the restaurant I felt fatigued and my toes and fingers were going a bit numb from all the sodium. I don't ever get like that with other Indian-style restaurants or other restaurants with cuisines that are on the saltier side. Absolutely incredible flavors, I can't wait to return! These curries are so packed with spices, it's like nothing I've had before. My table tried a variety of curries, including the garlic, coconut and tomato varieties. Everything was outstanding. We also went for multiple naans, the best of which was the cheese stuffed one! (But also the jalapeño, cilantro Garlic one...) You absolutely must get the spiked mango lassi with your food, it's the perfect sweet and creamy counter to the spicy curry. 10/10! read more

My partner and I ordered two curry dishes thru Uber eats and unfortunately, neither came with rice. No where on the menu did it say the meals were ala carte and for $14.95 for a (small) bowl of curry, we figured it would come with rice. It did not and we were both disappointed. We also ordered the garlic naan for $3.95, which was 1 large piece of naan that was too salty, had way too much garlic chunks and was about 85% burnt black on the bottom and sides. CREDIT CARD CUSTOMERS BEWARE! I ate here around October 14th and we had BRYAN as a waiter. He was incompetent but apparently felt that he did a stellar job, because he helped himself to a tip on my credit card. The total bill was $62.04. I didn't think BRYAN deserved a tip since it took nearly 2 hours for curry and the service was terrible (we had to ask for more water multiple times). Apparently he disagreed, because when my statement came the total charged to my card was $72.04. Seems that BRYAN took it upon himself to add an extra $10 tip. I took a picture of the signed check (as I always do), so I had proof that BRYAN added his own tip. I made several attempts to contact the management regarding this, even stopping by one afternoon and dropping off a copy of the receipt alongside a copy of my credit card statement as proof) to the prep cook, asking him to have the owner or manager get in touch with me. The NEXT WEEK the owner called me apologizing, and assuring me that he would take care of this. That was 10 days ago. It doesn't seem that they are true to their word. I tried every avenue possible to resolve this issue directly with the owner/manager, but it seems that they aren't very concerned that their waitstaff is adding tips onto the bills of their customers. read more

This one property in Kaimuki has so many great dining options! The Himalayan Kitchen is the most recent one we've tried, and we weren't disappointed. The only complaint I have is that it seemed like all the food was Indian. I was hoping to try something new. But we were thrilled with the dishes we got (the Himali platter, butter chicken and a delicious lamb biriyani, plus a garlic naan and an onion kulcha), and the service was fantastic. I do want to start off by saying that food will always TASTE better dining in than take-out, I know this. My friend and I had ordered take-out via bite squad. (We already voiced our issues with them) We ordered a few cu. 2 out of the 3 were fine. The one that was a mistake was the CHICKEN saag, it was instead TOFU saag that was given to us. we have always enjoyed eating here. but this review is more about the great service rather than the always tasty food. my aging mom has started to go down the path of dementia. although she goes out every day for lunch, she recently changed some meds and has become a bit erratic while her body gets used to it. my mom complained about the naan bread and was a bit unreasonably angry that it was charred (which is actually good, really). at first the owner tried to relate to my mom, not realizing her mental condition. but as we explained she has dementia, he did his best to assuage her, even bringing a replacement bread. eventually, we were able to calm things by giving her an emergency med for this high anxiety moments. but we're grateful for the himalayan kitchen for being reasonable and trying their best. read more

Being said, be prepared to lower your expectation as you are entering into a third world country with low expectation of hygiene, sanitation and service. As our neighborhood place to grab pretty good indian/nepalese food, it's our go to in that way. But wondering if the lack of competition in this space is one of the main things keepin it going. Or maybe it's the hefty price tag for what amounts to a pint of sauce+meat when you're ordering a dish. Because the service, c'mon, leaves a whole trunkload to be desired. The kitchen rarely seems to have it together as far as timing, and I know how that can make the front of the house seem poorly run. Even something as simple as ordering take out can take forever. That said, I do enjoy the taste of the food, when you get it. And if it's what you ordered. Wish it weren't so spendy, but it is what it is. My favorite spot for Indian/Himalayan/Nepalese cuisine. Himalayan and garlic naan yum yum yum!!!! Naan just makes your day better. There are a few regular dishes we get that I can't remember (fortunately my friends remember them), but my two favorites that come to mind are the chicken vindaloo and the lamb sekuwa. The Mixed Tandori grill is good, but a little dry compared to the other dishes. Great value and the huge benefit of being a byob establishment. Check it out! read more

The food was amazing. Yes that is how I started. When we arrived there were a few tables seated and they all were eating and everything I saw on the tables looked good. I sat on the lanai by the street there was a pleasant breeze. Our order was taken by the young man working as the host. But our water never was empty and the lovely lady was so sweet. The 1st course came very quick once was ordered. The one thing that was wrong was the other dinners! They were rude and mean to the employees. Not all of them but at least three tables I would have liked to throw them out of the restaurant. I want to thank the staff for their wonderful service I hope the the horrible people at least tipped you well!
