As waves come rolling in... Ai am humbled within the mist of brilliant minds
    Vittorio G.

I was invited by a member of the Hilo Rotary Club to support a fundraiser and the event was being held at the Hilo Yacht Club. It was a prestigious honor to be invited, honestly, I felt overwhelmed and unsuitable to attend. This was also my first experience at the Hilo Yacht Club and the setting was spectacular, pristine, and elegantly timeless. I had to take a few moments and savor the beauty of the land with the echoing sounds of waves cascading against the shore. The fundraiser event offered "Ono Pupus" from the Hilo Yacht Club's superb culinary team and each appetizer was prepared to perfection. I did my best to stay focused on the event and not get distracted by the ambiance, the service, and the exquisite pupus. Nonetheless, the Hilo Yacht Club is nested alongside the coast in an environment where either direction you look, all you see is nature's majesty. If you are there at the right time of the year, you'll see whales breaching as if they were, "ships passing along the night..." After experiencing the ecosphere of the land, I believe the lack of sailboats and yachts is beneficial to the sanctity of the biosphere. So much was I in awe of such subtle beauty, that words began to dance in the wind as misty raindrops drizzled upon my aura. What most would see as a monotonous moment, I was poetically inspired.

Daily Special: Unagi over Mushroom Risotto

Fantastic lunch with beautiful ocean views! Started off with kalo fries which were crisp yet moist, and paired with bbq sauce and horseradish mayo. I had the poke topped with avocado which was delicious and left me wanting more. My wife had a fantastic special of the day, which was unagi over mushroom risotto. The eel was braised nicely with sauce, and the risotto was perfect with wonderful mushroom flavor. My dad always gets the Caesar salad which he says is always a winner. And the view is amazing, you can't get any closer to the ocean than this!

I've been looking forward to dinner at the Hilo Yacht Club and they didn't disappoint! The sweeping sunset Hilo Bay views from our table was amazing and the appetizers were even more so. I'd highly recommend making it a regular dining experience, specially if you like the intimate no rush felling. It was a Korean BBQ Steak dinner night and we mentioned that we would prefer a simple steak with no seasoning sauce and ideally with greens plus bake sweet potatoes would be even better... so they said let's check with the chef. Next thing we know, we got just what we asked for and it was delicious. Much appreciation to the entire team who made sure the experience was of the upmost pleasant ones for those of us that have dietary restrictions.

The food was on point and the service is always friendly. Myla the bartendress is such a pleasure to see and chat with. Nice young local woman who enjoys her job and is such a good ambassador for the Club.

"What's a pirate's favorite letter? You may think it's the RRRR, but it's the C that they're in love with! Aye." The Yacht Club: a place for the upper crust; the best of the best; the creme of the crop. Or, a place for people who don't mind paying a ridiculous monthly membership fee for access to restaurant, a pool, and a few other facilities. Not something that I myself would pay for, but luckily I don't need to! Always happy to escort my grandma to lunch or dinner, I've been able to eat here a good number of times in my life and feel that I can provide an accurate representation of their foods and services. The menu at the Yacht Club's restaurant is not one that goes on for pages and pages. It is a simple one with a few quality dishes to choose from, which do change. Although I have been ridiculed for it, I have been known to just order their cheeseburger, even for dinner, despite a nice assortment of high quality dishes that are actually on the menu. But, you know what? No regerts. I mean, can I live? They make a pretty dang good burger, and a side of fries is never something to complain about. Every so often, however, I do decide to class it up and order something that is on the menu. And when doing that, I almost always get the tenderloin with gorgonzola butter sauce. It's so tender and the sauce just makes it go down so much easier. Like, I cannot tell you how great this sauce is. Of course, that may just be my inner dairy lover. Speaking of dairy, their dessert menu is none too shabby either. It sports a nice wide array of sweet delights, and they don't skimp on the dairy, let me tell you. That lactose is much too much for a few Lactaids or lactose enzyme pills. So, if you do have very particular stomach in that way, be sure to come prepared. Regardless though, everything there is delicious, and you can't go wrong. If you get a chance to dine there, I can almost guarantee you that there will be something to peak your fancy.

The Hilo Yacht Club is a private club established in 1920. It offers lunch and dinner in the main dining room from which you can see the Pacific beyond their ocean lanai. They also have a bar and recreational facilities that include tennis courts. I was fortunate enough to have been brought here by a Yacht Club member back in September of 2009. It was my first time on the Big Island, so as part of my tour, I was made a guest on two occasions. On both, we enjoyed lunch, first in the main dining room, then later by the snack bar window. It was my first visit to a private club and I was a little nervous about the exclusivity at first, but it turned out to be a very relaxing experience. The food was pretty good, and drinks were mostly standard, but for me, it was all about the atmosphere and the view. It's generally quiet, the breeze from the ocean felt really nice, and the sound of the waves really enhanced the mood. Seems like everything about the Big Island was slow-paced and relaxing, but nowhere else did I find such an easy place to unwind. The Hilo Yacht Club is everything ocean-view hotel resorts can only aspire to be minus the actual lodging. There's a bar, a pool, a gym, and all these other amenities, but no waiting in long lines, bumping into crowds of tourists, and best of all, no noise. It's a modestly sized facility found just beyond what seems like a road through a jungle, but it's a great place to get away for a breakfast or afternoon recreation. I'm not aware of the membership details as membership is by invitation only, but they do appear to have a reciprocal relationship with other clubs elsewhere. So even if you may not frequent Hilo much, membership could still be worth it through a different club. I wish I could say the membership fee is worth it, but for obvious reasons, this review is only for the face-value. Given the opportunity, I'd love to come visit again.

    Fish Tacos with Fries

I had the pleasure of dining in with my coworkers in celebration of administratives/secretaries day. My boss is a member here and invited us for a special lunch here with such a remarkable and breathtaking scenic view of the ocean. Definitely a must-try if you are invited by a member. I loved the food here and my boss always comes here for work lunches or just to enjoy company with family and friends. The staff were really nice and just overall good service. They are able to cater to small and big groups. Family friendly for sure! I know that sometimes they do themed dining and change up their menu, so you best believe you'll never get tired of their food! I had the fish tacos with fries and ended with a carrot cake for dessert. So onolicious and can't wait for another wonderful dining experience in the future! Besides the food, the table decor was so cute with their little floral arrangement. Btw, don't forget to dress appropriately! I believe they don't let you dine-in otherwise. Just a forewarning!

I walked to the meals from my cottage, and up to the pool almost daily. It was a beautiful and peaceful walk. I was concerned at first but my body quickly adapted. The meals were amazing. I had never experienced such a healthy and delicious cuisine. Most of it was locally-sourced and organic. They had lots of vegetarian options as well as vegan. That's not to say they didn't have wonderful desserts every night with dinner. I participated in several yoga classes. They have all kinds; fast, slow, Vinyasa, Yin, you name it. But they also have cultural classes on Lei making, hula dancing, salsa dancing, permaculture hikes and more. I was not bored for even a moment. If anything I needed to take a nap a couple times during the day for having been so active and busy. The people were friendly and helpful with lots of information about the locals and the community of Pahoa. They took us to Uncles market a local market/party every Wednesday night. If you have the option to do so I would also highly recommend staying at kailani for the Open Mic at least once it's fabulous. The pool is lovely but be fore-warned its clothing optional and there's a lot of nudity. There are lounge chairs to sit in and there's even a sauna area and changing rooms. I enjoyed two massage sessions while I was there. One was an apprentice massage which was just fine and very relaxing, the other was a Lumi Lumi Hawaiian massage which was amazing and different and just... quiet an experience. I would recommend it to anyone. I hope to return next summer on a sabbatical which is 30 days of participating in the community and it includes all of my lodging and meals and some massage work as well. It was hard to leave.

I was told by the concierge ahead of time that I didn't need to worry about booking tennis until the day before so to just wait until we got to the resort. It turns out the drills book up fast and way ahead of time so when I called on arrival day I ended up being #9 or 10 on the waitlist. Eek! Fortunately, the waitlist moves since people get busy with other things to do in the Big Island so I did get in to 2 classes. Joseph and Dan (i think) taught both drills. We started the drills with a warm up and then did a bunch of mini games. I'd say most players were at the intermediate level and they did a good job of pairing us up so that the levels were well matched. An hour of drills flew by, especially when looking at that view! My daughter also took one of the kids drills, which she enjoyed. The ages ranged from about 10-15 so at 14 she was one of the older kids, but all of them hit pretty well. The instructor did a great job of keeping them engaged with games and the hour seemed to move pretty fast for them too. Two other days I reserved courts (that you do the day before- i recommend calling in the morning since they fill fast)) and hit with my kids, which was a lot of fun. It can get pretty windy out by the ocean and a little hot too, but they drop off water while you're playing to keep you hydrated. We left our racquets back at home (less to pack), but we just rented racquets which was also a good way to try out some new ones. I have my eye on a Yonex after playing pretty well with it one day! The pickleball courts were even more full than the tennis courts. I stuck with tennis this trip, but would love to do both next time!

Funny I live near a small town called Seaside and grew up playing at one of the tennis clubs, in regards to ambiance nothing compares to this fabulous resort tennis club. Here to celebrate a close family friend's wedding we decided to play a little mixed doubles and sweat out some of last night's libations. It was hard for me to focus as I heard the waves lightly crashing ashore and the view of the palm trees didn't help as I raised my face into the sun to hit a serve. This club is run by a friendly staff as they remembered that family that I arrived with, they are as regular as visitors to hit island get and the pro shop is neatly laid out and it was hard for me not to buy one of those bright signature orange Mauna Kea Beach Hotel logo-ed hats or shirts. Lucky for me, the color orange and I do not get along... well at least not Tony the Tiger orange. If you enjoy the game of tennis and you want to hit a few while visiting the Kohala coast, I recommend hitting up the Seaside Tennis Club. If not for tennis, just check out the club grounds to see how magical and refreshing it would be to play here. Open 8:00am-5:00pm Daily
