Hilo Yacht Club is located on the edge of Hilo Bay about 3 miles from the Hilo International Airport. This visit brought us family style appetizers. The kalbi was well prepared (taste a bit too sweet for me but good nonetheless 3.5 stars), the calamari was fresh and deep fried (5 stars) with a decent tasting dredge pre-fry. The poke was okay (3.5 stars) and I say this because fresh fish is plentiful in Hilo. Knowing this I guess I expected a bit more from the standpoint of quality of fish. But, will I go back? Yup if I'm invited as the ambiance is relaxing and decent. Our server Justin was a great guy and made me laugh the entire time I was there! But if you've not gone there, be sure to use your global positioning service because the location is off the beaten path!

Great hours, and the staffs are friendly. Not too crowded and although I remembered it always being freezing cold, the temps were actually not too bad. Has a swim area for children and a deeper area, though warning that it is pretty deep. There's a designated lap area with lanes as well. Really love this pool and happy I got a chance to come back and swim here again!

We found out about this oceanside swimming pool (250 feet long)from the Big Island Revealed app…read more It's five feet deep in some spots. Bring your water shoes and snorkel gear! It's 2.7 miles north of the corner from Highway 132 and 137 (so, go North on Government Beach Road). This is a paved road. Around 2.7 miles, you'll come across a small hill, on the downside of the hill, you'll see a dirt road on your right through a hau bush (twisted looking trees that are entwined). If you hit Pakaka Road, you went too far. There is no parking lot. There is a small one-spot parking space that you can back into (perpendicular to the road). There are two roadside beams indicating this spot. You can also park along the road. From Government Beach Road, on the dirt road, it's 1500 feet to the shoreline. The pool is 100 yards to the left once you hit the shoreline. I do not recommend driving down the path to the shoreline because the branches are low and it's super muddy. It's an easy walk. Towards the shoreline, you'll see an abandoned turquoise minivan. It's obvious that someone was squatting in the van at some point. The engine has been torn out, windows broken, carry-out boxes everywhere, and the rainforest has started to entwine itself with the car. On the coast, there were more signs of squatters. The pool was beautiful. We went during high tide and the pools were super full and the waves were crashing hard against the rocks. The app said we should go during low tide...whoops. We didn't run into a single person. It was super secluded and beautiful. Although the walk was really neat through the hau bush and having an oceanside swimming pool to ourselves was cool...I would not do this again. Honestly, I didn't feel safe. We didn't see any squatters but the signs made me uneasy. There is no cellphone signal and your completely isolated. I recommend this for large groups of people only.

I walked to the meals from my cottage, and up to the pool almost daily. It was a beautiful and peaceful walk. I was concerned at first but my body quickly adapted. The meals were amazing. I had never experienced such a healthy and delicious cuisine. Most of it was locally-sourced and organic. They had lots of vegetarian options as well as vegan. That's not to say they didn't have wonderful desserts every night with dinner. I participated in several yoga classes. They have all kinds; fast, slow, Vinyasa, Yin, you name it. But they also have cultural classes on Lei making, hula dancing, salsa dancing, permaculture hikes and more. I was not bored for even a moment. If anything I needed to take a nap a couple times during the day for having been so active and busy. The people were friendly and helpful with lots of information about the locals and the community of Pahoa. They took us to Uncles market a local market/party every Wednesday night. If you have the option to do so I would also highly recommend staying at kailani for the Open Mic at least once it's fabulous. The pool is lovely but be fore-warned its clothing optional and there's a lot of nudity. There are lounge chairs to sit in and there's even a sauna area and changing rooms. I enjoyed two massage sessions while I was there. One was an apprentice massage which was just fine and very relaxing, the other was a Lumi Lumi Hawaiian massage which was amazing and different and just... quiet an experience. I would recommend it to anyone. I hope to return next summer on a sabbatical which is 30 days of participating in the community and it includes all of my lodging and meals and some massage work as well. It was hard to leave.

There's a great big community meeting room, and the kitchen, as well as smaller meeting rooms all on the upper floor. Downstairs are various services including the department of motor vehicles upcountry office. What a great place to have a party for a wedding or graduation and invite everybody you know. There are beautiful views of the ocean and central valley, including Molokai and the west Maui Mountains. Step out on the covered lanai to get some fresh air and enjoy the views. The vast central space has an open beam ceiling making for great acoustics. This is a real highlight of the community in Pukalani.

Blink and you'll miss it - there are no signs or markers and barely any parking in the area, which only adds to the local appeal. Tourists have no idea it's here and drive right past because the main attraction (the waterfall and diving rocks) are tucked out of view from the road above. To find it, look for the small gap in the guard rail where you hike a short ways down a path to the pool. At the end of the path you'll be treated to several large rocks that are good for laying out towels and lounging about. It's also a great spot to watch the brave ones dive off the rocks near the waterfall. The water here is super clean and refreshing. It's the absolute best place to cool off while avoiding the crowds.

Parking along the road fills up quick and is rare to get the open waters without running into human feet and bodies as you are snorkel around. Added bonus the public restrooms.
