We had an amazing hike with beautiful scenery on the way to the waterfall. The trail is well worth it--easy to follow, well marked, and filled with gorgeous flowers and lush foliage along the way.

Great little hike on the big island that is well worth a visit! Towards the Hilo side of the Island - they have a small parking lot for a small free or overflow roadside parking and it's a low cost to enter the park which has well maintained trails and is an easy walk accessible to most - I am recovering from a broken foot and found this no issue at all The park is lush and green and the circle in and out takes you to a stunning 442 ft waterfall! Another waterfall - Kahūnā Falls- is also visible from this trail! A great spot to enjoy a short walk with stunning views in the Big Island !

Nice, lush gardens on this ~ 30 minute paved path with Akaka falls halfway through. The vegetation near the falls viewpoint obscures your ability to get a complete photo of the falls and pool below. Go in the morning for the best photo as the afternoon sun is behind the falls making it challenging to get the right exposure. The parking and entrance fee is a bit high for this short trail, thus I give this 4 stars instead of 5.

This was the most memorable waterfall we have encountered in Hilo. Although, we had to pay $10 for parking and $5 each person. Thought it was a bit much, but once you step into the lush rainforest totally forgot all about the price tag. It's a round paved looped trail, so you can't get lost. If you are a nature lover, this is the place to be. So intrigued with exotic flowers, plants, trees, streams, and of course the immaculate waterfall you paid to see. Highly advised to visit early in the morning as it can get busy throughout the day. Take plenty of pictures because you won't see this everyday on the mainland.

Akaka Falls is a stunning 442-foot waterfall, twice the height of Niagara Falls. I've seen other reviewers' complaints about parking and fees, but this stop was one of many on a day tour that I was on when I visited the Big Island so I cannot comment about those things. All I know is that there is a lovely .4 mile trek on a paved footpath through a beautiful rainforest to enjoy before you even get to the falls. Once you get to Akaka, savor the views, but it's a popular spot, so expect to share it with lots of other waterfall lovers.

$5 per head and don't park in lot or you'll pay $10 more. Park on the street and walk in. This is worth it. Walk through the lush rainforest jungle and see these incredible falls. Not to be missed!!

Another nature lovers paradise! Beautiful trees, flowers and wildlife all right here in this rainforest that had no rain that day. Made it even more perfect as one stayed dried.

A small hike to see one of the popular waterfalls on the big island. So beautiful! Feels like you're walking in a rainforest- but on a safe pathway. Read the fun facts about the falls- very interesting! I won't spoil it.

What a money grab! I think reviews and travel guides need to point out how much it will cost to visit. $10 per car to park and $5 per person for entry = $22 ($20 with tax) for two people. There were 2 employees to use the machine and process payment for you in case you're not doing it right (they didn't let anyone do it themselves). Yes, there are a few street parking spots outside the parking lot but there is a deep trench and we were worried our car would get stuck. If you park outside you would only need to pay the $5/person. The only covered pavilion/canopy with shade was also roped off and said "employees only" - with bags and personal items of these two employees occupying the whole table. Just seems like it was built to be a park amenity and not a private break room for these employees, whose only job is to help people use a machine they can use themselves... This "trail" was a super short paved path to a viewpoint. The employee at the top said "15 min walk" to get there (maybe so it would sound less like a scam) but it was more like 5 mins to Akaka falls, and maybe another 5 mins to the lower falls and back. The falls and surrounding plants were beautiful, but the price is absolutely ridiculous. The value should be more along the lines of free (LOL) or maybe $5/car to park and no entrance fee, in my opinion. It costs more to visit than a national park with tons and tons of trails, sights, amenities, and conservation! Insane.

Wow! This place is beautiful and highly recommended - especially if this is your first time visiting Hilo. The great thing is that locals are free. It was a nice hike since everything was paved, but be advised that there are a lot of stairs. Overall, the whole loop took about 30 minutes, which is a very nice and easy stroll and because there's so much beautiful foliage and greenery it went by really quick!

    Darren L.

Beautiful scenic walk. There are two waterfalls on the trail. The lower falls wasn't visible due to the vegetation growth. However, Akaka was flowing, but very low in volume. Still beautiful. If you are on the Big Island, it's a must see.

This is a hiking trail leading to a beautiful water fall. The price of admission is $5 per person and $10 for parking. No appointments or reservations are required, simply show up and get in line to pay admission at the kiosk. The weather was perfect for a hike, not too hot and not an overcast day. The pathway was absolutely beautiful, peaceful, and breathtaking. Due to the climate, the entire area was filled with rich and green foilage. Such a popular nature walk. Walk along at your own pace. Some areas were a little "tough" as there was an inclined to reach the next point. I was happy to make the trek and reach the lovely waterfall. I recommend a little practice of mini hikes a month before making the trip, it will be much easier on your legs!! Come with plenty of time and enjoy the sights, plants, trees, stream, and rock formations. Don't forget to tell'em that Rosemary sent ya!

    Beautiful plants and trees!

Such a beautiful park! The waterfall is absolutely amazing! There are lot of stairs so make sure your prepared for that. But it is a cement walkway so you don't even need hiking shoes. The walkway does a loop so walk around the whole thing and enjoy the beauty! They do charge now, $5 per adult and $10 for parking. If you happen to go after 5 like we did, the gate is closed so you park on the street, but you can still go in the park for free!

Ask the Community - Akaka Falls State Park

Does non-Hawaiian residents need to pay per person ($5) AND a parking fee ($20)?

Has akaka falls state park opened back up yet? Website says no, but not sure if it has been updated. Anyone been lately? Thanks 😊

It sure is open, however, the bathrooms are not. They do have portable ones for the time being.

At $35 for adults, $25 for kids aged 6-12, and free for kids 5 and under-- it's money well spent. Some might call this place pricey but after coming here, I disagree. Places like this are so rare and unique that they can just take my money. I've never been to a garden so full of exotic plants, flowers that I'd never seen before, mini waterfalls, a pond, and to top it all off-- getting to see the ocean waves crashing onto the lava rocks at the end of the garden. Prior to this I had never seen orchids growing in the wild off of tree trunks. These guys were everywhere here. And how do I know this place is cool even for Gen Z?-- I caught my 20 year old nephew taking videos of a beautiful flower that he was admiring. Of course I didn't make a huge deal out of it because he would have blown me off. Once you walk the paths and over the bridges, you can see how meticulously this garden is maintained. When you find out the history of how Mr. Dan Lutkenhouse Sr. and his wife Pauline who bought this parcel of land back in 1977 and decided to turn it into a garden, you'll be even more amazed. There was no machinery used to turn this place into the garden it is today. It was 40 years of Dan and his assistant Terry Takiue who worked with *just* cane knives, sickles, picks, shovels and a chainsaw to clear paths through the jungle. Another fun fact: He had no formal training in botanical gardening... Insert mind blown emoji here... Can you imagine that?? I can only respect that these guys did this just so that we could enjoy this garden paradise for us and future generations to see. Bravo to this place coming from our fam that came and loved it.

This happened to be the closest picnic area that we could come to, thanks to a little tik- tok video she watched. If you're looking for a traditional beach with sand, this isn't the place. But what you'll get instead are the famous black lava rock formations Kona is known for that spill into several lagoons full of crystal clear water. As for eating, there are plenty of places to lay down a blanket in the grass, picnic and relax. The park has several trash cans for you to use as well and I did happily notice that the park was clean. I did not have to use the bathroom here so I can't comment on that. What impressed me the most was that they had built in stairs for you to walk into the ocean. In my entire life of traveling, I've never seen a beach park with built in stairwells to walk into the lagoons. This was a treat for me. If I have one big tip, it's to remember to have your water shoes because the rocks are sharp to walk on and can easily cut you if you're not careful. I also did read that they do have outdoor showers but I didn't see them when we were here. Lots of folks brought their own snorkeling gear because there were a lot of fish, not to mention at least 3 turtles that I saw swimming around. As I'm writing this review, I'm already missing Kona and the uniqueness of this island. If you plan on going to Kona, you must come and enjoy this place. It's truly special and I would recommend it to anyone.

We missed it the very first time, the hubby took me to the wrong beach & had to re-route. I remember it is hard to find via GPS if you miss the turn. We found parking after the beach and walked down. When I walked to Carlsmith Beach to finally check it out for the very first time, my heart just melted and just had that Wow, grateful, OMG moments and also feels like DeJaVu. I also asked my husband to pinch me, that I am not dreaming. It was so nice to just experience this live in real life, such tranquil atmosphere, crystal clear waters. I just love the color of the water, the ocean, so beautiful! Carlsmith Beach Park in Hilo is a hidden gem for sure! After we took our tons of photos, enjoyed the scenery which I really wanted to stay longer but we had a busy day ahead. For next time I visit, I would love to picnic & enjoy lunch under the coconut, palm trees and go swimming. Although I didn't sea turtles during my visits, hopefully next time.

Be careful not to block off the parking lot. There are houses behind that lot and people do go in and out. I live in the area, know some of the residents and would like to clear up any misguided information…read moreabout this property, it's access & the beach. First things first...and I really can't stress this enough. -NO PARKING OR DRIVING DOWN MILL ROAD... here's why. The ENTIRE paved road from Pinky's property on Mill, all the way to the end is a PRIVATE ROAD/DRIVEWAY and meant for the property owners to gain access to their house on the Mill. They paved Mill Road for easier access for themselves, Mill Road residents, resident guests, deliveries and utilities ONLY. It is not state maintained and it is not a public road, repeat; NOT A PUBLIC ROAD. There are signs at the top of the hill stating it's a private road. There are ZERO turnaround areas at the end of that road. It is apparent with all the chains and signs around, the residents do not want their driveways used as a turn around or parking of any kind on their property. SO, unless you want to make a 20 point turn and chance scrapping against big lava boulders, don't even bother driving down. Parking is across the highway, walk down from there. Pedestrian crosswalk provided. You can not be a lazy person to get to this beach, it's a nice long walk from the parking area. And even longer on the way back because it's all up hill. This beach has had quite the history and there are a few locals that are unhappy about this situation. But it is what it is... Most residents of Mill Road that I've spoken to are happier with the current set up of the beach access and feel the area is much safer since private ownership at the Mill. That said, this beach is NOT "public access" nor a "public beach". It was never public. It is called "permitted access". That land is completely privately owned. It's always been privately owned and wasn't accessed "publicly" until the Mill closed and was no longer being maintained. There was no safe access to that beach, it was illegally trespassed upon by entering through the old mill, luring down to the beach by ropes and chains and sketchy pathways. The new property owners made the current access to the beach and it's now a beautiful path down to the beach. Moving on and moving forward... The hours you are allowed access are from 6:30am to 6:30pm. The property owners run a tight ship but as long as you follow the rules, you're all good. It's a great place to body board and surf but only if you have skills. I've seen ppl fishing too. This area is a fresh water feeder to the ocean. The beach itself is black iki pebbles, cobbles and boulders with green sand. It's littered with debris from the old mill such as rusted metal and bricks and choke amounts of deposited drift wood. I would consider this beach kinda dangerous with all the rusted exposed Mill remnants and debris, so not really sure it's suitable for the little ones. Definitely watch your feet when walking around, lots of glass and metal. The Mill itself is completely off limits and super dangerous. It's condemned for good reason and looks on the verge of collapse. No dogs(they have guard dogs and the beach is dangerous for their feet), No wheels of any kind, No alcohol, No fires, No fruit picking. Absolutely NO PARKING on Mill road...EVER...you will be towed. I love it there but I'm also really close by and can walk down. I go often but hear lots of fake news about this place. Trying to get the truth out so everyone is on the same page and has a good time instead of a bad one. Take out what you take in and don't be asshat, walk down from the highway.
