This Beach park happened by accident when my niece was looking for a place for us to eat lunch in Kona. This happened to be the closest picnic area that we could come to, thanks to a little tik- tok video she watched. If you're looking for a traditional beach with sand, this isn't the place. But what you'll get instead are the famous black lava rock formations Kona is known for that spill into several lagoons full of crystal clear water. As for eating, there are plenty of places to lay down a blanket in the grass, picnic and relax. The park has several trash cans for you to use as well and I did happily notice that the park was clean. I did not have to use the bathroom here so I can't comment on that. What impressed me the most was that they had built in stairs for you to walk into the ocean. In my entire life of traveling, I've never seen a beach park with built in stairwells to walk into the lagoons. This was a treat for me. If I have one big tip, it's to remember to have your water shoes because the rocks are sharp to walk on and can easily cut you if you're not careful. I also did read that they do have outdoor showers but I didn't see them when we were here. Lots of folks brought their own snorkeling gear because there were a lot of fish, not to mention at least 3 turtles that I saw swimming around. As I'm writing this review, I'm already missing Kona and the uniqueness of this island. If you plan on going to Kona, you must come and enjoy this place. It's truly special and I would recommend it to anyone. read more

After coming across social media post, Carlsmith Beach Park was a must visit for me! I added it to the list of places for my uber driver/hubby to take me. We missed it the very first time, the hubby took me to the wrong beach & had to re-route. I remember it is hard to find via GPS if you miss the turn. We found parking after the beach and walked down. When I walked to Carlsmith Beach to finally check it out for the very first time, my heart just melted and just had that Wow, grateful, OMG moments and also feels like DeJaVu. I also asked my husband to pinch me, that I am not dreaming. It was so nice to just experience this live in real life, such tranquil atmosphere, crystal clear waters. I just love the color of the water, the ocean, so beautiful! Carlsmith Beach Park in Hilo is a hidden gem for sure! After we took our tons of photos, enjoyed the scenery which I really wanted to stay longer but we had a busy day ahead. For next time I visit, I would love to picnic & enjoy lunch under the coconut, palm trees and go swimming. Although I didn't sea turtles during my visits, hopefully next time. read more

Beautiful beach! Such a great place to spend the day. There was enough parking and many tide pools to swim about in. There was sand too which was nice to swim in (not sit on). The water in the tide pools was cold. I was able to watch my little girls play in the sand all day long. There is a shower area and bathrooms. With it being right outside of Hilo town you can drive right up the road and get some food. We were lucky to see some turtles in the water too! What a magical place! read more

What a beautiful beach area one of the best that I've been to. There's plenty of parking upon entering. There are plenty of spots that you can set your belongings down and jump into the water area, as it is very safe. During certain times of the year you'll see turtle swimming around so be careful as you're not supposed to touch them or interact with them, but they do get very close to you. Some spots can be rocky so make sure you wear your reef, walkers or snorkeling gear, and flippers. The water can get choppy later on in the day so keep an eye out for that otherwise it's a very beautiful spot. Perfect to spend the day having a nice picnic and get some snorkeling time in as well. read more

It is rare to see Carlsmith beach so empty. The clear blue water and natural tide pools make for amazing snorkeling and once in a while honu sightings. I especially love the addition of the handrails for those to safely lover into the water. The mixture of greenery, blue water and dark lava rocks makes it picturesque. Perfect way to cool off from the beating sun rays and UV rays the islands have to offer. Make sure to read and only buy sunblock that is safe for the marine life and environment for years to come. Dont feed the wild life and leave the beach as you came with no trace. This is a great example of best treasures the island has to offer. read more

Beautiful there's easy access into the water. Plenty of turtles and shallows to explore.

Parking can be a bit of a challenge but we got lucky with a parking lot right next to it ( a block or less away) and found ourselves a spot in there. Restrooms located right up at the entrance though no papers in there to dry your hands after a rinse. Grabbed ourselves a spot on the grass patch and did the sunscreen diligence. Baked ourselves bit and then took in the sip. The path to the beach is from right behind the watchtower and has some pointy stones nothing too bad though and one should be a bit carful treading down to the beach. Once you take the dip it's hard to come out as the water is pretty inviting and a visit or two from the famous turtles really make it one to remember. We were lucky to see one of them make its way bobbing in and out and going close to the rocks probably for the algae ( not sure though). We were in for about 45 minutes or so and then came back to the gas patch to dry ourselves a bit and head out to the next spot that this amazing Island has to offer. A bit of a drive from our Hilton resort though every bit worth it. read more

If I'm in the Hilo area - I'm making a trip to Carlsmith. What really makes this beach park unique is the mixture of the freshwater with the ocean water. It's so refreshing and clear -- it's unlike any other beach that I've been to before. The water is pretty shallow, making it great for families or individuals that aren't super great swimmers. The waters are also really calm, so you definitely don't have to be a strong swimmer at all. There is actually a big grassy area, making it perfect for picnics and lawn games. Last time I came by, there was a big party with different games like cornhole and large tables with potluck style food. The live coral here really attracts so much water life- from turtles to tons of fish. Last time I came by, I brought my fins and goggles and was able to see so much! Parking can get crazy, but if you come early enough you'll forsure get a spot or you might just get lucky with street parking. read more

This beach is breathtakingly beautiful, with numerous shallow natural pools perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or simply wading in. You might even be lucky enough to spot a sea turtle! We spotted one while there. Every vista from this beach is picturesque, and I wish I could stay longer. Convenient parking is readily available just down the road. read more

We had no plans for beach time in Hilo but when our innskeeper recommended we stop by Carlsmith, we decided to check it out. There is a parking lot but when it's full most people park alongside the road. It has beautiful clear waters, making this a popular spot especially with locals. However, if you're not use to having to walk and or climb over lava rocks to get into the water, you may want to bring reef shoes. I tried entering the water in different areas but ultimately only made it down via a small cove area. If you don't make it into the water, there are also areas that you can picnic while enjoying the view. read more

This a beautiful rocky sand beach. We brought water shoes which are very beneficial at certain parts of the beach. There are parts where there is soft sand and other spots where it's very sharp rocks. We spotted 2 turtles while we were there. The water is beautiful and not too cold, you acclimate quickly. read more

One of the most beautiful seashore spots in east Hawaii to swim, picnic, or just enjoy the glorious scenery and crystalline water. You can see lots of pretty tropical fish and, if you get lucky, maybe a sea turtle or two. But if you're new to the area, some words of caution: 1) What we humorously call "beaches" here have almost no sand and LOTS of volcanic rock. If you have any thought of going in the water, wear sturdy beach sandals! 2) Hardy souls can get into the water in lots of places, but easiest access is via a paved path that leads to metal stairs. It's located roughly in a straight line from the outdoor shower, although the path through the grass that gets you to it isn't straight. Note that the paved path gets submerged under as much as an inch of water at high tide. 3) At low tide, it can get shallow in unexpected places. Be alert and keep your eyes open while swimming. Also, if it's rained lately (usually the case near Hilo!), cold fresh water comes up from underground and mingles with the warm ocean water, creating an odd mix of temperatures. Do not let any of the above discourage you. This place is gorgeous and worth a visit. read more

Doesn't really look like a beach due to all the lava rock. It's a very beautiful and unique place to swim and relax. Unfortunately, my friends and I weren't prepared and only had hiking sandals so we didn't get to go into the water, it did look pretty inviting though. The water is so calm you can see the fisheses swimming in the water. I agree that it's like an ocean lagoon. It's a great starter beach for the little ones or if you don't want waves crashing in on you and you want to snorkel. Apparently, turtles come up into the lagoon but we didn't see any the day we went. It wasn't too busy here, but parking can be a hit or miss. Luckily, someone was leaving when we drove by and we were able to snag a spot. There's restrooms and outdoor showers. A few groups were barbecuing at the time. This is my favorite place I've seen during both my visits to the big island! The contrast between the crystal blue water, black lava rock, and lush greenery is breathtakingly beautiful. Just know, this isn't the typical beach with sand. You get in the water by climbing down the lava rock. It's best in my opinion to have water shoes. There is an area where they installed handrails to help people get in! But this place is just so beautiful, and a lot of calm water spots which is great for kids read more

We wanted to find a beach area while on the Hilo side of the island and reviews for this place were good. There is a parking area and if the lot is full you'll see cars being parked on the side. It gets pretty crowded-- we got there around 2ish and found a spot in the lot but tons of cars were lined on the road. Restrooms are sort of gross, no spare soap in the womens and the toilet is REALLY low to the ground with little to no light. Walked around to see all the different areas you could lay and get into the water. Found a spot on the lava rocks that was nice so we put our towels down and headed into the water. Crystal clear water and is just beautiful!! Lots of folks snorkel here and that's just what my daughter and hubs did. Getting into the water was challenging because the rocks hurt and you don't want to fall. Then you get in and it's like stepping into a tub of ice water!! Daughter and hubs saw some smaller fish while snorkeling. Overall good experience! read more

Found this place as one of the better places for newbie snorkelers to come and explore. Parking is slightly limited but able to be found. The grounds have a bathroom, out door showers to get the salt water and sand off of you. There is a pier, a hotel near by, and what looks like a boat ramp. The pier is near lava rock- which descends by steps into the ocean where you are invited by clear water begging you to go or a swim. The scenery is what did it for me- not only was the water clear, but I was able to see the beautiful snow capped volcanic tops from there. I came on Christmas eve and swam around early in the AM prior to an appt that I had. I took a picture with my fathers ashes in the snorkel mask and relished in the sun and amazed with the beauty surrounding me. I recommend this free place to anyone. read more

After a three week trip to Kauai, Kona and Hilo I would rate Carlsmith as one of the best beaches we stopped at. I love Hilo because it's more of a local town and not as touristy as Kona on the other side. Although much of Hilo Coast consists of lava cliffs and rocks, in town (near the airport) there are some really good beaches like this. Showers and bathrooms, a really nice pond, beautiful grass and hills and shade, and an excellent snorkeling area protected from surf by a reef. read more

We hadn't done our research very well and drove around for hours unsuccessfully trying to find a beach we could actually swim in near Hilo. These rocky Hawaiian beaches are no joke! We finally stumbled across Carlsmith Beach Park in a google search and were so glad we did. It was around 4 pm on a Tuesday but surprisingly many people and families. The tide was pretty low so you could get in the water and stay about waist deep. There was a gentle tide but no rough waves. The water was a bit cold but warm in some sections. Recommend bringing water shoes as parts are a bit rocky. Water was so clear that we could see all kinds of fish from above. Lovely spot! read more

Total hidden gem in Hilo for a refreshing swim and checking out turtles. The water is so blue and calm, it made for a really relaxing, albeit slightly cold, swim. There are handrails and stairs for super easy access to the water and plenty of space to spread out. The beach area has picnic tables, restrooms, and a small parking lot so it was very convenient and fun to spend a couple of hours here relaxing. read more

This is probably the best beach of the three we visited for snorkeling and swimming. The water was crystal clear and so beautiful. Coming from the parking lot, there's an area to the right that is more shallow and calmer, but if you want more waves the main area towards the left would be better. We actually visited this beach and Richardson in the hopes of finding honu/sea turtles but they only seemed to be congregating at another park but the views here were so lovely regardless. Due to a hiking injury I didn't go snorkeling but you bet next time I visit Hilo I will be testing out the water here! read more

Most amazing area on the coast within Hilo, it's clear waters are spectacular no joke! Watched the sunrise and couldn't be any happier.

Our Airbnb host told us about this and it was the highlight of my trip. So many turtles, it's free and not very crowded. I would suggest going on a weekday and early, if you can. I was swimming in the area to the right and large turtles would come over to visit. They would swim right up to us. There is no sandy beach but a large grassy area to sit on and relax. You won't miss the sand, trust me! The weather was perfect ( a few days ago) and much cooler than the other side of the island, it was a magical day! As tempting as it may be, don't touch the turtles! They are endangered, it's harmful to them, and you can get a huge fine. You are supposed to stay 10 feet away from them, but it's very hard when they are swimming right up to you and they seem very curious. I found myself having to back away. Also wear reef safe sunscreen. Our Airbnb host said the turtles are always here. This is the best place on the island in my opinion. Have fun! read more

This was definitely an interesting place. We heard there are turtles that come here, but due to some uhh scheduling errors, the only time we could check it out was at 9am on a weekday. I think the turtles come out later. This is a park with some lava rock right next to some water. There are some pool style poles and steps built right into it. The water here is extremely clear but that early in the morning it's also pretty chilly. It will take you time to get used to it. When we arrived there were a number of locals there basically swimming laps. Vry interesting to see. We ended up snorkeling for a bit and there was better sea life here than I expected. You aren't going to see very colorful coral or anything but there's some colorful fish. I'd say maybe this is a hidden gem. Not many parking spots but if you want to see some very clear water, and go for a refreshing swim or snorkel with some fish then I recommend it. read more
