Gotta love unexpected detours. Kolekole Beach was just a random stop cause we wanted a break during our drive to Hilo. We weren't too impressed as we walked up to the back side of the beach. Until we saw a small secluded waterfall cove across the river. The dealbreaker was probably the tree swing right next to it....the bf was on it at least 20 times (got myself some cool shots). On the right side, you can see a beautiful coastline. There are lots of rocks, fallen branches and coconut shells everywhere. There were people fishing, swimming, surfing and just hanging out. Just another excellent random find....we ended up staying here for over an hour, highly recommended.

Located on the Hamakua coast near Akaka Falls, this beach is hidden from the main road (although there is a sign on the highway). Kolekole means to talk story, and this is the kind of beach that people like to come to talk story. If you come on the weekends, it can get busy as locals meet up to hang out and talk story. (Funny side note: okole means butt in Hawaiian) This beach is located where the end of the river meets the ocean. This area is pretty rocky, so I would suggest staying in the stream and waterfall area. If you are a strong swimmer and are brave enough to swim where the river meets the ocean, be careful; there are a lot of rocks. One of my favorite memories is climbing the waterfall area and going behind the waterfall. It's very cool and easy to get to, but if you're wearing a bikini or shorts that are loose, hold on tight! ;) While at the beach, if you look up, you can see an old railroad bridge. There are pavillions and a large grassy area for picnics, as well as some barbeque areas. There are restrooms, as well as an outdoor shower for swimmers.

They have closed the entrance and gated it. Sign is posted that it's not safe to enter due to lead contamination. It's easy enough to walk around the gate. There's a hidden waterfall just before the overpass. It's nice to see. Max 20 minutes is enough. Or if you'd like more for a picnic.

06/11/17 sign posted at park for being closed. No public access because of found lead in soil.

This park was closed when I went to visit 06/10/11. There was a sign posted about found lead in the soil. It looks like a beautiful park from pictures.

The playground was a dream: tons of activities to choose from and only 1-2 other families. My review is mainly about the playground but the park was gorgeous, tons of space to run and play, covered picnic areas, and tons of parking. (There is a porta potty which was really the only dim spot for me.) The Kalakupua Playground is really well-taken care of by the neighborhood. Hardly any grafitti, only one tiny area is broken (but it's taped off), and it's very safe - as the entire ground is covered in cut up pieces of tires. There are swing sets on both sides of the playground - and safe toddler swing sets, too. Climbing choices galore, many slides to choose from, a great parkour for kids area, and even a tiered sitting area for parents to wait while their children roam free in the safe, fence-surrounded playground. Truly, truly a gem if you are looking for a playground for your kids. I can't believe we stumbled on it. But we all left so happy: as parents it was nice to let them roam free, my 1-year old daughter knocked out for her nap, and our 6-year old yelled as we were leaving, "Mom, that's a 5-star playground!" I totally agree.

Although it looks like a detour, it makes sense. The northern road is extremely narrow (at points only one car can pass), winding, and very slow. If you can avoid that route, definitely do. **Reservations Required You need to book online in advance. **Admission: $5 per person + $10 parking. For 2 people we paid $21.53 total. **Earliest entry is 7am. Parking is limited, so reserve an early slot if possible. They ask you to arrive about 30 minutes before your scheduled entry. **No cellphone reception once you head up the mountain. Cell service and even car radio cut out completely. Best to download maps or take screenshots beforehand. **Bring a power bank; we eventually just switched cellphones to airplane mode to save battery. In early December, mornings are a little cool, but once the sun comes up it gets really hot. Bring sunscreen, a light jacket, water, and hiking shoes. The trail is short (about 0.6 miles), but the ground is muddy and rocky, with some narrow paths brushing up against plants. If you don't like contact with tall grass, long sleeves help. It feels a bit like walking through a botanical garden. The highlight is Kuka'emoku (the "Iao Needle"), a 1,200-foot natural rock formation rising from the valley floor. We took our time, stopping often for photos and to enjoy the scenery, so the whole walk ended up taking us around 3 hours. Iao Valley State Monument 54 S High St, Wailuku, HI 96793
