Today's General Stores are mostly…read morefilled with reproductions of things from day's gone by and that's okay because they mimic living history and things not forgotten. I mean where else can you buy a yo-yo, a bicycle handle-bar bell, a game of jax or bins of penny candies that are no longer a penny. It looked like most of the customers here were window shopping with lots of "I remember those", "come see this" or "what the heck is that". This store is a great place to reminisce and it's definitely a touchy-feely store that everyone picks up everything to get a closer look so most items here are like a Petri dish, a little hand sanitizer might be something you'll want to pick up while you're here. The staff is really great and can point you in the right direction if there's a particular item you're looking for unless it's a block of salt , a sack of flour or a country ham in a cloth sack hanging from the ceiling, it's not that kind of general store the only mason jars I saw here were filled with cat-eye marbles. I enjoyed spending about 30 minutes here, it was entertaining and I did find a refrigerator magnet for the RV, I didn't see any "you break it, you buy it" signs so the margins are probably pretty good here...

We had lunch at Betty's yesterday and immediately fell in love with the sisters behind the bar…read more They were super friendly, fun, and truly made us feel welcome. Unfortunately, that's really the highlight of our visit. We were starving, so we all ordered hearty plates. My daughter ordered chicken strips with okra and corn. I had the same but swapped for mac & cheese and green beans. My husband ordered the roast beef with green beans and mac & cheese. All meals came with a cat head biscuit. The food looked great, but there was zero seasoning in anything. I honestly don't know how you mess up green beans, but somehow it happened. I barely made it through two bites of the chicken just to get something in my stomach. Then I tried the mac & cheese... OMG. I can't even describe the taste--I discreetly spit it into my napkin. Thankfully my daughter shared her okra, which was the only decent thing on my plate. Her "corn" turned out to be creamed corn, which she doesn't like. She thought she ordered regular kernel corn, so she was disappointed. She used enough ketchup to get down two chicken strips. My husband's roast beef was... interesting. It was more like a shredded roast-and-rice casserole. Not sure if that's even a thing, but that's what it resembled. He said it tasted good and ate it all, but even he couldn't touch the mac & cheese. He poured almost an entire salt shaker on his green beans just to make them edible. In the end, the best thing on the table was the cat head biscuit. Again, the staff was absolutely wonderful--truly the saving grace of this place. But as friendly as they are, the food alone isn't enough to bring us back.

WE LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!!…read more Lots of nostalgic items here, including an eating area that is a super cool replica of the country diners of old as well as vintage Coke signs, vending machines and coolers! They also have local knick-knacks and old school candies such as slap-sticks, candy dots on wax paper, and squirrel nut zippers. I really freaked out when I spotted the gum cigarettes I used to pretend smoke as kid while Jamarcus had to have those old school big red wax lips. The owner (Gladys) was a real sweetheart and welcomed us to come back anytime. We sat on the front porch eating our candy and just enjoying our day of hiking local waterfalls. Mountain Junction General Store is a cool stop on the way to Highlands, SC. We had a great time and will be stopping here more often when traveling in the area. Be sure to also get a cup of delicious boiled peanuts from next door @ Victory Garden Produce. 2017/101

Fortunately when we were out…read more looking at scenery from the Sky Valley Overlook and Mud Creek falls, some of us had to go to the restroom, and Mountain Junction was the first place we stopped. This place is a little building filled with history, from old soda machines to malt/milk shake making displays, and old school candy (um, can you say pop rocks, wax lips and cigarette gum...that blows out candy smoke when you blow on it. YES!) In addition to the nostalgia you'll no doubt get...especially if you were around in the 80s, there's actual snacks and sodas too, and the mentioned restroom in this General purpose store. There are several aisles of preservatives, groceries and such, like Apple butter, or chips, and staff here not only are nice, but happily take a minute to talk to you about everything they have on hand! Located at the intersection of Old Mud Creek Road and Dillard road, pretty much right at the GA/NC line, You can't miss Mountain Junction with the big water wheel front and center. Parking is gravel and grass, but no worries because there's a decent amount of room for space, and there's a little produce stand right next door that sells fresh veggies if you want them. I like that we stopped here, because i've passed it once before, and realized that decision was a mistake, and i'm telling you if you pass it by without at least taking a minute to walk down memory lane, you'll think it it's a mistake too.
